Hilda McAtee

McALESTER, Okla. — Hilda McAtee, 88, died Thursday at McAlester Regional
Health Center. Born May 25, 1920, in Blaine, Ohio, she was the daughter
of Peter and Sophia (Gombos) Soltesz. She grew up in West Virginia. In
1942, Hilda was the first female in West Virginia to join the U.S. Marine
Corp. She served her country during World War II and on Nov. 30, 1946,
married John Thomas McAtee. They lived around the world throughout their
62 years of marriage. She was a member of the Federation of Women’s Clubs
and the Republican Women’s Club. She had a volunteer spirit and wherever
her family lived, she served her church and community. She was a member
of St. John the Evangelist Church, McAlester. She is survived by her
husband, Lt. Col. John T. McAtee (USA ret.); sons, John M. McAtee and
wife Michelle of Gulf Breeze, Fla., Stephen T. McAtee of New Smyrna Beach,
Fla., and Mark G. McAtee and wife Janet of Boise, Idaho; daughter, Margaret
White and husband Douglas of McAlester; five grandchildren, Jessica McAtee
of Pensacola, Fla., Lisa Smith of Gulf Breeze, Gregory McAtee of Boise,
Idaho, and D.J. and Sarah White of McAlester; brothers and sisters, Isabell
Stathas and husband Nicholas of Camp Hill, Pa., Rudolph Soltesz and wife
Charlene of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Louis Soltesz of Wheeling, W.V., and
Rosemary Hamilton of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews
and other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents;
Peter and Sophia Soltesz; brothers, Frank and Paul Soltesz; sister, Emma
Cufaro; and sister-in-law, Judy Soltesz. A memorial Mass was at 10 a.m.,
Monday at St. John the Evangelist Church, McAlester, with Rev. Leonard
Higgins celebrant. The internment will be held at Arlington National
Cemetery, Washington D.C. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Chaney Harkins
Funeral Home, McAlester.
