MRS. BARBARA SCOLES
An old pioneer gone. - Died June 15th 1900, at 6 am at her home in Bango township, Elkhart county, Ind. of paralysis Mrs. Barbara Scoles, aged 80 years, 8 months and 12 days. She was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, near where the city of Dayton now stands Oct. 3, 1819. While she was still a little child her father, Henry Huntsinger, moved with his family to Darke county, Ohio, ten miles south of Greenville, the county seat. In 1831 he emigrated to Indiana settling on a farm in Pleasant Valley, St. Joseph county.
She was one of 14 children, eight sons and six daughter, twelve (six sons and six daughters) of which lived to raise families of their own, two sons dying in infancy. She gave her heart to God and her hand to the church in girlhood, being a faithful member of the Baptist church for many years. She was converted under the preaching of Elder James Martin. She was a faithful earnest christian, a noble wife and a patient, loving mother. She was twice married, to her first husband, John W. Drake, Feb. 11, 1841, to this union was born two children, JB Drake and Mrs. S. Berth of this city. Mr. Dark died Nov. 15th 1844; the second time to Samuel Scales on Feb. 22, 1846, to the second union was born three children, Lewis Scales who lives at the old homestead, Melissa, wife of OH Stuart and Enoch who died when 5 years old. Mrs. Stuart preceded her mother to the better land 9 years ago. Mother lived to see the fourth generation of her family. She leaves behind to mourn her loss an aged husband apparently on the verge of the grave, 3 children, 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. Susan Merriman of Kearney, Neb. And Mrs. Sarah Beers of Montrose, Col., besides many relatives and friends. Her funeral was preached at the old home Sunday, June 17, at 1:30 by Rev. AA Cober, the Baptist minister. Her remains were interred in Grace Lawn cemetery.

Mrs. Barbara Scoles died at 6:00 yesterday morning at her home six miles south of Elkhart, Death resulting from paralysis. The deceased was 80 years and 8 months of age and is survived by hers husband, Samuel Scoles and 3 children, Jesse Drake, Mrs. MW Berch and Louis Scoles.

NAPPANEE-Frank H. Shaum, 70, of 308 N. Locke, died Tuesday in Elkhart General Hospital where he was admitted earlier in the day. He was born June 16, 1905 near Nappanee. He married Bertha Goss, Aug. 31, 1924. She survives with a daughter, Miss Joan Shaum of Mishawaka, and a sister, Mrs. George Buss of Nappanee.
Friends may call in the Wright-Yoder Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Rev. Harry Spaeth, pastor of First Mennonite Church of which he was a member, will officiate, with burial in South Union Cemetery. He was a retired employee of Coppes Kitchens, having retired in 1966 after 29 years. He was also an employee of the Huffman Bakery of Nappanee.

Ralph R. Shaum, 83, 67352 Ind. 19, Wakarusa, died at 12:45 p.m. Friday in Greencroft Nursing Center, Goshen. He had been in ill health and a resident there for two years.
Born Oct. 4, 1900, in Wakarusa, he married Mabel Hochstetler on March 25, 1925.
A lifetime resident of the area, Mr. Shaum was a retired farmer and carpenter.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are a son, Wayne, Wakarusa; three daughters, Mrs. Lowell (Velorous) Hoover, Imlay City, MI; Mrs. William (Ruth) Bradley, Penndell, PA: and Mrs. Merl (Carylin) Chupp, Wakarusa; a sister, Mrs. Laura Smeltzer, Sarasota Fl.; and 11 grandchildren,and 15 great grandchildren. A brother and a sister preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 2-5 and 7-9pm Sunday at the Thompson & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m.Monday at North Main Street Mennonite Church of which Mr. Shaum was a member.The Rev. John King, pastor of the church, will officiate. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery, Nappanee.

Funeral services for the Rev. Warren C. Shaum, 79, Elkhart, Route 4, who died Thursday, Aug. 5, at his home, were held Sunday Aug.8, at the Yellow Creek Brick Mennonite Church. He had been in failing health for 10 years.
The Rev. Harold Myers, the Rev. Floyd Stutzman, and the Rev. William Miller officiated. Burial was in Yellow Creek Cemetery.
The Rev. Mr. Shaum, was born in Olive Township, Aug.7, 1891, to Leander and Katherine (Holdeman) Shaum. On Dec.14,1916, he was married to Amy Good, who survives. He was a retired minister, having served the Holdeman Mennonite Church and a congregation in Manistee, Michigan. He also worked as a carpenter and was a member of the Salem Mennonite Church.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Devon (Florence) Risser, Elkhart Rt. 4, and Mrs Kenneth (Elsie) Zook, Alberta, Canada; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Masten, Edwardsburg, MI and Mrs. George Smeltzer, Sarasota, Florida.; a brother, Ralph, Wakarusa; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A daughter, Valerie, preceded him in death, Dec. 10, 1938.

Former Nappanee/ Wakarusa resident, Hubbard Hill Estates, died at 11:50 a.m. in the estates, where she lived for five years.
She was born June 5, 1901, in Locke Township, Elkhart County, Indiana to Emanuel and Sarah (Wisler) Clouse. On May 27, 1922 in Nappanee, she married Jay W. Sheets. He died Oct. 28, 1988.
She assisted her husband in farming and was a homemaker. she was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Church.
Surviving are two sons, Don, Wakarusa and Keith, Nappanee; seven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son Robert; and an infant daughter, Mary Lou; two brothers, William H. and Chancey C. Clouse.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today at thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. The Rev. David Gruber and the Rev. Willard Beron, pastor and former pastor of Oak Grove Missionary Church will conduct the service. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery, Nappanee.

Deaths - David Sheline, 89, a lifelong resident of Elkhart county, died at 4:30 this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D.W. Weybright of New Paris. Death was caused indirectly by a fall suffered by Mr. Sheline in his room on Dec. 23. Mr. Shiline was born near New Paris, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Shiline on Jan. 14, 1843. His wife, Emma, to whom he was married in 1853, died on Jan. 14, 1922. Mr. Sheline had been a member of the New Paris Church of the Brethren since 1867.
He is survived by his daughter, 2 sons, Melvin Sheline of New Paris, and W.D. Sheline of South Bend; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a sister Mrs. William Livinghouse of Goshen; and a brother, Jefferson Sheline of Dowagiac, Mich. Funeral services will be held Friday at the home at 1:30 and at 2:00 at the New Paris Church of the Brethren. Burial in Baintertown.

