As a token of gratitude, the LDS gave the Society copies of all the microfilms. They're all located at he Genealogical Society's library in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Beardsley, Elkhart. The library is only open on Thursday, from 1-6:00. Hope this helps! The Indiana State Archives wanted all county probate records on microfilm. They made an agreement with the Mormon Church to microfilm the records and give the State Archives a set of the films. Another set was to go the organization that helped with the work. The courthouse didn't have the manpower to spare for this job. The Elkhart County Genealogical Society volunteered to help. Volunteers worked 3,044.5 hours. If you figured that at $7.00 per hour that would be $21,311.50 or $70.10 per film. They worked hard for these films. When it was done they didn't know what to do with the files. They couldn't be put back in the vaults they were kept in. Dean Garber volunteered to build shelves to store them on. They are stored in large boxes and the ones on top are about 10 or 12 Ft. up. The boxes are heavy and most of the employees in the court house are women. I don't see how they do as good as they do. The people at the Court House and the Genealogical Society knew there was a problem and have been working together to solve the problem. It would take a lot on money to solve the problem right. I suggest that anyone interested in county records or sees a problem with them, that they join their local Genealogical Society and help solve or get help to solve the problem. Elkhart has their meetings the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM., in the First Presbyterian Church at 200 E. Beardsley. The Church has went out of its way to be helpful to the Society and we are very grateful for that. Ned Parcell
