We have been informed the 45th regulars started home May 20.  Sherman Brant, a member of said regiment will be gladly welcomed home by our citizens who know how to give a soldier his just dues.

Captain OP Lee who is recruiting for the 45th US infantry now forming at Fort Snelling, Minn went to Indianapolis last evening to spend Sunday at his home in that city.  He will return to Lafayette tomorrow when he will resume his work as a recruiting officer.  A number of applicants have been examined by Dr. Thompson and the following men have been accepted: Louis R. Smith, Doc Brant, Sherman Brant, BJF Moore, Frank McCann and Hugh Lafollette.  It is understood that all of the volunteers secured here will be kept in the city until the office is ordered closed and the men are ordered to report for duty at Fort Snelling.

Sherman Brant, 48 was captured on the boulevard Saturday evening and Lewis Cook, 47 was taken into custody at 4th and Main Streets Sunday evening by the police.  They faced charges of intoxication and driving while intoxicated.  On their guilty pleas Monday Judge SU Simms assessed a fine of $10 and costs amounting to $40 on each count or $80 apiece.

Sherman Brant and Josh Wilson were arraigned in the city court late yesterday afternoon charged with cruelty to animals. Both men secured the horses from Joe Pauley, the Third Street Livery man. The offenses were committed Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.  The customary fines against each were assessed.

Sherman Brant, 39 years old, 755 West Vermont Street, a driver employed by a baking company who was arrested last night by Sgt Winkler and five members of the morals squad told the police that when he went walnut hunting several days ago, he found 12 pints and 44 half pints of whisky scattered along a country road.  He gathered up the bottles, according to the police version of his story, put them in a suitcase and took them home.  The policemen searched his home and found 12 pints under the seat of his automobile and the remainder of the whisky under the bed in his home.  Brant was charged with violating the prohibition law.