Death of Elder Daniel Shively - Elder Daniel Shively, of Elkhart County, Ind. Born in Stark County, Ohio, May 31, 1827, died at the home of his son, Ira, in Goshen, Oct. 24, 1906, at the age of 79 years, 4 months, and 23 days. He was married to Esther Whitehead, Jan. 22, 1852. Not long after their marriage they were both received into the church by baptism.
In the year 1865, Solomon's Creek congregation was organized, with Frederick P. Loehr as minister, and the same year, and perhaps at the same meeting, Daniel Shively was elected to the office of deacon. Two years later, in 1858, he was called to the ministry. In this official capacity he labored with FP Loehr until 1865, when Elder Loehr, who was ordained in 1862 moved to Michigan. By the removal of Elder Loehr, Daneil Shively was left alone in the ministry until the next year, when George W. Cripewas chosen as helper.
His was a ministry of 47 years, all spent in the solomon's Creek church, excepting a short stay in Goshen years ago. He was ordained to the eldership in 1878. His education was very limited, yet he possessed a very good command of the English language.
He was laid to rest in the Baintertown cemetery Oct. 26, 1906, where rest the remains of 7 children, leaving only a loving companion and one son. New Paris, Ind. JH Warstler

Esther L. Shook, 56, of 22561 CR 104, died at 11:15 a.m. Saturday in Elkhart General Hospital. She had been in ill health. She was born Feb. 9, 1928, in Elkhart. As Esther Kurtz she married Charles J. Shook Nov. 2, 1943, in Elkhart. He survives with two sons, Kenton and Clifford, both of Elkhart; three daughters, Mrs. Oscar (Rachael) Kleitz, Elkhart, Mrs. Steve (Linda) Swoape, Nappannee, and Mrs. David (Patricia) George, White Pigeon; 15 grandchildren; one brother, Orville Kurtz; and one sister, Mrs. Raymond (Rosie) Hunter, both of Elkhart.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Paul Black, pastor of Kessington Community Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.
Mrs. Shook was a member of the Kessington Community Church, Disabled American Veterans Post 19 auxiliary and the Evangelistic Messengers Association. Memorials may to be given to the Cancer Society of Elkhart County.

Mrs. Alice Belle Simmons, 88 , widow of Myron E. Simmons, died at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at her home, ll9 South Michigan Street, Elkhart. Her husband formerly was a lumber dealer at Greenville, Miss. and she moved to Elkhart upon his death June 9, l9ll. She was born Feb. 5, l86l , in Jefferson Township, a daughter of John and Mary (Mock) Fuller, and married Mr. Simmons Jan. 2l, l883. She was a member of the Baptist denomination for 68 years, and affiliated with McCoy Baptist church in Elkhart. Surviving are a brother, Harry, of Kalamazoo, and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Laura Simmons, who cared for her since her illness. Friends may call at the White funeral home after 7 tonight. Services will be held there at 2 p.m. Friday. Rev. George E. Carlson, former pastor of the McCoy Church,and James L. Gurley, present pastor. Burial will be in the Oakridge Cemetery in Goshen.

Mrs. Amanda Jane Simmons, wife of Jacob, living six miles northwest of Goshen, died very suddenly Sunday evening of heart failure. She had been doing the chores about the barn, her husband being a paralytic, and returning to the house dropped dead. She leaves besides her husband, one son, George W. Simmons of Elkhart, two daughters, Mrs. Mahahan G. Hoke and Mrs. R.H. Himebaugh of Goshen, four sisters and three brothers. The funeral will be held Wednesday at l0:30 from the Brethren church, leaving family residence at 9 o'clock.

Mrs. Anna Mable Simmons, 66 , widow of Roscoe R. Simmons, died at 9:00 a.m. Sunday at her home, route two, Goshen, after a long illness. Death was attributed to a stroke suffered in l949.
Mrs. Simmons was born Sept. 8, l886, in Elkhart, a daughter of Jacob and Mary Ann Forry Martin. She married Mr. Simmons in l906 and he died in l943.
Surviving are two sons, John Martin Simmons and Willis L. Simmons, both of northwest of Goshen; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Friends are being received at the Culp funeral where services will be conducted by the Rev. W.I. Duker at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery.

Aaron Simmons, aged 74 years, died at his home, l 0 5 Canal street at 9 o'clock this morning. The deceased was stricken with apopexy about two o'clock.
Mr. Simmons was born in Miami Co., Ohio, April 26, l837, and came to Goshen in l847. His first wife died Nov. l2, 1900 and on Dec. 20, 1902, he was married to Elizabeth Rensberger, who survives him, with two children by the first wife, Mrs Elmer E. Oakes, and Mel Simmons, both of Goshen. The funeral will be held Friday, friends meeting at the house at l30 p.m. proceeding to the Church of the Brethren, corner of Fifth and Clinton streets, and interment will be in the West Side cemetery.

Mrs. Catherine Simmons Passed Away Following Injury.
Mrs. Catherine Simmons, aged seventy - four, died last night at 930 o'clock at her home, four miles northeast of Goshen. Death followed injuries from a fall due to paralysis.
Mrs. Simmons is survived by a son, Oliver, and a daughter, Mrs. Clara Farr. The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at l30 at the Baptist church, with Rev. Berry officiating. The remains will be viewed at the residence Saturday, until three o'clock when they will be brought to the Culp undertaking parlors to be viewed by Goshen relatives until the time of the funeral.

Mrs. Clara Ann Simmons, 63 years old, widow of Elmer E. Simmons, died at her home, 192 River Avenue, at l220 o'clock this morning, after an illness of three weeks, with heart trouble. Mrs. Simmons was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin H. Morian, and was a lifelong resident of this county.
Her husband died twenty years ago. Mrs. Simmons was a member of the First Brethren church, of the W.R.C. and of the Pythian Sisters.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Howard Congden, of Bristol, and Mrs. N.E. Michael, of Goshen; a son Noble Simmons, of Elkhart, three grandchildren; and three brothers, Bert Morian, of Elkhart; Elihu Morian, of Knox; and James Morian, of Chicago.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the Culp funeral home. The Rev. H.F.Stuckman will officiate, and burial will be made in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

David Lynne Simmons, ten months old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Simmons, died at 930 o'clock this morning at the Simmons home, four miles northeast of Goshen on the Middlebury Road after an illness of a week with complications.
Surviving the child are the parents, the following brothers and sisters, Norman, Arneal, and Jerry, and three grandparents, Alonzo Rodebaugh, of WaWasee, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Simmons, of Northeast of Goshen.

Earl R. Simmons Dies Here Sunday After Long Illness
Earl R. Simmons, 59 , of l09 West Lafayette street, died at ll50 Sunday at the Holm convalescent home where he had been a patient for the past week. Mr. Simmons, who had been a patient at Elkhart General hospital for three weeks before going to the convalescent home, died of a complication of ailments.
A native of Goshen, Mr. Simmons was born Jan. 9, l89l, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Zina Simmons. He married the former Laura Pippenger in l9l6 and she survived. For the past l0 or more years Mr. Simmons had been employed at the Goshen Manufacturing company.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Jack E., of Ft. Wayne; a daughter, Mrs. Max (Carol) Stutzman, of Elkhart; one grandchild; and a sister, Mrs. Edward Waumbaugh, of Goshen.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 200 p.m. at the Culp funeral home, the Rev. T.E. George officiating. Burial will be in the Violet cemetery. Friends are being received at the funeral home.

