John P. HARTMAN

Hanford, C. H. Seattle and environs, 1852-1924. Chicago : Pioneer Historical Pub. Co. 1924, p 301

John P. HARTMAN, one of Seattle's successful lawyers, has been a resident of the state for a period of 22 years. He was born near Harveysburg, IN a son of John P. Hartman who was of Anglo-French Huguenot stock, although the family is of Anglo-Saxon origin. The ancestors in the maternal line were of Quaker faith and another branch of the family came from Holland to America, settling in the state of PA. During the early boyhood of John P. Hartman his parents removed to NEB and there he attended public schools. Later he became a student at the University of Neb and after completing a course in law he qualified for the practice of his profession. He arrived at Tacoma, Wash on 11 Feb 1891, and 3 years afterward removed to Puyallup, this state where he made his home for two years. During that period he was the business associate of Ezra Meeker, the pioneer hop grower of the state and the largest buyer in Washington of Hops for European markets. They were also interested in financial affairs, controlling the First national BanKnights of Pythiasuyallup. The panic of 1893, combined with shortage in crops, obliged them to discontinue their financial operations, but all depositors were paid in full and to those who did not come to the bank to withdraw their funds the officials of the institution sent the full amount of their deposits. After his withdrawal from banking activities Mr. Hartman came to seattle and resumed the practice of law, to which he has since devoted his attention. He has a thorough understanding of the principles of jurisprudence and correctly applies his knowledge to the points at issue. At the outset of his career he learned the necessity for thorough preparation and never enters the court room without being ready to present his case in the strong, clear light of reason, based upon the fact and the law. He is a member of the firm of Hartman & Hartman with offices in the Burke building and the ability which they have displayed in the prosecution of cases has won for them a liberal clientele, connecting them with much important litigation. On 16 Sept 1883, Mr. Hartman was married to Miss Caroline E. DRYDEN, and 3 sons have been born to them: Dwight D; Harold H and Robert N. Mr. Hartman is a Presbyterian in religious faith and stanch republican in his political views, active in support of the party. He is deeply interested in the educational advancement of the state and is a regent of the University of Washington. That he is appreciative of the social amenities of life is indicated by his connection with the Union Club of Tacoma and the Golf & Country, Athletic, Firloch, Arctic and Rainier Clubs of this city. He supports all worthy public enterprises and contributes his share toward the progress of his community. He views life from a broad standpoint and has won an enviable position in a profession which is intellectually stimulating and develops a love of justice and fair play which is of great value in character building.
