LESLIE LEE MOCK
VERN VINCENT
GOSHEN NEWS, JULY 1, 1956
TWO BOYS, BORN IN GOSHEN ARE KILLED IN CRASH
Leslie Lee Mock And Vern Vincent Are Fatally Hurt
Two 16-year old youths, both born in Goshen, were fatally injured about 8:30 p.m. Sunday when the motorcycle they were riding collided with an automobile in Cass County, Mich., about seven miles north of Elkhart and near the rural community in which both boys lived.
Dead are Leslie Lee Mock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mock, Route 5, Elkhart, and Vernon Ray Vincent, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Vincent, who reside across the road from the Mocks.
Mock, riding behind Vincent on the motorcycle, died instantly, Vincent died at 7:05 a.m. today in Elkhart General Hospital.
Both bodies are at the Culp Funeral Home here.
The driver of the auto and four passengers were all thrown out of the vehicle as it turned over after the collision and two women remain confined today at Elkhart General Hospital. They are Mrs. Edith Mathews, 20, Cassopolis, Mich., wife of Henry Mathews, 26, the driver of the car, and Mrs. Raymond Bryant, 19, Mokena, Ill. Also, thrown out of the car but not injured were a young Mathews child and infant Raymond Bryant. Neither of the injured women was seriously hurt.
FOLLOWED BY FATHER.
The former Goshen youths were killed as they were en
route to a field to get some haying equipment. Vincent's father was
following them in his truck when the crash occurred.
Mr. Vincent said that the boys were headed north on the
Calvin Center Road and were attempting a left turn into a lane leading to
the hay field when they saw Mathews' approaching
auto.
The Vincent boy apparently saw the approaching auto over the crest of a hill and attempted to turn back into the right side of the road when the cycle was struck by the auto. Mathews told investigating Michigan authorities that the cycle was in the center of the road when he first saw it and that he applied the brakes of his 1955 Chevrolet. The auto, authorities said, skidded 100 feet before the impact with the motorcycle. The boys were thrown into the air and the auto overturned, coming to rest on its wheels. The motorcycle was thrown into the ditch. The motorcycle, valued at $200 was demolished and damage to the auto was place at $1,000.
BORN IN GOSHEN
Leslie, born in Goshen July 13, 1939, would have been a
junior at Elkhart High School this fall. The Vincent youth, born here Nov.
15, 1939, would have been a senior at EHS in September.
