When I came on to the Erie Canal there was a group of Irishmen standing by a log fire. One of them stepped out into the trail before me ringing his fists and said - "Faith young man, wouldn't you like to take a few knocks with a young lark like I am?" I said, "No", and whipped my horse on the back and went around him on a gallop. I reached my place of destination all right to Elkhart County, Indiana. I worked for Judge LATA in the summer of 1845 right through harvest for nine dollars a month, and in the summer of 1845 right through harvest for nine dollars a month, and in the winter of 1845 and 1846 for seven dollars a month. I bought a broadcloth coat for $21.00 which cost me just three months work to a day. The Indians gave possession to the three river country in Iowa on the fifteenth day of April, 1846 and I started for that country on the first day of May." David's parents Leonard and Catherine BOWMAN lived in the Elkhard County area from the mid 1830's through about 1846 when they also went to Iowa. One of the daughters married a CASTEEL in Indiana. I would LOVE to receive any information about the family and/or leads to learn more. Thanks, George Gildersleeve in Ontario, Oregon
