Harry C. Wampler

Funeral services for Harry C. Wampler, 73, former Washington High School principal, will be held at 1:30PM Sunday in the First Christian Church. The Rev. A.B. Clarke will officiate and burial will be in the Gosport, Indiana cemetery. Friends may call at the Gill chapel after 5PM today until noon, Sunday, when the casket will be taken to the church. The Masons will hold services at the funeral home at 7:30PM today. Mr. Wampler died unexpectedly at 12:30AM Friday at the Park View Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, where he had gone last week-end. He retired in 1959 as principal at WHS, a post he had held since 1937, following the death of A.O. Fulkerson. As a teacher and later as an administrator, Mr. Wampler was a conscientious and dedicated man. He was well liked by pupils and by his associates, and he offered kindly guidance to hundreds of young men and women. School men over the state respected his ability and placed him in responsible positions in many organizations. A former athlete and also a former football official, Mr. Wampler was deeply interested in the athletic program and it was significant that under his administration the school rose to some of its greatest heights of achievement. Mr. Wampler took part in many educational activities throughout the state and nation. Among some of his honors were North Central Sate Committee, IHSAA Council, Athletic Board of Control, President and vice-president of Indiana Secondary Principals Association, President, vice-president and treasurer of SIAC, First Committee on use of Evaluative Criteria, High School College Cooperative Committee, Activities Committee and Executive Committee of Indiana Secondary Principals Association, National President of Beta Club, Senator of Beta Club, State Committee of Revision of Vocational Agriculture and Who's Who in Mid West Education. Mr. Wampler was born in Gosport, Ind., August 12, 1891. He attended Purdue University and received his BS Degree from Illinois University in 1923. He began teaching vocational agriculture at the local high school the same year. In 1936, Mr. Wampler received his master's degree from Indiana State. On Oct. 20, 1923, he was married to Ione Cassady, of Spencer. They have one child, Dr. John M. Wampler, MD, of Nashville, and two grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Lucille W. Davis and a brother, Donald C. Wampler, both of Indianapolis. Mr. Wampler was a member of First Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge, and a former member of Kiwanis
