GOSHEN -- Marjorie Mae Lalonde, 70, of 503 N. Sixth St., died at 11 a.m. Friday (June 8, 2001) in her home.

Mrs. Lalonde was born in Flora, Ind., on May 1, 1931, the daughter of Eldo and Ruby (Largen) Clawson.

She is survived by one daughter, Angela Lalonde of Goshen; a son, Raymond Bates of Michigan; one stepson, Zeke Bates of Edwardsburg; a stepdaughter, Laura Jean of Elkhart; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Vera Yeater of Logansport, Mrs. Max (Fay) Logston of Oxford and Ethel Ehernman of Warsaw; and two brothers, Ralph Clawson of New Paris and Kenneth Clawson Sr. of Goshen.

Friends will be received two hours before the service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home. The Rev. Billy J. Lamb will officiate and burial will follow at Hess Cemetery.

Mrs. Lalonde was a homemaker and a member of Goshen Pentecostal House of Prayer.

Memorials may be given to the family.

VERA LAMBERT

Mrs. Vera Lambert, 75, of 22561 CR 104 E., Rt. 5, died at 8:45 p.m. Friday in Elkhart General Hospital. She had been ill three months. She was born Dec. 14, 1900 in Huntington, and was married to John L. Kurtz, who died in April, 1929. On April 9, 1943, she married Melvin R. Lambert, who died July 15, 1945. Surviving are a son, Orville, Union; three daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Rosie) Hunter and Mrs. Charles (Esther) Shook, both of Elkhart, and Mrs. Carl (Geraldine) Hooley, Farmington, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, two half sisters, and two half brothers, all from out of state. A son, Lawrence, died Oct. 18, 1976, in Union.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the White Funeral Home where services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Reverends Verle Hoffman and Noah Hochstetler, pastor and former pastor of the Roseland Mennonite Church, of which she was a member, will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery.

MRS. AUGUSTA LAMBKA

Mrs. Augusta Lambka, 78, wife of Christ Lambka, died at 8 o'clock this morning at their home on Pleasant Plain avenue south of Hively avenue. She had been bedfast two weeks, ill from complications.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hieden, Mrs. Lambka was born in Germany, April 5, 1858. Fifty-four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Lambka came to America and direct to Elkhart.

Surviving beside the husband are the following children: Mrs. Lon Mowery of Los Angeles, Mrs. Harry Swartz of Elkhart, Mrs. Edwin Sohm of Cleveland and Fred Lambka, who also lives on Pleasant Plain avenue. There are six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. William Drier of Chicago.

Mrs. Lambka was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church.

CHRIST LAMBKA
(From the Elkhart Truth, Aug. 6, 1940, p. 2)

Christ Lambka, 85, who came to Elkhart from his native Germany 58 years ago, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Harry and Gertrude Swartz, 1106 Princeton boulevard. Two weeks ago today, while seated on a bench in the rear yard of the Swartz home, he suffered an apoplectic stroke and was noticed lying unconscious by a neighbor. Later the stricken man regained consciousness, but remained helpless and unable to talk.

The deceased, who was born in Mechlenburg on Sept. 26, 1854, the son of John and Christine (Timn) Lambka, was married to Augusta Heiden in 1879, and three years later they came to America and direct to Elkhart. Mr. Lambka worked the Lake Shore boiler shop until 25 years ago, then bought a farm on the Pleasant Plain road. Since the death of Mrs. Lambka, May 2, 1936, he had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Swartz. Surviving are four children - Mrs. Swartz and Fred Lambka of Elkhart, Mrs. Lon (Carrie) Mowery of Los Angeles and Mrs. Ed (Elizabeth) Sohm of Cleveland, O.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The body has been returned from the Charles Walley mortuary to the Swartz home, where the service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, with burial in Grace Lawn. The services will be in charge of the Rev. P. Hubert Konrad of the St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church, of which Mr. Lambka was a member.

FRED G. LAMBKA
(From the Elkhart Truth, Feb. 17, 1958)

Fred G. Lambka, 75, of 3212 Pleasant Plain, an exhibitor of prize poultry, died of a heart attack at 8 a.m. today.

He was stricken while helping to set up a display of his fancy birds, which were to have been shown at the First National bank this week. The city ambulance was called to the bank, but Mr. Lambka was pronounced dead when it arrived at General Hospital.

He retired in 1956 after 23 years employment at the Elkhart Packing Co. Years ago, he worked at the New York Central roundhouse. Collection Totals 700

Mr. Lambka started raising show bantams when he was five years old. Over the past 70 years he developed his banty strain to "show" quality. His collection numbers about 700.

His sons, Bill and Jim, under his tutelage have also developed some fine specimens. Mrs. Lambka's specialty is parakeets and canaries. She has more than 100.

