HODGE, Joseph - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

90 years is a long ways back, remarked Joseph Hodge of Hillsboro on his 90th birthday anniversary Tuesday April 22.  While living alone he spends much of his time reminiscing of his younger life in which he recalls the hardships of the Civil War.  His father and an older brother took part in that war.  He has lived through World War I and II and says the hardships were nothing to compare with the Civil War when it was a common occurrence to have their meal taken from their table as they were ready to eat.  Mr. Hodge was born in Glasgow, KY on April 22, 1857, the youngest of a family of 7 children.  He was married in Kentucky and he and his wife and children came to the vicinity of Hillsboro 63 years ago.  They were the parents of 7 children, 5 of whom with the mother have been called in death.  There are two sons living: Culbert T Hodges of Marengo, Ind and Thurman Hodges of Ludlow Falls, Ohio.  During his active years Mr. Hodge followed the carpenter trade.  Since the death of his wife a few years ago he has lived alone in Hillsboro and in nice weather makes his daily trips to town.  He had spaded his garden this spring and has most of his garden planted including his potatoes.  He does his own house work.  He is now Hillsboro’s oldest citizen, the death of Miles Cooper, 96, a few weeks ago.  Mr. Hodge was remembered by a number of his friends with birthday greetings and numerous gifts, including a large birthday cake from Mrs. Lyron Ford on which was inscribed 90 years of age.  He wishes to thanks his friends for their … (thanks to Bren M and typed by kbz)_
