Courtney, Harold Rex
Of Elnora entered the army at Ft. Attebury on December 26, 1944 and was honorably discharged at Camp Beale (California) on December 2, 1946. During his active duty he was in the South Pacific theater and was involved in the Battle of the Southern Phillipines in 1945. His unit was a part of the 241st Signal Service Battalion which landed on the Japanese mainland during the final invasion which ended the war. During this period his unit was involved with surrender activities and the disarming of enemy individuals in both Japan and in Taikyu, Korea. A letter to the Washington Herald dated November 17, 1945 details his work in Korea in disarming Japanese soldiers and returning them to Japan. He was with the 10th Army of Occupation following the end of the war and was stationed in Korea for the remainder of his active duty. His citations during the service included the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Phillipine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Army of Occupation Medal. He was a Marksman M-1 Rifle qualifier and was discharged at the rank of Technical Corporal. Following his military service, he returned to Daviess County and lived out his life near the place of his birth. He died on March 12, 1998 and was given a full military funeral at Fairview Cemetery in Elnora. He was the oldest of three Courtney brothers from Elnora who served in the U.S. Army, his parents being Ralph Courtney ( a WW I veteran) and Laura Mae (Taylor) Courtney.

Shortly after Pearl Harbor, he volunteered for the Army Air Force, Aviation Cadets, but did not receive the qualifying exams until June 1942 and was sworn in July 15, 1942. He trained as a pilot for a year, then trained and served for more than a year on a combat crew as a B-17 Flying Fortress radio operator/gunner and then was assigned to a combat crew on a B-29 Super-Fortress. After the war ended, he was assigned as a Personal Affairs Consultant in a Separation Center, March Field, California counseling Air Force Personnel that were being discharged. He was discharged at Fort McArthur, California on February 23, 1946.
