Poor Farm Cemetery Abstracts from Historical Notes on Dubois County, Indiana by George R. Wilson Volume 8 page 14 “The
Dubois County Poor Asylum, on the New Albany road was fully established
and started on its mission in June 1861, when Philip Steringer took
possession of the farm and awaited its inmates.”
Volume 8 page 483 “On September 4th 1881, the writer saw the burning ruins of the Dubois County Poor House, on the New Albany road in section 31 T3S R4W practically the center of the county. It was entirely destroyed Sunday afternoon between 4 and 5 o’clock. It is thought a female inmate set the house on fire. There were 28 inmates at the time, but no lives were lost. In the following spring a new frame home was erected in Madison Township, 1½ miles south of Ireland. On Saturday, September 22, 1881 the present poor farm was bought of Mrs. Wendolin Erny.” Volume 9 page 437 “On a hillside, near the edge of a grove about one-fourth of a mile south of the New Albany road in section thirty-one and about the center of Dubois County there are a score or more of graves, practically lost to all except a close observer. The remains are those of inmates of the old poor asylum that once stood nearby. The building was destroyed by fire.” |