Eli Simmons Falls While At Work In Corn Field
Grim Reaper Gathers Harvester While Latter Was Gathering His Crop Of Corn
Eli Simmons, aged 52 years, died suddenly Saturday evening at six o'clock of apoplexy, on his farm, five miles northeast of Goshen on the Lima road. He was working with his son-in-law, Jesse York, husking corn in a corn field not far from the house. About four o'clock in the afternoon, he dropped over without a word of complaint or warning to his companion, who saw him fall.
He was conveyed to the house, where he died two hours later without regaining consciousness.
Eli Simmons was born in Miami Co. Ohio, being a son of John Simmons, who died twenty years ago. He came to this county forty-three years ago and has been a resident of Middlebury Township ever since. He leaves his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Jesse York and Mrs. Nelson Miller of Jefferson Township. Two brothers and a sister also survive, Noah Simmons of Middlebury, George W. Simmons of Peru; and Mrs. Barbara Mills of Inman ,Kansas.
The funeral will be Tuesday afternoon at l30 from the house, interment in the Cornell Cemetery.

Elmer E. Simmons, aged 44 years, died this morning at ll5 o'clock at his home three miles northeast of Goshen. Death followed a stroke of apoplexy last January.
Elmer E. Simmons was born in Goshen and was the son of the late Moses Simmons. His mother, Catherine Simmons, survives, also two brothers and a sister, Myron E., and Oliver Simmons and Mrs. Clara Farr. A wife and three children also survive, Wilma Mildred and Noble. The deceased has lived on his farm in Jefferson township since ten years ago. The funeral will be Sunday at two o'clock from the home, Rev. J.V. Fradenburg, officiating. Interment in the Oak Ridge cemetery.

The deceased was the daughter of the late John W. Simmons who died about seven years ago.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at l0:30 o'clock at the home, Rev. George W. Rench officiating. Burial will be in the Oakridge Cemetery. No flowers.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Wilma Stine, and one son, Earl Simmons, both of Goshen, two grandchildren; three brothers, Chauncy Dewey and Sidney Dewey, both of Goshen, and Jesse Dewey of Ligonier; and one sister, Mrs. Maggie Brumbaugh, of Elkhart.

Ike Simmons , 83 , Dies Here Monday
Retired Wholesale Confectionist Dies After Heart Attack
Stricken three weeks ago with a heart attack, Isaac Harrison (Ike) Simmons, 83 , retired wholesale confectionist, died at 4:l5 p.m. Monday at his home, 4l4 West Pike Street.
Mr. Simmons, born March 9, l865, at LaPorte, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac V. Simmons, had been a resident of Goshen most of his life. He operated the Twin City Grocery company in Elkhart from l9l0 until l9l9 and then entered the wholesale confectionary business, here until his retirement in l935. For a number of years he had been office attendant in the office of his son, Dr. L. H. Simmons on East Lincoln Avenue.
Mr. Simmons married Josephine Himebaugh in l888. She died in l929 and then in l930 he married Fern Helman, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife and the Goshen son are a daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Esther) Culbertson, of Goshen; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; a step-son, Gerald Helman, of Elkhart; and a step-daughter, Mrs. Howard Slabaugh, also of Elkhart.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Culp funeral home, where friends may call until the hour of the service. The Rev. W.I. Duker will officiate and burial will be in the Violet cemetery.

She had been ill for some time following an operation for Cancer. She is survived by her husband, one son, Dr. L.H. Simmons of this city, a daughter, Mrs. R.E.Culbertson of the Hawaiian Islands, five grandchildren and one brother, O.T. Himebaugh of this city.

Simmons: Katharine, wife of Aaron Simmons, died at 3 o'clock this morning at her home, 304 West Plymouth avenue, after an illness of eleven months. Last December she suffered a stroke of paralysis and since that time her condition gradually became critical. Her demise was the result of a second stroke at 11 o'clock last night. Mrs. Simmons was 63 years of age and was an old resident of Elkhart county, having been born one and one-half miles south of Dunlap. She was a highly respected lady and a devoted mother. Besides her husband, two children, Mrs. Elmer Oaks and Melvin Simmons, are left to mourn her sad death. The funeral will occur at 2 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon from the German Baptist church on the west side. Friends and relatives will leave the residence at l o'clock.

Mrs, May Simmons, 59 years old, died at her home, five miles northeast of Goshen Sunday, evening at eight o'clock. Her death was caused by cancer, from which she had been suffering for about a year.
Mrs. Simmons was the widow of Eli Simmons, who died twelve years ago. She is survived two daughters, Mrs. Vida Miller, and Mrs. Jesse York, both of east of Goshen.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at ten o'clock. Rev. Harvey J. Schrock will officiate and interment will be in the Cornell cemetery.

Moses Simmons, aged 62 , died at 2 o'clock this morning at his home in Jefferson township, 3 l/2 miles northeast of Goshen, of heart disease. He retired last night in apparent good health, experiencing however, a shortness in breathing, as he had during the day while at work. His death was very sudden.
Mr. Simmons was one of the old residents of Goshen and a pillar in the Baptist church at which he was a devotee. He was an excellent citizen, an exemplary christian and filled out the office of councilman made vacant by the resignation of the late W.W. McVitty from the first ward from l869 to May l870, while for the past few years he has spent his time on his farm where he was engaged in the culture of peppermint.
He leaves a wife and four children. The funeral will occur from the Baptist church in this city at l o'clock Monday afternoon, with interment at Oak Ridge cemetry.

Death of Myron E. Simmons.
Myron E. Simmons, formerly of Goshen, died Monday evening on the cotton plantation of J.W. Miller, near Greenville, Miss. where he had been employed since last fall. Death was due to apoplexy. Deceased was born in Goshen July l9, l859. His father, Moses Simmons died in l897. His mother, Catherine Simmons, resides on the farm two miles north of Goshen. Her son Ollie, resides with her. A sister, Mrs. Clara Farr, resides northeast of Goshen.
Myron E. Simmons, leaves a daughter, Belle, and a son, Roy of Elkhart. Another son Ralph died in l902. The deceased was a cousin of Orville L. Simmons of Goshen. He once conducted a woodyard in Goshen. He was a good mechanic and millwright. He operated a small sawmill on the farm, and afterwards with his brother conducted a sawmill in Missouri. He was employed in Mississippi as a millwright. The family has a lot in Oakridge cemetery and the body will be brought here for burial.

