December 1, 1904The Women’s Home Missionary society of the High street M. E. church will be entertained at the home of Mrs. C.M. Kimbrough on East Washington street this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock.
A Christmas program will be given at the regular meeting of the Women’s Missionary society of the First Baptist church at the home of Mrs. W.F. Warner Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The hostesses will be Mesdames W.F. Warner,
H.D. Zapf and Robert Hamilton.Dr. Mayme Basset, of Chicago, is visiting E.W. Bailey and family, of South Council street.
Mrs. James Streeter entertained a number of friends, yesterday afternoon at her home at 216 West Washington street.
Mr. and Mrs. James Summers, of Normal City, entertained a number of young women friends at a 6 o’clock dinner last evening. The guests were Misses Agnes Monroe, Mary Keener, Carrie O. Paden, Mima Keener, Edith Taylor and Carrie LeFavour.
An enjoyable time is anticipated this evening in the Leyman hall when the local lodge of Pathfinders will give their annual ball.
Dr. Orville Spurgeon has returned from St. Louis, where he visited the fair.
G.E. Fox has returned home after visiting in Cincinnati.
F.E. Winchester is the guest of friends in Detroit.
G. Kirshner and family have returned from Zanesville, O., where they were the guests of friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Shaw have as their guest, their daughter, Mrs. Albert Katterjohn, of Cleveland.
Mrs. Arthur Weathera left yesterday for a visit with relatives at Indiana Harbor.
Anson Hoy returned yesterday from Union City, where he has been visiting for the past week.
Miss Della Harrington, of Elwood, who has been the guest of Miss Jane Ely, of Normal City, has returned home.
Dr. and Mrs. J.S. Coffman and daughter, Miss Ora, have returned from a short visit in Anderson.
The Euterpean club will meet for rehearsal in the Apollo club rooms on Thursday evening at 7:30 o’clock.
The Helpers society of the First Christian church will hold their regular monthly business meeting at the home of Mrs. D. L. Peck, 321 East Wysor street, Thursday afternoon. All the members are requested to bring a thimble as there is much work to be done.
At the home of G.W. Rowett, 313 Wheeling avenue, a pleasant family reunion was held last Sunday. Members of the Fallis family, one of the most prominent in Grant and Delaware counties, gathered to spend a day together. After a sumptuous dinner the afternoon was spent in music and conversation. Representatives of all the different branches of the family were present.
The Ladies Aid society of the First Presbyterian church will hold a meeting in the church parlors this afternoon and 3 o’clock. Mrs. Mary Spilker’s division will be in charge of the meeting.
Miss Helen Brown, of New Castle, has returned home after visiting Muncie friends.
The regular weekly dance given by Zuber-McCabe in the Shick hall was well attended Wednesday evening.
The regular monthly business meeting of the Ladies Aid society of the First Universalist church will be held in the church parlors

One of the most promising events of the week will be the dance given in the Commercial club hall Friday evening by the high school students.

Light refreshments were served during the evening. Miss Hattie Wheeler was pleasantly surprised Wednesday evening at her home on North Jefferson street in honor of her birthday anniversary. At a late hour a two-course luncheon was served. Miss Wheeler was the recipient of several nice presents. Those present were Misses Louise Summers, Medora Hopkins, Bonnie Hiatt, Hazel Snyder, Eva Helmich, Hetta Redding, Hazel Steltz, Hortense Yockey, Dora Addison, Alice Bingham, Lillian and Esther Tedrow, Ethel Davidson; Messrs. The Chrysanthemum club was entertained Thursday afternoon by Mrs. C.E. Adsit. A very interesting business meeting was first held and in the prize drawing Mrs. F. Newbold was winner. A sumptuous lunch was served to all. The remainder of the evening was spent in games. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. J. D. Uart, of North Monroe street.
The Paul Revere chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution met yesterday afternoon with Mrs. Julius Heinsohn, 406 East Jackson street. After the regular business the chapter listened to a masterly paper on "Territorial Expansion," by Mrs. Emma B. Goodwin.
George Young, of the high school, will visit friends in Indianapolis today.
Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Leyman will give a dance to their Assembly club and pupils Tuesday evening in their academy on North Mulberry street.
Clarence H. White, the famous photographic artist, has been a guest of Mr. J.M. Love's family for several days. White's pictures are among the most remarkable today in the world of photography, several of them having received prizes at The Hague, in Paris and leading eastern cities, especially Boston and New York, where he is well known.
Mrs. Lawrence Horn entertained a number of little girls in honor of her daughter, Ruth's tenth birthday, Saturday afternoon.The afternoon was spent in games. Refreshments were served. Miss Maud Hughel, of Alexandria, will visit friends near DeSoto the last of this week and Sunday.
The Ladies’ Bullock and Ward club of ten entertained their husbands at J. H. Sheller’s residence. Oysters were served. Mrs. Mae Thornburg received a fine rocker as a premium. The next regular meeting will be at Mrs. Mae Thornburg’s Thursday afternoon and will reorganize for another ten months.

