LOOGOOTEE — Mary Edith (Matthewson) Walker, 86, was peacefully delivered
to her heavenly Father at 10:15 p.m. Saturday while surrounded by her
loving family. Born Dec. 21, 1922, in Daviess County, she was the daughter
of Cecil and Inez (Spaulding) Matthewson. She graduated from Montgomery
High School in 1941 and St. Vincent School of Nursing in 1944. Upon completion
of her nursing degree, she worked for Daviess County Hospital and later
went to work for Dr. Robert E. Chattin of Loogootee. Upon his retirement
she finished her nursing career in Montgomery as the Barr-Reeve school
nurse, retiring in 1989. She was a member of St. John’s Church, Daughters
of Isabella, Retired Nurses Association and St. Vincent’s Alumni. Mary
Edith was devoted to her faith, family and friends. She loved cooking,
especially around the holiday season, and was known for her cookies,
peanut brittle and fruit cake. But with all her culinary skills, divinity
was never mastered. Mary Edith enjoyed playing cards, dice and listening
to the 1940’s Big Band-era music. She is survived by her son, Richard
D. Taylor and his companion, Mary “Susie” Chanley; granddaughter, Stephanie
(Taylor) Trambaugh; grandson, Jonathon Taylor and his wife Candy; and
great-grandchildren, Brayton and Olivia Taylor, all of Loogootee. Her
second husband, William A. Walker, precedes her in death, along with
younger siblings Joseph and Dan Matthewson and Ida Mae (Matthewson) Healy.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. A Mass of
Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter’s
Church in Montgomery. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visitation
will begin with a wake service at 4 p.m. Wednesday and continue until
8 p.m. at Brocksmith Funeral Home in Loogootee. Preferred memorials are
to the Barr-Reeve Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 25, Montgomery, IN
47558, in memory of Mary Edith (Matthewson) Walker or St. John’s Catholic
Church in Loogootee.