Oliver E. Simmons, aged 49 , died at his home, 80l South Emerson street, on Friday, after a six weeks illness with stomach trouble. Mr. Simmons had been paralyzed for several months, but ran an auto line here until his sickness, shortly before Thanksgiving. One sister, Mrs. Clara M. Farr, of Dallas , Texas, suvives him, and Mrs. G.A. Whippy is a niece and Knoble Simmons is a nephew. Funeral services Monday at two o'clock at the Baptist church. The body is at the Culp undertaking establishment until time of the funeral.

Was well known Insurance Man In Goshen for Many Years.
Orville L. Simmons, aged 47, died at his home, 4l9 South Fifth street, at 7 o'clock Wednesday evening, shortly after he had suffered an attack of heart trouble in the office of his uncle, Aaron S. Zook, Mr. Simmons was found lying unconscious on the floor bt Elhanan Hess, Robert Meyers, and Eugene Davis, all of whom occupy offices in close proximity at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Main street, after they had been told by two boys that a man was lying on the floor in Mr. Zook's office. This happened about 530 Wednesday evening. Physicians were called and Mr. Simmons was removed by ambulance to his home, where he died a short time later. He had apparently been in his usual health several hours earlier in the afternoon, when he was seen by a number of persons. Mr. Simmons, although his own office is on the same floor of the building, had gone to Mr. Zook's office for the afternoon, during the latter's absence.
Mr. simmons has for more then ten years been engaged in insurance business in Goshen, and was one of the prominent men in the business life of Goshen , although for the past several years he had given up much (blurred) it owing to ill health. He was born in the same house in which he died, at 4l9 South Fifth street, and had always made his home there. He was a graduate of the local high school and of Purdue university. He then became an instructor of botany and science at Tufts collage, and later was engaged in newspaper work in several cities in the south. Since the death of his father he has been engaged in the business in Goshen.
He is survived only by his sister, Miss Mable Simmons, with whom he lived, and by a number of cousins and distant relatives. He was for several years a member of the Library board , and always an interested church worker, although he was not a member of any religious sect.
For a number of years he had been afflicted with attacks of heart trouble , and recovered from several serious illnesses.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 330 o'clock at the home on South fifth street.

It is our painful duty today to record the death of a near and dear neighbor, Mrs. Jennie Simmons, wife of Mr. Isaac A. Simmons, an attorney of this city, who died at four o'clock , on Tuesday morning, Jan. l3th, l880 of consumption, aged near 33 years.
The deceased was a daughter of Mrs. Sarah McKibbon of this city. She was born in Ohio, and when quite young came to LaGrange county, this state. About fourteen years ago she came with her parents to this city. A year or two later, she became a member of the Presbyterian Church. She was married in l868 to Mr. Isaac Simmons. She leaves a pleasant and happy home, two bright little children - a boy, and a girl - and many relatives and ardent friends who deeply mourn her untimely death.
It was our good fortune to be a near neighbor of the deceased and her husband for a number of years, and we never knew a more estimable lady, kinder neighbor, or a more affectionate wife and mother. The loss sustained in her death will be deeply felt by a large circle of relatives, friends and neighbors. We could not feel more keenly the death of any neighbor, owing to our pleasant and intimate associations with the family in the past, and our friend, the sorely bereaved husband, has our heart-felt sympathy in this great affliction.
The funeral of the deceased will take place this forenoon from the family residence on Fifth Street,her pastor, Rev. H.L. Vannuys, conducting the services.

Young Girl Drops Dead
Treva Simmons Dies Suddenly Of Paralysis of Heart
Abnormal Condition Known as "Status Lymphaticus" Causes Demise at Prick of Pin.
Treva Jeanette Simmons, fifteen years of age, daughter of Mrs. Minnie Lane, dropped dead Sunday morning about 9:30 at the Lane home, corner of Middlebury and Fifth streets. The girl was dressing for Sunday School and her mother was assisting her. She complained to her mother that a pin was sticking her, and stepping before a mirror, she suddenly collapsed into a chair. Death was almost immediate.
Dr. Kirby was called. Later, the coroner with Drs. Kirby, Bicknell, Snapp, Dreese, held an autopsy. Death was found due to the rare condition know as "status lymphaticus" This is an enlargement and continued operation of the gland near the heart, which in a normal child disappears at the age of ten years. The gland continues to pump its secretions into the blood, and any slight shock is apt to cause immediate death. The life of a child in such a state is always very brief.
Treva Simmons was born in Goshen. She was employed as a clerk in the People's Coal company office. She was a member of the Reformed church and was dressing for Sunday School when her death occurred.
The little maid is survived by her mother; her father, William Simmons of Detroit; three brothers, George and Arthur Simmons, and Ralph Lane, and a sister, Lilah Simmons.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2:30 from the residence, Rev. C.K. Staudt officiating. The interment will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Surviving are the husband, her father, Lawrence Werner, of Bronson, Mich., and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Ann Junker, and Mrs. Jean Bowerson, both of Bronson.
Friends may call at the D.O. McComb funeral Home in Ft. Wayne after 700 p.m. today, and funeral services will be held at ll00 a.m. Friday at the Cresent Avenue EUB church in Ft. Wayne. Graveside services will be held in Violett cemetery in Goshen at 230 p.m. Friday.

Charles G. Simmons, 74, yardman at the Pine Tree Inn on U.S. 33, southeast of Goshen, for many years, died suddenly at 10:00 a.m. Monday in a heart attack in his cabin near the inn, now the suburban home of Mr. and Mrs. George Witter.
Born North of Goshen May 9, 1873, Mr. Simmons was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Simmons. He had been a lifelong resident of Elkhart County.
Surviving are a son Gorden, of Goshen; an adopted daughter Mrs. David Pepper, of Goshen; 10 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Culp Funeral Home, the Rev. T.E. George, pastor of the Church of the Brethren officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home.

Miss Mabel Simmons, 64, a life long resident of Goshen, died at about five o'clock last evening at her home, 408 South Fifth street. She had been in failing health for several months, complications causing her death.
Miss Simmons was born in Elkhart County on July 3, 1872, the daughter of Isaac and Jennie Simmons. One brother, Orville; preceded her in death.
The only survivor are three cousins, Mrs. Wm. Nymeyer, of Goshen, Mrs. Frank Roupe, of LaGrange, and Mrs. Elizabeth Spaulding, of San Diego, Cal.
The body was removed to the Stiver funeral home where funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. T.V.D. Dillion, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, of which Miss Simmons was a member will officiate. Burial will be made in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

SIMMONS --- Ralph Simmons, aged 18 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Simmons, of 416 Middlebury street, died at 9 o'clock this morning of typhoid fever, after an illness of two weeks. The young man had been in Mishawaka since school closed and came home a week ago last Friday ill with what was thought to be Malaria fever. He was a member of the junior class of the Goshen High School and had a host of friends who mourn his demise. Besides his parents he leaves his brother, Roy Simmons.