CITY NEWS COLUMNMUNCIE BOY A MEMBER- Cameron Leatherman, a graduate of the ‘02 class of the Muncie high school, who is attending Indiana university is a member of the University Glee club, being the baritone soloist. The glee club usually makes two trips annually, one in the winter and one in the spring. The winter trip this year will be made in the central and northern part of the state, but it is not yet known whether Muncie will be included in the list of cities visited.
MAY LOSE ONE EYE- Thomas Doyle, 1110 Kirby avenue, had his one eye painfully and perhaps seriously injured while at work fixing a furnace for Lee Shaw yesterday. He was pounding a board when the knot flew out and hit him in the eye. A blood vessel in the eye ball was broken.
ORIENTAL PARTY GROWING- The Oriental party being organized by Dr. C.M. Carter is growing steadily. A number have decided recently to make the trip, while others have practically decided to go. Besides the trip through Egypt, Palestine, Turkey, Greece, etc., most or all of the party will return through Italy, Switzerland, France, the Rhine, England, etc. Experts pronounce it one of the most profitable and delightful trips possible to be planned. Miss L. Maude Port, of Denver, Colo., is the latest member of the party to book for the whole trip.

Some Social GossipPractically no social events are being given in Muncie at the present time. At this season of the year there is always a lull in the social whirl. The week before Thanksgiving a large number of parties and dances were given but since then few have been given. One of the principal reasons for the quiet is the fact that Christmas will soon be here and the holiday season of festivities will be on hand. For the holidays a large number of events are being planned. Many college students will be at home for a few days, friends will take advantage of the low rates to visit friends and relatives both in the city and country and in their honor the parties and dances will be given. Many of them will be in the nature of indoor pictures, bobsled parties, skating parties, marshmallow roasts, dances and other unique affairs. From New Years to Lent the social season will be a busy one.
At the present time there are few weddings. The young people are waiting for Christmas to be married. None is announced for this week but there will be several before the end of the year.
For this week some of the social events given will be: Monday, Women’s Club with Miss Fowler; Woman’s Athenaeum, Mrs.Bailey. Tuesday, Magazine club, Mrs. Fudge; Mary-Martha club, Mrs. Burtt; Twentieth Century club, Mrs. Dwyer. Wednesday,Tourist’s club, Miss Katherine Postma; Culture club, Mrs. Hurty; and Matinee Musicale, Baptist church.
Some of the events given last week were: Monday, entertainment of the Jolly Eleven club in the afternoon by Mrs. H. Grass; surprise for Mrs. Thomas Paxon at her home on East Thirteenth street in the evening; wedding of Miss Maud Story and Mr. Arthur H. Feris; Tuesday, entertainment of the Elks Afternoon Card club by Mrs. Adam Hartman; meeting of the Silent Sixteen club at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Wharton, on East Adams street; Higgins-Colgan wedding; informal dinner party by Mr. and Mrs. John W. Dragoo or Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Games and music were the features of the evening. Refreshments were served at a late hour. Mrs. C. B. Jackson went to Springport last evening to spend the week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Wagner.
The annual Christmas offering meeting of the Woman’s Missionary society of the High street M. E. church will be held in the church parlors this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. The money received is to be used in sending out new missionaries. A good program will be rendered after which a luncheon will be served. During the afternoon there will also be a reception for the members, which have been taken into the society within the last year.
Mr. and Mrs. James Busch entertained pleasantly Monday evening at an old-fashioned taffy pulling at their home east of Selma.Those present were Misses Ina and Goldie Randolph, Hazel Brighton, Joe, Jessie and India Duncan, Hattie Busch; Messrs. and Mesdames Ohler, Busch and G. W. Randolph and others.
The Young Woman’s Guild of the Grace Episcopal church will give their presentation of “Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch and Lovey Mary” this evening in the Wysor Grand Opera house. The cast has been rehearsing for some time and everything is in readiness for the play.
Members of the family of “Uncle Billy” Knott gave him a pleasant surprise at his home near Blountsville, Sunday, in honor of his seventieth birthday anniversary. A big dinner was served at noon and a general good time enjoyed all day. The guests were: Mrs.Emma Grice, Messrs. and Mesdames W. E. Knott, S. E. PLEASING RECITAL.
Miss Bernice Castello pleased her audience in the English Lutheran church with her recitation and musical selections last evening and gave one of the best entertainments of its kind here this season. Her program consisted of solo, “Robin North”. Italian waltz song, “Si Saran”; Pase; “How Jennie Escaped”; solo, “The Swallows”; “The Unwelcome Guest,” “The Song That Reached His Heart,” “Little Missouri” and “Damon and Pythias.”
Her rendition of “Little Missouri” and “The Song That Reached His Heart” were probably the best and showed her ability to give the lighter and sadder pieces. “Damon and Pythias” as also well received by the audience. The last two numbers of the program were given in costume.