Lambka first entered his fancy bantams in poultry shows in 1908. Since that time, he and his sons have accumulated over 1,000 ribbons from shows all over the United States. At a recent show in Indianapolis, he entered 15 birds and won 12 awards. The high point of his showmanship came in 1948 when he won the "Best Display" award at Madison Square garden.

He was born Nov. 30, 1882, in Elkhart, where he married Mildred Smee in 1823.

Survivors
Survivors include his wife, two sons, Jim and Bill, both of Elkhart; a daughter, Mrs. George Kimble, Elkhart; three grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Harry Swartz, Elkhart, and Mrs. Lon Mowery, Los Angeles. Friends may call at the Walley Funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Prairie Street cemetery. Other arrangements are incomplete.

CONRAD L. LANDGREAVER

C.L. Landgraver Dies Suddenly - Dead body found on floor of outbuilding near home. - Left home in morning and failed to return- deceased had been Prominent Citizen of County.

Conrad L. Landgreaver, one of the best known citizens of Elkhart county, died very suddenly today at his home at the corner of Purl and Seventh Sts.

Mr. Landgreaver was troubled with Bright's disease, but had not been seriously ill at any time. This morning he went to his barn to hitch up to go out to his farm. When he did not return home at noon, Mrs. Landgreaver began to search for him, but not until about 2:00 did they find his dead body on the floor of the chickencoop near the barn. He had been dead several hours. His death is attributed to organic heart trouble.

The deceased was born in Germany Oct. 6, 1845, and came to America when a child. He located in Elkhart county many years ago and has been one of the most influential citizens of the county. He entered politics and due to his popularity and sterling worth was twice elected to the office of county auditor.

Mr. Landgreaver is survived by his wife and 5 children, Percy of Chicago, Allen, Grace, Mary and Harriet of Goshen; two brothers George of Logan County, Ohio and Henry of Youngstown and a sister, Mrs. H.L. Wean of Goshen. 

Deceased was an Odd Fellow and a member of the First Reformed church. (1911 Feb 11)

J.E. LEEDY
"A Bullet for Dessert"

Kansas City, April 24. A young man, supposed to be J. Edwin Libby (J.E. Leedy), of New Paris, Ind. entered a restaurant in this city Thursday, and after eating his dinner shot himself through the head, inflicting a mortal wound.

MRS. CATHERINE LEIGHTY
Grim Reaper - Casts his blight in Goshen and vicinity locations

Mrs. Catherine Leighty, aged nearly 68 years, died Friday afternoon at 4:10 o'clock at the home of her sister, Mrs. C. A. Barry, 212 Plymouth Ave. After an illness of over a year. She had been ailing since a year ago Thanksgiving, but the immediate cause of death was a stroke of paralysis she suffered between 2 and 4:00 Thursday morning. She leaves 3 sister, Mrs. Barry, Mrs. Hiram Butts, living eat of New Paris and Mrs. Molly Metzler of Chicago, also two brothers in Ohio.
The funeral will be held Monday forenoon from the Evangelical church in New Paris. Those wishing to attend from here take the 9:30 Winona car. Interment will be in the cemetery east of Syracuse, beside her husband and daughter, the late Mrs. Lewis Whitehead.

HENRY F. LOEHR

Loehr, Henry F., born in Stark County, Ohio, May 27, 1834, died at his home in Milford, Ind. Oct. 11, 1911, aged 77 years, 4 months and 15 days. He was married to Zilpha A. North June 23, 1859. To this union were born 6 children, 4 of whom survive. He and his wife untied the the Church of the Brethren more than 50 years ago, and continued faithful until death. Services at the Bethel Church in Milford. Interment in the Leesburg cemetery.

LOUISA (HORN) LONG

Mrs. Louisa Long, 92, mother of Albert Long of Elkhart, died at 8:35 this morning at the home of her son, George Long, in Millersburg.

Mrs. Long was the widow of John Long who died 34 years ago. She had lived in Millersburg 62 years. She is survived by three sons and two daughters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Reformed Church, Millersburg.

WILLIAM LONG
Goshen Daily News Times
September 11, 1931

William Long, 75 years old, died yesterday, September 10, 1931, at his home, two miles northeast of Benton, after a lingering illness which followed a stroke of paralysis eleven weeks ago. He was born in Hicksville, Ohio, January 14, 1856 and came to Indiana at the age of ten years. He has lived in the vicinity of Benton since that time. Surviving are his wife, Sophia, three sons, Arthur Long of Goshen, Chauncey Long of Foreman, N.D., and William Long of Benton, two daughters, Mrs. Jesse (Dessie) Hostetler of LaGrange and Miss Jennie Long at home. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Methodist Church in Benton. Burial will be made in the Lutheran Cemetery.

