Thomas Wirts Sr.

Thomas William Wirts Sr., 76, Washington, died at 5:09 a.m. Wednesday
        at Memorial Hospital, Jasper.
        Born Aug. 5, 1932, in Daviess County, he was the son of Ruby Everett
        and Adeline May (Gharst) Wirts. A 1950 graduate of Washington High School
        and a 1955 graduate of Indiana University, he served in the Army Reserves,
        retiring as a captain. He worked in the family business, The Bell Clothing
        Store, from 1957, after his father’s death, until it closed. He was a
        school bus driver for 10 years and worked at Carnegie Public Library
        for nine years. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Washington
        Rotary Club, Elks Lodge and Daviess County Chamber of Commerce. He was
        a member of the Elks Bowling League for several years. Survivors include
        his wife, Barbara Jean (Haynes) Wirts, whom he married Aug. 15, 1953;
        two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and John Buckley of Greenwood and
        Susan Scott of Washington; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas W. II
        and Kelly Wirts of Washington; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren;
        one sister and brother-in-law, Gretchen and Ron Brittian of Burlington,
        Colo., and one brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Mary Jane Wirts of
        Washington. A private family service will be held, with Adeline Buckley
        officiating. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Gill Chapel.
