DeMotte Rites Held Wednesday
Odon Doctor Laid to Rest After Almost Half Century of Service. Funeral
Services for Dr. Jerome DeMotte were held at the First Christian church
in this city Wednesday afternoon. Rev. E. Roberts had charge of the
services and was assisted by the Rev. C. H. Buchanan and Rev. R. J.
Crider. Interment was made at the Walnut Hill cemetery. Dr. DeMotte,
past 76 years of age, was a widely known physician, and had been practicing
in this city and community for nearly 50 years. He passed away November
5th after an extended illness. He was president of the First National
bank at Odon, a charter member of the Odon Lions club, and a member
of the Daviess-Martin Medical Society. Born in Pike county January
29, 1869, Dr. DeMotte was the son of Albert and Elizabeth (Anderson)
DeMotte. His maternal grandparents came from Kentucky to Dubois county,
Ind., in 1816 and entered a tract of 300 acres of land. His paternal
grandparents also came from Kentucky and settled on a farm where Dr.
DeMotte was born. After receiving a common school education, Dr. DeMotte
attended the Mitchell Normal in 1880, and was a student at the Princeton
Normal, graduating in 1891. He taught school for three years, then
in 1892, entered the University of Michigan, remaining there until
1895. He spent a year at the Ohio Medical college, from which he was
graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He began the practice
of medicine in Odon in 1896. On October 10, 1899, Dr. DeMotte married
Olive Vest of Barr township, and to this union three children were
born. Mrs. DeMotte died January 5, 1941. The children are Commander
Russell DeMotte, now in the South Pacific, and before entering service
a physician at Bloomington; Mrs. Pauline Smith of Kokomo, and Calvin

this one also adds: Dr. DeMotte was married a second time, on March
2, 1944, to Mrs. Ethel Baker, who survives. He also leaves five grandchildren
and one brother Elnis (sic), of Velpen. Dr. DeMotte was a member of
the Cumberland Presbyterian church at New Lebanon.