Mrs. Roscoe Koerner, of Stearns, Ky., is the guest of her brother, Prof. Arthur L. Murray, and family, in Riverside.

The Woman’s Board of Missions of the First Christian church held a meeting at the home of Mrs. Kenny on South Franklin street Tuesday afternoon.
The annual Christmas offering meeting of the Woman’s Missionary society of the High Street M. E. church was held in the church parlors Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock.
The Ladies’ Aid society of the Methodist Protestant church will meet in the church parlor Thursday morning for an all-day session. A full attendance of members is desired.
The Ladies Aid of the First Baptist church will hold an all-day meeting Thursday in the lecture room, beginning at 9 o’clock. Each lady is asked to bring a lunch and come prepared to sew.
Miss Anna Hutton and Mr. Marmaduke W. Smith were united in marriage in the First Presbyterian manse Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. H. N. Wilson officiated. Both the bridal couple are of Muncie and will make there home in this city.
Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Busch have returned from Bowling Green, Ky., where they were called by the illness of their daughter, Miss Esther, who was with her sister, Miss Ethel, has been attending Potter college. Miss Esther has been suffering with typhoid fever and he condition was worse last evening.
The Woman’s Auxillary of Grace church will meet at the residence of Mrs. Perkins, 616 East Washington street, on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, when Dr. Berry will give a talk on “The History of Missions in Australia.” A cordial invitation is extended to all the ladies of the city interested in the work of missions.
The Crystal club met at the home of Mrs. Rosina Moore, South Elm street, Tuesday afternoon. In the drawing contest Mrs. C. O. Howell won the prize,
and in the fortune-telling contest Mrs. A. G. Hanley won the first honors. After the business of the club was over the remainder of the afternoon was spent in games and a social good time. The next meeting will be with Mrs. Larmore, 421 East Seventh street.The Tuesday Afternoon Needle club met Dec. 4 at the home of Mrs. Dan Rogers, South Beacon street. A very pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by all. After all business, a three-course lunch was served. Mrs. Jennie Bockout, of 914 South Penn street, will entertain Dec. 20. The club is composed of the following ladies: Eliza Ridge, Emma Moles, Lillian Touhey, Edna Giltner, Rosa Dowden, Eva Hoy, Katie McLaughlin, Myrtle Hubbard, Minnie Ingersoll, Anna Rodgers, Ella Smith, Jennie Bockout, Emma Strang and Maggie Maule.
At the home of Mrs. Margaret Tom, in Westside, a dinner was given in honor of her fifty-seventh birthday anniversary yesterday.Music and recitations were enjoyed during the afternoon. Those present were: Messrs. and Mesdames Will Bibson and family, James Cummins, J. C. Leonard, D. T. Williamson, David Van Matre, Mart Van Matre and daughter, Leroy Hawkins, Amos Tom, Henry Matthews, Charles Harrison, Thomas Hiatt, Mrs. Bertha Johnson, Mrs. Laura White, Charles Leonard, Kenneth Kenner, Samuel and Gus Tom.
The Woman’s Missionary society of the First Presbyterian church will meet Thursday afternoon from 2:30 o’clock until 4 o’clock. The following excellent program will be given: Violin solo, Miss Jennie Jay, Mrs. Birt Summers, accompanist; Christmas readings from “Ben Hur,” (a) “Christ is Born,” Mrs. Wildman; (b) “The Wise Men Find the Child,” Mrs. Daly; “Missions in the Land that Gave Our Savior Birth,” Mrs. James A. Daly; vocal solo, Mrs. Burkholder; “The First Christmas Tree” (Book Review), Mrs. L. A. Mavity; roll call, Christmas bells. The hostesses will be Misses Charlotte Bishop, Bertha Bennett, Florence Ream, Esther Keller, Helen Garner and Reba Richey. All the ladies of the congregation are cordially invited.
A party was given by Miss Maggie Minnich and Miss Sallie Price at the beautiful country home of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Price, five miles north of the city. Contests and games were the features of the evening. KERN-WHITE
The wedding of Miss Marie White and Mr. Henry Kern was solemnized Monday evening at the home of the bride’s sister, Mrs. Albert Mockridge, 2006 South Jefferson street. The wedding was a quiet one and was attended by only a few of the near relatives. A supper was served after the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Kern will reside at 2006 South Jefferson street.
CLARK-HELM
Miss Floe E. Helm and Mr. G. W. Clark were united in marriage Sunday evening at 4:30 o’clock in the M. E. parsonage in Gaston by the Rev. G. W. Green. The only attendants were Maude Shoemaker, of Muncie, and Mr. James Smith, of Summitville. After the services a dainty wedding supper was served at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Helm.
