Nappanee- John Dausman, 71, of 68547 S.R.19, died at 4:35 pm Monday (Feb. 1977) in his home. He had been ill since May 1976 with cancer. He was born Oct. 20, 1905, in Union twp., and in 1938 he married Gleta Frederick in Angola, In. She survives with 2 daughters, Mrs. Michael (Karen) Geyer, Nappanee, and Mrs. Judy Miller, Goshen, 3 grandchildren, a brother, Charles, Mishawaka and 2 sisters, Mrs. George (Pearl) Huitema, Nokomis, Florida, and Mrs. Harve (Ruth) Frederick, Nappanee. Two brothers proceeded him in death. Friends may call after 2 pm today in the Leinhart Funeral Home, Wakarusa, where services will be at 10:30 am Wednesday. The Rev. E. Paul Weaver, Union Center Church of the Brethren, of which he was a member will officiate. Burial will be in the Union Center Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church or to the Elkhart Co. Cancer Society. Mr. Dausman was a farmer, and had retired from Bendix Corp. in 1970.

MRS. LURA DAY
June 7, 1953
Mrs. Lura Day, 76, formerly of Elkhart, died Saturday afternoon at a hospital in
Fort Wayne.
She was a dressmaker in Elkhart for 30 years, moving to Fort Wayne 12 years ago to reside with a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Dold.
She was born in Bristol, Feb. 1, 1882. Her first husband, George Urmey, died in 1926. She married Charles Day in 1930. He died in Elkhart in 1951.
Also Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Harlan A. Replogle and Mrs. Clarence Kelley, both of Elkhart; a son, David Weirich, of Elkhart; a sister, Mrs. Fred Meyers, of Elkhart; eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
She was a member of the Central Christian church, Niles.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Hartzler-Gutermuth Funeral home. The Rev. Ernest Thompson, pastor of Elkhart Central Christian church, will be in charge. Burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.

PEDESTRIAN FATALLY HURT BY AUTOMOBILE
Arthur DeWitt St., 45, Rt. 4, was fatally injured early today when he was struck by a car while he was crossing West Franklin Street at Nappanee Street on foot.
The driver of the car was James E. Thompson, 30, of 610 Wagner Ave. He was not held.
DeWitt was taken in the city ambulance to General Hospital but a doctor there pronounced him dead on arrival. DeWitt suffered crushing injuries to his skull and fractures of both legs.
Carried by Car
DeWitt was struck by the right front fender of the car, police said. He was found lying beside the road 108 feet from where he was hit, but Thompson indicated DeWitt may have been carried most of that distance on the car, according to the police report.
Thompson said he was driving toward Elkhart when a man suddenly ran in front of his car. He said he was unable to swerve his car or apply his brakes before the auto struck DeWitt.
Thompson said he ran back to find DeWitt after he had stopped his car, but the man wasn't near the point of impact. He found DeWitt near his car when he returned to it. He then called to some people who were coming out of the Hump Restaurant across the street to summon an ambulance.
Shoes Knocked Off
Police said DeWitt was lying 6 feet in back of the car and 11 feet south of the pavement. His shoes which had been knocked off his feet were lying near him but further off the road. His hat was found 6 feet from where he was hit.
DeWitt had gotten out of a taxicab only minutes before he was hit. Dwight Smead, a cab driver who lives on Rt. 4, said he had picked DeWitt up at a Main Street restaurant and taken him to the Franklin-Nappanee intersection, leaving him there just after midnight. Police received the accident call at 12:13 a.m.
Thompson told police he was returning from a dance at South Bend. The right headlight of his car was broken and the fender was damaged by the impact.
Born in Huntington
Mr. DeWitt had been employed for 25 years by Samuel Winer and Co. He was born March 4, 1903 in Huntington, Ind., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry DeWitt. Survivors include a son, Arthur Jr., of Elkhart; a sister, two half-sisters and three half-brothers.
Friends may call at the Walley Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held there at 1 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.

MRS. ARMINA DEWITT

Mrs. Armina Dewitt, 58, wife of Henry Dewitt, whose home is in Lake Shore Park, died at 6:30 Saturday night. Death was caused by pneumonia. However, Mrs. Dewitt had been in declining health for several months.
Her body was taken to the home of a niece, Mrs. Sylvester Baldwin, 1011 Pearl Street, where the funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday. The Rev. Estel E. Perry of the Church of God will conduct the services and burial will take place in Rice Cemetery. It was Mrs. Dewitt's wish that her funeral be held at the home of the niece.
Mrs. Dewitt, who was the daughter of Samuel and Christina Heckman, was born in Huntington, Indiana on August 2, 1868. Her marriage to Mr. Dewitt took place on August 21, 1886. The family came here 20 years ago.
Surviving Mrs. Dewitt in addition to her husband are a daughter, Mrs. Vera Kurtz of Lake Shore Park; a son Arthur who is at home; three grandchildren; a brother, Henry Heckman of Huntington, and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Espich of Huntington and Mrs. James Daly of Simpson, Indiana. Mr. and Mrs. Dewitt lost nine children in infancy.

HENRY LINCOLN DEWITT

Henry L. Dewitt, 83, died at 2 A.M. today at his home in the Lake Shore Park addition west of Elkhart. He had been in poor health a year and bedfast 4 weeks. He was born April 12, 1862, in Huntington County, the son of Elihu and Sarah Ann (Vance) Dewitt. His first wife, Armina Heckman, whom he married August 21, 1886, died December 18, 1926. In 1927 he married Dorothy Weaver, aged 15, who survives. Also surviving are 2 children by his first marriage, Mrs. Vera Lambert, at home and Arthur Dewitt, Elkhart; 5 children by his second marriage, Laura Louise Dewitt of Marion, Henry Jr., Goshen and Nicodemus, Alfred and Ada, Lagrange; 6 grandchildren; and a brother, Elmer, of Markle.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday at the White Funeral Home, 129 South Second, in charge of the Rev. J. G. Towriss of Bresee Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.

MRS. CAROLINE DUNN
February 17, 1938
Mrs. Caroline Dunn, 78, who became a resident of Elkhart 50 years ago, died at
8:30 Wednesday night at her home, 813 Monroe street. She had been bedfast since
last November, and was fatally stricken with apoplexy a week ago.
The funeral service will be held at the Meyer mortuary, 216 West High street, at 2 p.m. Saturday, in charge of the Rev. Lawrence S. Ashley of the Central Christian church. Burial will be in Grace Lawn cemetery. The body may be viewed at the mortuary after Friday noon until the hour of the service.
Mrs. Dunn, who was the daughter of George and Sarah (Miller) Witter, was born on a farm just west of South Bend, July 11, 1858. Her marriage to James A. Dunn took place March 18, 1880, and after spending the next six years on a Baugo township farm they moved to Elkhart. Their residence here was broken by a six-year stay in Bristol. Mr. Dunn died in Elkhart, in August, 1910.
Surviving Mrs. Dunn are three daughters, Elva J. Dunn, at the maternal home, and Mrs. William (Lura) Day and Mrs. Fred (Dorothy) Meyers, both of Elkhart; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two brothers, Harry and Martin Witter of South Bend.
