SARAH ANN RENSBERGER-HESS

Gospel Messenger, Feb. 25, 1922 - In Memory of our Departed Sister Hess
Sarah Ann Hess, nee Rensberger, was born Sept. 6, 1861, near St. Paul, Minn. She moved to Kosciusko County, Ind. With her parents, Brother Wm. And Sister Rachel Holsinger Rensberger, at the age of 3 years. Coming from Holsinger and Rensberger parentage (which families were always prominently affiliated with the Church of the Brethren), she was raised in the Bethany congregation and received into that church by baptism at the age of 18.

Jan. 1, 1888, she was united in marriage to Henry B. Hess. Earl in their married life they settled in Goshen, Ind. Where with a handful of other members, they started a mission. It grew rapidly and by hard labor they obtained a new churchhouse about 6 years later.

In 1897, a Sisters' Aid Society was organized, of which she was a charter member. In 1901 she became its President and served as such 4 years. A number of years later she again became President, and after serving several more years, was finally relieved because of ill health. Later she became Treasurer of the same organization and was holding this office at the time God called her home. She was a constant teacher in the Sunday school - her younger years being divided between a class of young ladies and classes of boys in the intermediate dept. During her later years she was interested in all the activities of the church, and always found time to visit the sick and aged. During sorrow and death in the church or community, she could always be relied upon for sympathy and service. Such loyalty to her church will cause her to be sorely missed. She was also a constant attendant at prayer meeting and a member of such classes as teacher training and special Bible study, holding several diplomas for these studies.

During the last 5 years of her life she was a patient sufferer from diabetes. July 4, 1921, she received a sever shock through the tragic shock of her son-in-law, Frederick Phend, who resided at her home. This, together with her constantly failing health, hastened the few remaining days of Sister Hess. She died 2 ½ weeks later, July 21, 1921, leaving her husband, 2 sons, 1 daughter, and 2 grandchildren. Burial at Baintertown cemetery.

GEORGE W. HISSONG
Gone to Rest
George W. Hissong, Soldier of the Union, Answers Roll Call Beyond

(From The Standard, LaGrange, Indiana, April 6, 1923. Printed obituary contains photo)

The death last Sunday of George W. Hissong, for many years a highly esteemed citizen of LaGrange, has occasioned much sorrow to his many old friends. For many weeks he had been suffering great pain and death was a merciful release, but his passing has taken from the town a long-familiar figure.

Mr. Hissong was born in Richland county, Ohio, March 9, 1840, the eldest son of Martin and Elizabeth Hissong. When he was a small child the family moved to Elkhart county, and later his home was Warsaw, where he enlisted in May, 1861, in Company E of the Fourth Indiana cavalry. He was on active duty with his command for three years, until the close of the war, receiving his honorable discharge June 29, 1865.

Mr. Hissong came to LaGrange in January, 1866, and lived here continuously from that date. He was married January 21, 1866, to Mary Jane Cline. Two children were born to them, Charlie M. Hissong, of LaGrange and Mrs. Lulu M. Teeter of Elkhart.

After Mr. Hissong came to LaGrange, he was associated for many years with Moon and Company, carriage makers. Later he was for nearly twenty years the photographer at LaGrange, with a business extending over a wide territory, and more recently, up to the time of the failure of his health, he was the justice of the peace.

Early in life he joined the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a faithful member. For many years, also, he was one of the leading members of the Grand Army of the Republic.

There survive him, besides the widow and children, two sisters, Mrs. Mary J. Warren of Elkhart, Mrs. Harriet A. Windbigler of Plymouth, a half-sister, Mrs. Alice J. Wolgamott of VanNuys, California, four grandchildren, K.A. Teeter of LaGrange, Michel and Naomi Teeter of Elkhart, Ethel L. Olds of LaGrange, and one great grandchild, William C. Olds.

Mr. Hissong died about two o'clock Sunday afternoon, April 1, aged eighty-three years and twenty-two days.

The funeral services were conducted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Hissong at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, by Rev. G. F. Hubbartt and the burial was made at Greenwood cemetery.

He was a gallant solder of the Union and a good citizen, always true to the best interests of his community and the nation. May he rest in peace.

JACOB HISSONG
I have been told that Jacob Hissong died Sept 18, 1900 and was buried on Sept 19. However, the obit says funeral on Thursday. In 1900, I think that Thursday was on the 20th. In 1901, I think Thursday was on the 19th. So...I can't tell you exactly what year he died. Same problem for Mrs. Hissong (below). I was told she died March 14, 1904 and was buried on the 16th. But, 16th of March in 1904 was, I think, on Wednesday and the obit says she was buried on Friday.