Elmer l. Simmons, 63, died last evening at 8:45 o'clock at the home of DeFoe Leedy, 511 South Seventh street, of apoplexy. He had suffered a stroke of apoplexy five years ago and although he had partially recovered he had remained in ill health. Yesterday afternoon he had another stroke which proved fatal.
Mr. Simmons was born in Marshall county, and was a member of Zion Grange. He is survivied by his wife, Mrs. Mittie Simmons, three grandchildren, and two brothers, Charles Simmons and Roscoe Simmons, of near Goshen.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Leedy home. The Rev. Walter Gibson will officiate and burial will be made in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Mel Simmons died Monday evening at 10 o'clock at his home, 214 South Third street, of apoplexy. He was stricken while on duty as a volunteer fireman Sunday afternoon.
Mel Simmons was born in this county, Dec. 25, 1866 and had resided in Goshen nearly all his life. In 1890 he was united in marriage with Miss Jennie DeBoer, who was with a sister, Mrs. elmer Oakes, survives. He had been a volunteer fireman for more then twenty years and was also a member of the K. of P. and Moose Lodges. These organizations will have charge of the funeral which will take place Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Reformed Church, Rev. Wallace W. Foust officiating. Friends may view the remains at the home between the hours of 10 an 1 o'clock Thursday. Burial will take place in the Oak Ridge cemetery.

SUDDEN DEATH Of Isaac A. Simmons Sunday Morning of Apoplexy.
FEW HOURS ILLNESS
Retired About 10:30 Saturday Evening In His Usual Health But Soon His Fatal Attack Seized Him.
Another prominent Goshen citizen has been suddenly summoned from this world's activities. Attorney Isaac Allen Simmons passed away Sunday Morning at 3:45 o'clock at his late home, 419 South Fifth street. His unexpected death was due to apoplexy. The shock to the family and public generally is the more severe because the deceased was taken away while enjoying his usual health and actively engaged in the management of his law practice.
As usual, Mr. Simmons transacted business at his office and the courthouse until late Saturday afternoon. He ate a hearty supper and after a bath retired about ten o'clock. Shortly after, his daughter, Miss Mabel Simmons and Miss Kate Beaver were attracted to his bed chamber by groans. Mr. Simmons complained of severe headache and nausea. He seemed to be in a semi-conscious condition. Dr. M.K. Kreider was summoned immediately. Their efforts to relieve him proved futile. Occasionally he would show signs of rallying, only to lapse into a comatose state. At three o'clock he became unconscious, the spark of life being extinguished forty-five minutes later. The daughter, Miss Mabel, Miss Beaver and a number of neighbors were at the bedside when death occurred.
Isaac Allen Simmons was 57 years old. He was born December 28, 1845, in Miami county, Ohio, being a son of Andrew and Mary A. Simmons. Deceased came to Elkhart county with his parents in 1847, his father dying in 1861. Deceased passed his early life on the farm and attended school.
In 1863 he enlisted in the twenty-first Indiana Volunteer infantry, being in Co. A, which was from Elkhart county. They were assigned to the department of the Gulf. and went to New Orleans under command of General N.P. Banks, participating in all the engagements of the Red River expedition to Shreveport, La., and the battles of Marksville, Plains and Yellow Bayou. At Baton Rouge the regiments was surprised by a rebel battery, but the confederate forces, though larger, were repulsed and the battery captured and turned on the rebels. Mr. Simmons regiment was thenconverted into the First Indiana Artillery. On January 10, 1866 he was honorably discharged and returned to Goshen. His bravery on several occasions occasioned official recognition. Heavy cannonading caused his partial deafness, for which debility he was pensioned.
He was a student in the Goshen Collegiate Institute and studied law at the University of Michigan, having previously read law with Attorneys Wilson Osborne, having also taught school. He returned from the university and was married to Miss Jennie McKibben of this city in June 1869, being admitted to the bar at about the same time, when he began practicing law here. Deceased was city attorney for Goshen ten years, from 1882 to 1892, and was previously deputy prosecuting attorney for this district for six years, his term of office expiring in 1880. During his incumbency he conducted the state prosecutions and represented this county in all legal matters.
His wife died January 13, 1880.
Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church of this city and belonged to the Odd Fellows and Knights of Honor. Though not a member of the G.A.R. be affiliated with the veterans of the local post and contributed to its support. He was well known in the legal profession throughout northern Indiana, and was a man whose sterling qualities had won for him a successful career and the respect of all. The community at large recognizes a distinct loss in his removal by his sudden and unexpected death.
Those who survive are his daughter, Miss Mabel Simmons, his son Orville Simmons, of the editorial staff of the Beaumont, Texas, Journal, also one sister, Mrs. Mary Puterbaugh and five brothers, Aaron, John, Abraham, Jacob, and Noah Simmons. Aaron Simmons resides in Goshen, while the location of Jacob, who is in the west, is at present unknown. The sister and other brothers reside in this county. Word from Beaumont, Texas, states that Orville Simmons will arrive in Goshen not later then Tuesday.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later.

MRS. JENNIE SIMMONS DIES AT HOSPITAL
Mrs. Jennie Simmons, 74, saleswoman at the plaut department store for 33 years, died at Goshen hospital at 1:30 a.m. today. She had been a patient at the hospital since Nov. 19, her death being caused by a complication of ailments.
Mrs. Simmons was born March 9, 1871, at Grand Rapids, Mich., a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter DeBoer. She came to Goshen when a young woman and married Melvin Simmons Aug. 3, 1890. His death occurred in 1913.
Surviving are the following brothers and widowed sisters: Mrs. Elizabeth Bailey, of South Bend; Mrs. Ella Farrell, of Goshen; William P. DeBoer, of Flint, Mich.; Mrs. Gertrude Armstrong, of Cawstin, B.C. Can.; Charles A. DeBoer, of Goshen; and Mrs. Racheal Harper, of Elkhart.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Culp Funeral Home, the Rev. S.C. Kollath, pastor of the Reformed Church, of which Mrs. Simmons was a member. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home from Saturday morning until the hour of the service.

Retta Simpkins, 88, of 7700 Lampson, Garden Grove, Calif., a former Elkhart resident, died Friday morning. She was born June 25, 1883, in Elkhart, and had lived in California 14 years. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. L.E. (Kathryn) Warfel, Garden Grove; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Mrs. Simpkins was a member of the Loa chapter of OES of Elkhart and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. Burial was in Westminster Memorial Park, Westminster, Calif.

