Carl E. Brochin

Carl E. Brochin, 89, of Washington, passed away peacefully Monday at Daviess Community Hospital. Born April 6, 1919, in Washington, he was the son of Henry and Maude (Ulrich) Brochin. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church, was a member of the V.F.W. and a 60-year member of the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War II, a building contractor, an engineer with the Indiana State Highway Dept., and a musician. His musical career spanned more than five decades. He played most stringed instruments, but especially enjoyed playing the bass guitar. The last several years he volunteered his time playing music for local nursing homes. He also loved fishing with his wife Cleo and doing many woodworking projects for his family and friends. He began and ran St. Mary’s School lunch program as a volunteer for 12 years. Carl was a talented and amazing man who was loved and adored by his family. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by four children, Jerry Brochin and his wife Sofia of Lytle, Texas, Susie Paradis and her husband Gilles of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary Jean Kellams and her husband Brent of Winslow, and Joe Brochin and his wife Vicki of Stendal; two sisters, Ada Billings of Washington and Virginia McPike of Indiana; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. His wife, Cleo (Alford) Brochin, whom he married June 3, 1940, died July 3, 2007. Three brothers, Charles, Harold and Robert Brochin, and one sister, Norma Allen, are also deceased. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, with Rev. Gordon Mann as celebrant. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the American Legion and V.F.W. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ed Lee Mortuary, with a wake service at 4 p.m. Condolences made be made online at www.edleemortuary.com. (Jan. 12, 2009)