(research indicates that William was not born in Hicksville, Defiance Co., OH, but rather in Ashland Co., OH)

JOHN LONG

Approx. August 30, 1907

John Long died at his home in Millersburg Monday (August 26, 1907) after an illness dating back one year ago, when he suffered a stroke of apoplexy which left him a physical wreck and last week he suffered a third stroke and died several days afterward.

Deceased was born in Ashland County, Ohio, May 26, 1856; died Aug 26, 1907; aged 51 years, 3 months and 20 days. He came to Indiana with his parents in 1866 and located in Benton township. Ten years later he moved to Millersburg where he resided with his mother since the death of his father in 1893. Mr. Long and his mother took into their home Ethel Botts when she was an infant and has since lived with hem. Mr. Long was generous and indulgent with his charge and as considerate for her welfare as an own father could be. She held him in high esteem and feels that in his death she has lost a true friend.

Besides his mother and foster daughter he leaves four brothers-William, George, Albert and Henry, and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Sine) Ecker(t), Mrs. E. W. (Mary) Long, Mrs. James I. (Emma) Gangwer, and Mrs. L. L. (Leona) Rogers. Mrs. John (Sarah) Thomas is dead.

The funeral was held in the Christian church yesterday at 10 o'clock, Rev. I. L. Berkey officiating. Burial in Brown's cemetery.

GEORGE LONG
Elkhart Truth
February 27, 1941

George Long, 77, retired New York Central section foreman, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 1941, at his home in Millersburg. He had been ill four years of heart trouble.

Born in Hicksville, Ohio on August 14, 1863 Mr. Long was taken to Millersburg when 3 years old by his parents, John and Eliza (Louisa) Long (nee Horn). He had made that community his home since then.

Mr. Long was employed by the New York Central for 48 years prior to his retirement a few years ago. On October 15, 1887 he was married to Kate Brakes in Millersburg. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias until the Millersburg lodge disbanded a few years ago.

Surviving are his widow, a son Ray Long, a daughter Fay Long, both of Millersburg, 2 grandchildren, a brother, Albert Long of Elkhart and a sister, Mrs. Ona (Leona) Rogers of Watervliet, Michigan.

The body will be taken this forenoon from the Stiver Funeral Home at Goshen to the Long home in Millersburg where friends will be received until the hour of the service. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Millersburg Reformed Church. The Rev. R. A. Wrothman will officiate. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery.

HENRY LONG

Henry Long died at Longcliff Asylum in Logansport Friday evening from pneumonia after a short illness. He had been a patient in the institution about 2 years. His brother, George and wife went to Logansport Saturday after the remains, returning Sunday evening.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning at the Christian church. Interment in Brown's cemetery. The N.Y.C. section men were a day off to attend the funeral, out of respect to George and Albert Long who had been in the employee of the company for many ears.

Henry Long, son of John and Louisa Long, was born in Elkhart Co., Ind., May 10, 1872 departed this life January 21, 1916, age 43 years 8 months and 11 day.

He was one of a family of ten children. His father three sisters and one brother preceding him to the spirit land. He leaves an aged mother three brothers George and William of Millersburg and Albert of Elkhart, two sisters Mrs Sina Eckhart of Ligonier and Mrs. Leona Rogers of Watervliet Mich. to mourn his loss together with a host of friends.

GEORGE E. LOWER
Millersburg Echo, March 7. 1947

George E. Lower 74, died last Saturday evening at the LaGrange county hospital of an intestinal obstruction. He was born Dec. 28, 1872, in Noble county, Ind., the son of Josiah and Annabelle Lower.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. William Spotts of Goshen, a grandson, Lurther Lower, and a granddaughter. Mr. Lower and his grandson bought a farm south of Plato to which they moved Feb. 28, 1942, from Elkhart county. He was a former resident of Clinton township.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Silver Street Mennonite church with Rev. Allen Yoder, retired minister of the Silver Street church officiating. Burial was in the Rock Run cemetery.

WILLIAM L. LUNG
GOSHEN NEWS, SEPTEMBER 9, 1982

William L. Lung, 56, 114 S. 27th St., died at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday in the emergency room at Goshen General Hospital where he was transported by aidmen. Mr. Lung suffered an apparent heart attack while working on a ladder at his home.

A native and lifetime resident of Goshen he was born Jan. 24, 1926, and was married Feb. 9, 1963, in Syracuse, to Marlene L. Mock. He had last been employed with Shasta Industries, was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sue Leatherman, Odessa, Fla., and Diana Lung, Goshen; five sons, Robert, Patrick and William Jr., all of Goshen, Douglas, Cabincreek, W. Virginia and Rick, Diasetta, Texas; five grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Robert ( Elizabeth L. ) Lung, Long Lake, Mich., and a sister, Phyllis Davidhizar, White Pigeon, Mich.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9p.m. Friday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home where services will be held Saturday. The Rev. Louis H. Showers, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery with members of the V. F. W. conducting military graveside services.