Aaron Burr Smee of 1709 Frances avenue, aged 48 years, died at 10:20 o'clock Saturday night. Death was caused by an internal malignant growth. Mr. Smee was severely injured in a wreck at Kalamazoo seven years ago, and it is thought his malady may have resulted from that. However, it was not until a year ago that he began to complain of abdominal pains and he continued to follow his occupation as a freight conductor on the New York Central until two months ago. He was removed to Elkhart General hospital on December 15 and an operation was undertaken but could not be completed without endangering the patient's life. He was returned to his home on Christmas day.
The funeral service will be held at Castle United Brethren church, of which Mr. Smee was a member, at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday. The service will be conducted by Rev. H.C. Beauchamp. Friends will assemble at the home at 2 o'clock, at which time a prayer service will be conducted. The body may be seen at the home at any time until 2 o'clock on Wednesday. At present the body will be placed in the Rice cemetery mausoleum, but burial will take place at the Three Oaks, Mich., cemetery.
Mr. Smee, who was a son of Jacob M. and Martha Smee, was born at Three Oaks on July 15, 1875, and that place on April 2, 1904, he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Rogers. They came to Elkhart 17 years ago, and Mr. Smee entered the service of the New York Central railroad company.
Mr. Smee is survived by his wife and four children, Edward Dale and John William, Mildred G. and Marietta Katherine Smee; two brothers, John H. Smee of Battle Creek and Edward R. Smee of Benton Harbor, and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Wherle of Marshall, Mich., and Mrs. Rose Binkley and Mrs. Oliver Albert of Warrensburg, Ill.
Mr. Smee was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.

Wakarusa-Arthur R. Smeltzer, 602,N.Elkhart St. Wakarusa, died Thursday at his home of a heart attack. He was a machinist at Elkhart Products Corp. Mr. Smeltzer was born Aug. 24, 1906 in St. Joseph County. He was married on Oct. 6, 1928 to Goldie Blocker.

Services for Mrs. Myrtle M. Smeltzer, 94, 1300 Greencroft Dr. who died Saturday at Greencroft Nursing Center, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Olive Mennonite Church. Two of her sons, the Rev.Carl, and the Rev. Walter Smeltzer, and the Rev. Elno Steiner, a son-in-law, and the Rev. Dale Shank pastor of Olive Mennonite, will officiate at the service.
Pallbearers for burial in Olive Cemetery will be Charles Steiner, John King, Thomas Hartman, and Arnold, Kevin, Sherwyn, and Glennis Smeltzer.
She was born July 23, 1895 and was married July 3,1923 to Calvin B. Smeltzer. He died in Nov.1959. She was a homemaker, and a member of Olive Church.
Surviving are two daughters; Mrs. Howard (Lois)King,Goshen and Mrs. Elno (Mabel) Steiner North Lawrence, Oh, two stepsons, Clyde Smeltzer, Middlebury, and Loyal Smeltzer, Alburquerque, N.M. 29 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ida Weaver, Versailles, Mo. She was preceded in death by four grandchildren and two sisters, and two brothers.

Ida Mae Smeltzer, 90, Rt. 2 Hayward Wis. died at 3:40 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, 1989, at Hayward Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 15, 1898 in Elkhart County, As Ida Mae Culp, she married John H. Smeltzer on July 22,1920. He died Jan.19,1966. Surviving are five daughters, Primrose, Indianapolis, Mrs. LeRoy (Verda) Schrock, Hayward, Thelma Elion, and Edith Hyche, both of Goshen, and Bernice Schsrock, Hubbard, Ore.; a son, Kenneth, Alvordton, Oh, 12 grandchildren; 17 step grandchildren; a sister Agnes Culp, Nappanee; and a brother, Ivan Culp,Elkhart. A daughter, a son, a brother and a grandson are deceased.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Yoder Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Holdeman Mennonite Church, Wakarusa.
The Rev. Simon Gingerich and the Rev.Sam Troyer will officate. Burial will be in Olive Cemetery.
Mrs. Smeltzer moved to Wisconsin in 1985 from Goshen and was a member of the Holdeman Church.

Cora, aged eighteen, wife of Sherman Juday, and daughter of S.P. Smith, died of lung fever, last week (Nov. 19, 1889) at her home near Benton. The deceased was an estimable lady and her death is a shock to the community, and is especially so to the husband who is bereft of his companion within less than one year after their union.

Mrs Elizabeth Smith, 83, widow of John Smith, died at 7:30 last evening at the home of a son, Allen Smith, 2 ˝ miles southeast of New Paris. She had suffered a stroke of paralysis 10 days ago. Mrs. Smith was born in Elkhart county on Nov. 12, 1849, a daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Butt. She became a member of the Lutheran church at Benton when a young girl.
Surviving are the son, a daughter, Mrs. Orus Chiddister, of Millersburg, and 3 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:00 at the home and at 2:30 at the Solomon's Creek church. The Rev. Mr. Eaton will officiate, and burial will be made at Solomon's Creek.

Mrs. Wright Smith, mention of whom we made in yesterday's issue as lying at the point of death with consumption at New Paris, died yesterday. She was about 30 years old and leaves a husband and three children to mourn her demise. The funeral services will be held tomorrow at the Methodist church in New Paris, of which denomination she was a member.

Ruth Elizabeth "Betty" Sommers, 82, formerly of C.R. 13 South, Elkhart, died at 9am Thursday in Americana Health Care Center, Elkhart, following an illness. She was born in Goshen on April 11, 1928. He died May 31, 1992.
She was a homemaker and a member of Clearview United Brethren Church, Goshen. She was a life member of Women's Missionary Association and a member of Sunnyside Senior Citizens and the American Association of Retired Persons.
Surviving are two daughters, Carrie Newell and Mary Nelson, both of Elkhart; four sons, Donald E., Herbert C., Thedore D., and Larry, all of Elkhart; 15

ELKHART-Howard T. Stevens, 72, of 1900 Benham Ave., died Thursday morning (May 31, 1990) in his home after an illness.
He was born May 20, 1918 in Elkhart. He married Paula Marchesseau on Jan. 16, 1948 in Mishawaka. She survives with three daughters, Marcia Stevens, Wichita, Kan., Mrs. Jerry (Sherrie) Conley, Mallard, Iowa, and Mrs. Larry (Vicki) Barrett, Elkhart; a son, Thomas H., of Elkhart; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a half brother and four half sisters.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, where services will be at 11 am Monday. The Rev. Thomas Prochaska of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer will officiate. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.
Mr. Stevens was employed for 47 years at Vincent Bach (formerly Buescher's Band Instrument Co.) until his retirement in 1984. He was more recently employed at Blessing's School Music Inc. until late 1989. He served on the board of directors at the Elkhart Legal Aid Service, Inc. and was a member of the Urban League Board, Federal Band Instrument Credit Union Board and the Board of Directors of the United Labor Agency. He was former president of the UAW Local 364 and served on the UAW CAP council.

