James A. Colbert
JAS. A. COLBERT TAKEN BY DEATH LATE THURSDAY
Heart Attack Proves Fatal to Well Known Business Man.
James A. Colbert, 73 widely known Washington business man, died at 4:15
o'clock Thursday afternoon of a heart attack, suffered at the family
home, 108 West Main street.
On June 4, 1940, he lost his eyesight due to a clot of blood settling
on the optic nerve, and had been blind since that time. However, he was
able to continue his business of real estate management and insurance
until a short time ago. From the first of the year he has been confined
to his home.
Born July 7, 1868, he was the son of John M. and Sarah Adeline (Gray)
Colbert. He was born and reared on the Colbert homestead in Washington
township and had resided in and around Washington his entire life. He
graduated from Washington high school in 1890, taught school a few years,
was employed by the Cabel & Kauffman Store from 1896, until he took up
the real estate and insurance business in 1919.
Mr. Colbert served on the city council when Robert Russell was mayor.
He was director of the Union Savings and Loan Assn. for several years.
On Sept. 17, 1891 he was united in marriage to Maggie M. Boone and the
golden wedding was celebrated last september. To this union five children
were born, who survive with the widow. The children are Mrs. Walter B.
Wallace, Mrs. John O. Jackman, Robert V. Colbert, all of Washington and
Mrs. James E. Allbright of collingswood, New Jersey and Clark B. Colbert,
Bloomington, Ind.
There are also nine grandchildren one brother Charles B. Colbert, and
on sister, Flora B. Cochrane, of Washington. Four other brothers and
sisters are deceased.
Mr. Colbert was a member of the K. of P. and the Modern Woodmen Lodges.
He was an Elder of the Church of Christ, and a very devout member.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 P.M. at the Church of Christ,
Corner East First and Hefron St. with Rev. Frank R. Smith officiating
and burial following in Oak Grove cemetery.
The body will remain at the Gill Funeral Home until that time, and friends
may call there to pay respects.
