John J. Essig, 82, Washington, died at 10:27 a.m. Saturday at Daviess Community Hospital. Born Dec. 12, 1923, in Washington, he was the son of John C. and Elizabeth (Clements) Essig. A graduate of Washington Catholic High School, he was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II and received many war metals. He was a member of St. Simon Catholic Church, Washington American Legion and Washington Knights of Columbus and was a stamp and coin collector and amateur magician. His wife, Dorothy (Schnarr) Essig, whom he married May 23, 1950, survives. Also surviving are a son, Mike Essig of Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, Rosemary Billings of Washington; and two grandchildren, Drew Essig and Kristen Essig of Cincinnati. Two brothers, Paul Essig and Richard Essig, and one sister, Imogene Essig, are deceased. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Simon Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Johns Cemetery. The Washington American Legion and VFW will conducted a military graveside rite. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ed Lee Mortuary with a wake service at 4 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to Washington Catholic Education Endowment.