RAY SPOTTS DIES AT HIS HOME HERE
LIFELONG RESIDENT OF GOSHEN IS DEAD AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Ray Spotts, 64, former city street commissioner for 17 years, died at 5 a.m. today at his home, 632 North Main Street, after a long illness. His condition had been critical for several days.
Mr. Spotts had served as a Republican precinct committee man for 43 years and he was Goshen's first scoutmaster, serving in that capacity in 1925 for Goshen's first Boy Scout Troop, No. 1, St. Mark's Methodist Church.
A native and lifelong resident of Goshen, Mr. Spotts was born Sept. 26, 1893, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Spotts. Before accepting appointment as street commissioner by Mayor Frank S. Ebersole, Mr. Spotts worked for many years at the IXL Furniture Company. He was a member of St. Mark's church and the Goshen Elk's Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, the former Eunice Ogle, to whom Mr. Spotts was married June 27, 1912; two daughters, Mrs. LeRoy ( Ruth ) Rice, and Mrs. Charles ( Helen ) Garringer, both of Goshen; two grandchildren a brother, James Spotts, South Bend; and a stepbrother, Frank McCulloch, Goshen.
Friends will be received from Friday morning until the hour of the funeral Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Culp Funeral Home. The Rev. A.P. Beale will officiate and burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.

William E. Spotts, 88, died at 3:40 o'clock Thursday afternoon at his home, 301 West Wilden Avenue, following a prolonged illness of complications of old age. He had been confined to his bed for the past four weeks.
Mr. Spotts was born in Fulton County, Ind., January 6, 1848, the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Spotts. He came to this community 45 years ago. Mr. Spotts was a member of St. Mark's Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary, three sons, Fred and Ray, both of Goshen, and James, of South Bend, a stepson, Frank McCulloch, of Stayton, Ore., eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the home. The Rev. C.W. Anderson will officiate. Burial will be made in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the home until the hour of the service.

Mrs. Stewart was born April 7, 1940, to Charlie Smith and Madgie Castle in Kayford, W.Va., and married Franklin D. Stewart on March 19, 1955, in Charleston, W.Va. He died Aug. 2, 1995, in South Bend.
She is survived by two daughters, Debbie R. Stewart and Madge L. Stewart, both of Elkhart; three sons, Franklin B. and Brian K. Stewart, both of Elkhart, and Steve V. Stewart of Manchester, Tenn.; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Also surviving are two sisters, Betty Stewart of Elkhart and Dolly Grancy of West Virginia; and a brother, Bert Smith of Florida. Two brothers, Charlie and Walt Smith, are deceased. Mrs. Stewart was formerly employed with Eastern Home Products. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Edgar M. Stiver, 82, died at his home in Benton Thursday evening at 9:15. He had suffered two strokes in the past three weeks. He was born 2 1/2 miles east of Benton Sept. 16, 1863, the son of Eli and Sarah (McCann) Stiver. On Sept. 19, 1889 he married Ella Peoples who died July 20, 1941. They had lived on a farm near Benton until ten years ago when he retired and moved to his present home. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Lottie Kline of Benton; two sons, Jay of Benton and Harold of Warsaw; five grandchildren; a brother, Charles of Millersburg; and a sister, Miss Arvilla Stiver also of Millersburg. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 o'clock in the Rohrer funeral chapel at New Paris. Burial will be in Jackson cemetery.

On June 15, 1929, he was married to Lillie Hoffer, who survives. He was employed by Pacific Car and Foundry, retiring six years ago.Surviving with the widow are three stepdaughters, Mrs. Jimmie (Doris) Marchand, Gary, Mrs. Mabel Browley, Goshen, and Mrs. Sherman (Harriet) Coy, Warsaw; seven step grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Milton Stiver died at his home in New Paris Monday morning at 3:00 after an illness of several months. He was born 3 ˝ miles southeast of New Paris Apr. 6, 1862. He was the son of Michael and Mary Stiver and lived on the farm, with his parents until Dec. 25, 1885 at which time he was united in marriage to Amanada Treesh. A few years later he moved to New Paris at his present home at which place he has lived for 25 years. He leaves a wife, 2 daughters, Mrs. Walter Scrannage of near Benton and Mrs. Geo. Yoder of this city, 2 grandchildren, Kathern Lavon and John Milton Scrannage, an aged mother, Mrs. Mary Stiver, and 3 brothers, Tilman Stiver of New Paris, Levi Stiver of New Paris and C.B. Stiver of this city. Funeral services will be held at the ME church at New Paris. Burial at New Paris cemetery.

SARAH JANE STIVER Mrs. Sarah J. Stiver, aged 68 years, widow of the late Elias Stiver, passed away Tuesday afternoon about 3 o'clock at her home east of Benton and south of Millersburg. The deceased was born and raised in Elkhart County, being the daughter of Isaac McCann, a Virginian. The funeral will be Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the M. E. Church in Benton. Interment in the Jackson cemetery. Four children survive.

Mora STOTTS, 77, a lifelong resident of Elkhart county, died Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. at his farm one mile north of Goshen on the Indiana avenue road. He had been ill for th past three weeks, complications causing his death.
Mr. Stotts, was born in Elkhart county May 28, 1867, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Stotts. His first wife, the former Lovina Cripe, died in 1908. His second wife, the former Ann Algiers, survives.
Also surviving are one son, Ray Stotts, a step-son, Harold Ramer, and a foster daughter, Mr. P. C. Nichols, all of th Goshen community; three grandchildren; a half-brother, Charles Stotts of Goshen; and a step-sister, Mrs. Ray Bouse of Toledo.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Culp funeral home, the Rev. H. H. Rowsey, pastor of the First Brethren church, of which Mr. Stotts was a member, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home.

Mrs. Julia Anna Stotts, 70, widow of Mora Stotts, died at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at her home, 701 River avenue, where she had been seriously ill since suffering a stroke last Feb. 21.
A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Allgier, Mrs. Stotts was born September 28, 1878, in Logan county, Ohio. Her husband, to whom she was married Sept. 3, 1911, died March 9, 1946. Mrs. Stotts was well known for her home made baked goods, which she sold to a number of Goshen families for many years.
Surviving her are a son, Harold R. Ramer, a foster daughter, Mrs. Mary Nichols, and a step-son, Ray Stotts, all of Goshen; two brothers, Joe Allgier, of Chicago, and John S. Allgier, of Lima, O; and a sister, Mrs. Dora Yoder, of West Liberty, OH.
The body was taken from the Clup funeral home to Stotts home late today and friends will be received at the River avenue residence until noon Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the First Brethren church, where the body will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00. The Rev. Willis E. Ronk will officiate and burial will be in Violett cemetery.

Died at 33 Years - Helena Stouder, aged 33 years, wife of Hiram Stouder, died at 8"30 this morning at her home in Elkhart, 1627 Morton Ave. The couple moved to Elkhart from Goshen last May. They have no children. The maiden name of the deceased was Helena Shipper and she was born in Holland where a sister and brother reside. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Shipper reside in Grand Rapids, Mich. As do also three brothers, Cornelius, John and James Shipper. Two sisters survive, Mrs. Michael Mal of Anderson; and Mrs. Frank Stamets, of Goshen. The funeral will be held Sunday, leaving Elkhart on a special car at 2:00 and arriving in Goshen at 2:30. There will be services at the German Baptist church, interment in Oak Ridge cemetery.

