LAS CRUCES, N.M. — E. Brayton Smoot, 77, died July 23. Born Jan. 19, 1932, in Washington, he was the son of E. Brayton and Christine (Kinney) Smoot. He earned a Master’s degree from Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Mo., and a Juris Doctorate in Law from Indiana University. He established his career as a lawyer in 1970, and in 1972 established his own practice. He served as a public defender in Daviess County from 1972 through 1974. He was elected to the office of prosecutor in 1974 and served as the Daviess County Prosecutor from 1974 through 1982. He continued his private practice from 1982 until his retirement in 1999. He had a deep interest in reading in all subject areas and enjoyed classical music and photography. He is survived by his wife, June Casey Smoot of Las Cruces, whom he married June 27, 1959; children, Julie M. Smoot of Orlando, Fla., Kathleen A. Smoot of Campbell, Calif., and Dr. James Smoot and daughter-in-law, Dr. Laura Smoot of Davis, Calif.; grandchildren, Steven E. Jones, Kimberley A. Smoot of Las Cruces and Gianna Smoot of Davis, Calif.; and daughter-in-law, Sally L. Smoot of Las Cruces. He is preceded in death by his parents, E. Brayton and Christine Smoot; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Evelyn Casey, and his son, Brayton E. Smoot. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 315 N.E. Third St., Washington, with Father Leo Kiesel as celebrant.
