John R. McMullen. (Thanks to Diane Knight), His father was Herbert F. McMullen. His mother was Elva M. Watt. Both are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Washington, Daviess Co., IN, as follows: Herbert F. 1879-1923 (Bur. June 8) Section L Elva M. 1880-1948 (Bur. Apr. 24) Section L John R. McMullen was b. 12 Jul 1916 in Washington, Daviess Co., IN, and d. 22 May 1990. His last residence was in Hamilton, OH. He was a member of the U. S. Army Air Force. In December 1943, he was an aviation cadet, Class of 44-D, 309th Flying Training Detachment, Missouri Institute of Aeronautics, Harvey Parks Airport, Sikeston, MO. Rex Wallace Morgan,Graduate of Plainville High School in 1940. An Army veteran, he served in the Pacific and was stationed in the Philippines in August of 1945. He then was a part of the clean up effort in Japan after the subsequent dropping of the bombs. Rex Wallace Morgan was the son of Herman and Hazel Morgan who were long time residents of Plainville IN. He married Irma Morris after the war and had five children: Michael, Dennis, Marsha, Marilyn, and Sheryl. Rex was a barber by trade. He operated barber shops in Bellville and Monrovia IN. Regrettably, Rex died in 1969 at the age of 47 of lung cancer presumably caused by the radioactive fallout in Japan after the atomic bombs were dropped. He is buried in Tucson AZ. James Andrew Mahan,He was an Assistant Driver on an M-18 tank destroyer in the Battle of the Bulge. They had a mission to support a withdrawal of another force, but ran into very strong resistance. Arthur William Bishop,. He was born in Washington, IN. on December 16,1906. His parents were Dora Cornelius and Ernest Bishop. He joined the Navy long before WWII and later served in a reserve position. He was called back to the Navy in November, 1942. He spent most of the war years in Casablanca, Africa. He served as a "chief" in charge of transportation. He drove those, with high rank, in a Navy vehicle. He was a wonderful father. Arthur died in 1965. (Donated by his loving daughter, Pat McKown

Charles W. Lashley (known as Joe to his friends and family) was inducted into the service at Fort Benjamin Harrison April 1, 1941. He left the US Dec 31, 1943 for foreign service and died February 3, 1944 at Oahu, Territory of Hawaii in the line of duty. He was a member of the 151st Infantry Regiment and was a technician 4th grade. His home address was Rt. 2, Montgomery. His parents were Charles and Ava Lashley. Herman Edward White was born in Washington,IN 02/15/1924 to Lucille Eve Hubbard,and Nathan White. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW-II for the intire war. He enlisted in Indianapolis, went to Basic Training in Great Lakes,ILL.He served from Dec.11,1941 until 13 Oct, 1945. His home of record on entry into the military was 809 E. main street,Washington,Indiana. During his service he served on the USS Laramie,and on the USS Lackawanna. Herman White received an honorable discharge.

Harold Rex Courtney of Elnora entered the army at Ft. Attebury on December 26, 1944 and was honorably discharged at Camp Beale (California) on December 2, 1946. During his active duty he was in the South Pacific theater and was involved in the Battle of the Southern Phillipines in 1945. His unit was a part of the 241st Signal Service Battalion which landed on the Japanese mainland during the final invasion which ended the war. During this period his unit was involved with surrender activities and the disarming of enemy individuals in both Japan and in Taikyu, Korea. A letter to the Washington Herald dated November 17, 1945 details his work in Korea in disarming Japanese soldiers and returning them to Japan. He was with the 10th Army of Occupation following the end of the war and was stationed in Korea for the remainder of his active duty. His citations during the service included the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Phillipine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Army of Occupation Medal. He was a Marksman M-1 Rifle qualifier and was discharged at the rank of Technical Corporal. Following his military service, he returned to Daviess County and lived out his life near the place of his birth. He died on March 12, 1998 and was given a full military funeral at Fairview Cemetery in Elnora. He was the oldest of three Courtney brothers from Elnora who served in the U.S. Army, his parents being Ralph Courtney ( a WW I veteran) and Laura Mae (Taylor) Courtney.

Robert Joseph Day,served with the 363rd Infantry, Company D and/or the 276th Infantry Company H. He returned to Washington after the war and was killed in an automobile accident during the mid-1950s. -- Submitted by: Lucinda Menkhus, St. Charles, MO.

S-Sgt Robert L. Yeager, son of William B. Yeager and Eldene Norris of 707 Northwest First Street, Washington Indiana- Served as a ball turret gunner on a B-24 ,completed 32 missions. He had been stationed in Italy with the15th air force, 724 squadron, 451 bomber group. "Bob", holds the air medal with two oak leaf clusters. He recieved a presidential citation. He recieved four bronze stars, and the ETO ribbon.

William Dean Yeager SOM2c, son of William B. Yeager and Eldene Norris of 707 Northwest First Street, Washington Indiana. "Bill" was a petty officer serving as a soundsman on the destroyer,USS R.K. Huntington. He had been part of Admiral Halseys 3rd fleet until being attached to the 5th fleet.

Harold Eugene "Gene" Yeager, SM2 US Navy, son of William B. Yeager and Eldene Norris lived at 707 NW 1st St., Washington In.He enlisted in the US Navy while a senior in high school. He served from July 1945 to July 1946,assigned to US NAV, Banana River, Fla. (Donated by Steve Yeager swyeager@yahoo.com )

Wilbur Burris was a Navy career Veteran. Wilbur is a PEARL HARBOR SURVIVOR and saw extensive action during WORLD WAR II. HE was also involved in the KOREAN CONFLICT.



Harold L. Dillon
S/Sgt. Harold l. Dillon, 15101347, residing at 1210 East Van treese Street, Washington, Indiana, enlisted in the Army Air Force shortly after Pear Harbor on March 30, 1942. He was trained as an aircraft technician and then became an engineer/gunner of a B-17 Flying Fortress, a heavy bomber. He was sent overseas and flew his missions with the 351 Bomb Group, 508 Bomb Squadron, 1st Air Division that was stationed in Polebrook, England. His B-17 was shot down on the crew's second mission, a raid to bomb the heavily defended Buna and Leuna synthetic oil plants located at Merseburg, Germany. The Fortress was set on fire by heavy flak and exploded in midair killing the pilot, co-pilot, and navigator. However, Harold and the rest of the crew were able to bail out. He was captured by the Germans and became a prisoner of war confined in Dulag Luft, Oberusal, Germany, Stalag Luft IV, Grostychow, Poland, and Stalag Luft I, Barth, Germany. He was awarded the American Theater Medal, the EAME Theater Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Air Medal, POW Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal. He was discharged on October 31, 1945.

Sgt. Carrol F. Dillon
Sgt. Carrol F. Dillor, 15303606, 1210 E. Van Treese Street, Washington, Indiana was attending Indiana University at the time of Pearl Harbor. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, he volunteered for the Army Air Force, Aviation Cadets, but did not receive the qualifying exams until June 1942 and was sworn in July 15, 1942. Because of the extensive recruiting program and the overzealous recruiting by the AAF, he was not called into active duty until February 21, 1943. He trained as a pilot for a year, then trained and served for more than a year on a combat crew as a B-17 Flying Fortress radio operator/gunner and then was assigned to a combat crew on a B-29 Super-Fortress. After the war ended, he was assigned as a Personal Affairs Consultant in a Separation Center, March Field, California counseling Air Force Personnel that were being discharged. He was discharged at Fort McArthur, California on February 23, 1946.