ABRAHAM STROHM
Strohm, Abraham, born March 11, 1839, in Uxbridge Township, Upper Canada, died Dec. 26, 1915, in Goshen, Ind. of neuralgia of the heart, aged 76 years, 9 months and 9 days. He came to the United States with his parents in 1840, and returned to Canada in 1848. He again came to the United States in 1852, and settled in Elkhart County, Ind. Working by day and studying by night, he educated himself for teaching which occupation he followed for 11 years. In 1870 he located at New Paris and engaged in the mercantile business in 1875. In 1893, he moved to Goshen, Ind. And continued in business until his death. He was married to Sarah E. Miller in 1861. He was baptized into the Church of the Brethren in 1863. He was the father of 2 sons and one daughter. The widow and one son survive him. Services by J.W. Kitson in the Goshen City church Dec. 23. Interment in Baintertown cemetery.

MRS. EMMA A. STUCKMAN
(July 4, 1926) Passed to Beyond
Mrs. Emma A. Stuckman, the subject of the accompanying picture, was born in Juniata county, Pa., in 1836 and moved to Milford, this state in 1845. She commenced teaching school in a little log cabin four miles west of Milford in 1850, at the age of 14. The school house was a rude structure, 14' x 16' with a puncheon floor and seats, and a door of the same material. An old fashioned latch string furnished the means of entering the building. When Mrs. Stuckman began her teaching career her only means of compensation consisted of a subscription of $2 per week. This nevertheless was sufficient means of support since her daily wardrobe consisted of one calico dress (which was laundered each Saturday) and her foot apparel was nature's best.
Two beautiful braids of hair taking the place of our present string of pearls. She was always a strict moral swasionist and able to control the most unruly pupils without punishment.
The indefatigable industry of Mrs. Stuckman has been an inspiration to every individual who has met her. Her faithfulness in the minutest duty will be remembered by all who wended their way to her school door. The sterling and sturdy characteristics of worthy parents were happily blended in the character and disposition of the daughter who seemed born with a genius for the school room. For fifty-five years she taught school continuously, completing her 109th term at the age of 69, when she was the teacher of a school near Nappanee.
For 12 years during this period, Mrs. Stuckman was an instructor of the University of Valparaiso, Ind. Her interest in the students and school never wavered during the few years when she was obliged to relinquish the activities of former days. Nor did the love and homage of the students for their benefactor subside.
Innumerable calls and pilgrimages have been made to the home of Mrs. Stuckman by devoted students and friends during the past months and up to the very last day that she could receive them. Practically all of the members of her family including her husband during their early years were pupils of Mrs. Stuckman. Numbering among them were her own children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Stuckman himself was also a veteran teacher, having served for over thirty years in that profession. At one time the mother, father, two sons and daughter, having taught in the same school at the same time, a very unusual coincidence. Their combined years of teaching totaling nearly a century. She has always been an active worker in Sunday school and church, especially the charity side of it. Often furnishing clothes and books to poor children to enable them to attend school.
Surviving Mrs. Stuckman are 2 sons, Dr. E.D. Stuckman of New Paris, Ind. And Major W.M. Stuckman, USA at Los Angeles, Cal., Mrs. Ethel A. Strycker of New Paris, Ind. 2 grandsons, Edgar Stuckman of Elkhart and Wm. E. Strycker of Mishawaka, Ind., 3 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Catherine Boulton, of Warsaw, Ind. And one brother, George McLaughlin, of Nappanee, Ind.
Mrs. Stuckman passed to the great beyond on the evening of July 3, 1926, at 10 pm at the age of 89 years. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday, July 6. Owing to her belief in the union of christian workers, every church in our little village helped to fulfill the request of Mrs. Stuckman. One room was reserved for her pupils of former years from far and near.

Mr. Sturm, who for many years followed the trade of hand weaver, was born in Austria, December 3, 1847. He came to America 25 years ago. Surviving beside Mrs. Hettinger are four sons, Thomas Sturm of Elkhart, Paul who lives in Austria, and Laurence and Philip of Chicago.

Mrs. Rebecca J. Swart, 76, life-long resident of Elkhart county, died Tuesday night at her home in New Paris following an illness of the past 10 days. She was born in this county Sept. 8, 1852 and was a member of the First Brethren church of New Paris. Surviving are a son, William E. Swart, of Elkhart, one graddaughter, one great-granddaughter, one sister Mrs. Esther Troup, of Warsaw, and 2 brothers, LM Whitehead of Jerome, Idaho and Jacob Whitehead, of Elkhart. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the home. Burial in Maple Grove cemetery.

GERTRUDE F. SWARTZ

Gertrude F. Swartz, 77, of 2410 Morehouse Ave., died unexpectedly at her home Sunday evening.
She was born May 3, 1892, in Elkhart, and was married to Harry Swartz, June 30, 1909, in Elkhart. He died Feb. 4, 1966. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Kathleen) Erb of Bristol; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Mowery of Los Angeles.
Friends will be received at the Westbrook-Metz Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today. Services will be there at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. F. Kaye Bass of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery. Mrs. Swartz was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

ELSIE M. ANGLEMYER SWIHART
Aug. 31, 1909- June 29, 2000
Elsie M. Anglemyer Swihart, 90, 717 S. 13th St., Goshen, died at 12:50 p.m. Thursday in her home.
She was born Aug.31, 1909, in Locke Township, Elkhart County, to Jonas A. and Luella (Drake) Miller. On Nov. 9, 1931, she married Elmer Anglemyer. He died April 17, 1967. She then married Austin A. Swihart on Oct. 7, 1972. He died April 26, 1984.
Swihart was a homemaker and head cook at Goshen College from 1967 to 1972. She was a member of Yellow Creek Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are three sons, Dale, Glen and Keith Anglemyer, all of Goshen; four stepdaughters, Opal (Mrs. Levi) Anglemyer, and Madalene Anglemyer, both of Goshen; Janette Steel, Ohio, and Becky Martin, Colorado; a stepson, Keith Swihart, Goshen; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel Edelman, Elkhart; and a stepsister, Alice (Mrs. Joseph) Krallman, Wakarusa.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie Broadworth; two grandsons, David and Douglas Anglemyer; a granddaughter, Sadie Anglemyer; a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Bernice Culp and Emma Miller; and a brother, Kenny Miller.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home, Wakarusa and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Yellow Creek Church of the Brethren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the church. The Rev. Dean Kagarise, interim pastor at the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Yellow Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to LaCasa, Goshen, or the church.
