JAMES W. ALLEN DIES FOLLOWING BRIEF ILLNESS--Aged Retired Farmer Will
be Buried Tuesday Morning.
James W. Allen, 87, retired farmer living at 1600 West Walnut Street,
died at midnight Saturday at the family home, death being attributed
to a two weeks' serious illness of old age infirmities. Native and lifelong
resident of Daviess County, the deceased was born December 4, 1852, a
son of Josiah and Susan (Cowell) Allen. He was a member of the Ebenezer
Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge of Glendale. He had been married twice.
Funeral services are to be held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the
Ebenezer Church with Rev. T.L. Rogers in charge, burial following in
the adjoining cemetery. The body will remain at the Williams Funeral
Home until the hour of the funeral, and friends may call there to pay
respects.
Mr. Allen's first marriage was to Eliza Johnson March 23, 1876, and she
died February 4, 1881. The second marriage was to Martha E. Brewer on
January 6, 1889, and she died November 27, 1938. Children of the first
marriage who survive are Oliver P. Morton Allen of Vincennes, and Mrs.
George Gregory of Reeve Township. Children by the second marriage are
Mrs. Glendora Robinson of Vincennes, Joshua Allen of Vincennes, Willard
M. Allen of Washington, Wm T. Allen of Greene county, Mrs. Jessie F.
Stover of Vincennes, and Mrs. Laura Ellen Groves of Vincennes. Step children
are Mrs. Amanda Allen and Mrs. Mary Crutchfield, both of Vincennes. There
are no brothers or sisters, but there are 27 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
NOTE: The mother of the deceased is Susan Caldwell.
