CRANE - WW

WW Crane, a farmer of Fountain County went to Indianapolis this week to invoke the aid of the state authorities in suppressing the White Cap organization of his county.  He is a son of Elijah Crane who was so brutally treated by White Camps a year ago.  He believes that murder has just been added to the crimes of the gang.  A young man, giving his name as Elmer T. Vankinburg came to his house several weeks ago and pretended to be a preacher.  He held meetings in different parts of Fountain County, particularly in the vicinity of Veedersburg.  He finally told Mr. Crane that he was a detective and had been sent there to work up testimony against the “white caps.”  He preached at Browns Chapel and Saturday night the chapel was burned. Wednesday he was to have held services again but he disappeared and all trace of him was lost. The people in the neighborhood believe that the man has been murdered by some one who thinks he found out too much.  Crane’s description of the detective tallies exactly with that of Detective Galloway of Indianapolis who is known to have been trying to work up the white cap cases and from whom nothing has been heard for 10 days past.

Detective Galloway appeared on the streets yesterday weighing 140# and looking the picture of health and as serene as a basket of chips.  “You can say that I haven’t been down in Fountain County and have not been killed by the white caps, said he.  “It was a surprise to me to learn that I was dead and I am pleased to know that it was all a mistake so far as I am concerned.”  Now who WAS the detective that WW Crane of Fountain County says he suspects was killed by white caps?  Anyone lost a detective?
