Historical Notes: The Yorktown Cemetery is listed as two: Yorktown Old is on the north end of the cemetery and the other Yorktown Cemetery is on the south end. The reason for the division of the cemetery is not clear - except that the old section was actually in the back of a big family home. That family buried there and allowed the poor to bury there. Many burials in the old section are not recorded because, at that time, it wasn't required by law to record burials on private property. Eventually the city acquired the cemetery and the remaining land and started to bury on the next section. Mt. Pleasant Twp., SEC 22, Elm St. in Yorktown, 6 miles west of Muncie |
