Albert P. Evans
Obituary in the Washington Herald, November 13, 1967.
Albert P. Evans, 87, 211 Front Street, died at the Crestview Nursing Home
in Vincennes (IN) at 4:40PM Saturday. He had been in failing health for
several years and seriously ill for one week. Born October 15, 1880, in
Mitchell, Indiana, he was the son of Elijah and Angeline (Hamer) Evans.
His wife, Ethel Bernadette (Robinson) Evans preceded him in death on August
6, 1958. Mr. Evans was a brakeman on the B.&O. Railroad and was a member
of the First Methodist Church, Eagles Lodge, and the Brotherhood of Railway
Trainmen. He was educated in the Mitchell (IN) schools. Surviving are two
daughters, Mrs. James (Pauline) Seidel, Washington; Mrs William (Mary
Catherine) McMullen, Vincennes; one son, Paul F. Evans, Evansville; seven
grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 11 step great-grandchildren.
One son, Robert G. Evans, and one step-daughter, Mrs Clara Wallace are
deceased. Funeral services will be held at the Gill Funeral Home with Dr.
Charles A. Tyler officiating and burial in the Mitchell (IN) Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home. The Eagles Lodge will hold services
at 7PM tonight.

Funeral Chapel with Dr. Charles A. Tyler officiating and burial in the

Mrs. Barzilla Slaven
obituary was in the Dec 15, 1922 edition of the Odon Journal (IN).
DIES OF HEART TROUBLE
Mrs. Barzilla Slaven aged resident of the community passed away at the home
of her son James a mile west of this city last Saturday, her death being due
to heart failure. She had been in fairly good health and when stricken passed
away very suddenly her death coming as quite a shock to her friends and
neighbors.
Barzilla Slaven was born in the state of Tennessee, Sep 4, 1850; and departed
this life Dec. 9, aged seventy two years.
Shortly after the close of the Civil War, she was united in marriage to
Jefferson Slaven and to this union nine children were born, two dying in
infancy, and one daughter, Emerine, passing on at the age of seventeen years.
This union was severed fifteen years ago when the husband and father answered
the final summons.
Mrs. Slaven united with the Baptist Church when she was seventeen years of
age, and when she moved to Indiana in 1913, she placed her membership with the
Christian Church at Newberry. She was faithful in the discharge of her duty
to her Lord as long as her health would permit, and as long as she could
attend the servicves of the Church.
She leaves to mourn her going, two sisters, Peggy and Ferbe, three sons
Absalom, James and Emanuel and two daughters, Tabitha and Elizabeth. She also
leaves forty-seven grandchildren, and thirty great grandchildren. She was a
kind and loving Mother, and will be cherished in the memories of all who knew
her.
The funeral service was held from the residence Monday afternoon at two
o'clock with Rev. R. T. Gwyn in charge. Burial was made at Walnut Hill
cemetery.

Sara Sears
AGED RESIDENT OF ODON FOUND DEAD IN HOME
Mrs. Sarah Sears, 81, Was Pioneer Resident of City. Odon lost a pioneer
resident, a woman who had long been active and highly regarded in this
community, in the death of Mrs. Sarah Sears at 1o'clock this morning.
Mrs. Sears was found dead in bed by a daughter. Aheart attack is believed
to have caused her death.
Although she was born at Freeman, Ind., Mrs. Sears had been a resident
of this community since she was two years old. She was 81 years and seven
months old at the time of her death.
She was born January 8, 1859, daughter of Eli and Elizabeth Walter
Kaiser. She was maried to Benjamin F. Sears October 10, 1875. Mr. Sears is
still living. She also leaves the following children:
Mrs. Carrie Longcar, Mrs. Lettie Courtney and Chase Sears, all of Odon;
Mrs. Lola Humerickhouse of Omer, Mich.; H.O. Sears of Terre Haute; S.P.
Sears of Laporte, 20 grandchildren and 25 great grand children.
Mrs. Sears was a member of the Odon Christian church and had been an
active worker in church affairs.
The time for the funeral has not been fixed but the services will be
held at the Odon Christan Churc in charge of the Rev. Mr. Fleshman, with
burial to follow in Walnut Hill cemetery, Odon. Hewett Poindexter & Sons
will have charge of the funeral.

WILLIAM A. GILLEY

WILLIAM A. GILLEY DIES FOLLOWING A LONG ILLNESS
William A. Gilley, well know Baltimore & Ohio railroad employee, died at
10:25 o'clock this morning following a serious illness of two weeks. Death
was due to diabetes, from which he had been suffering for fifteen months.
Death of Mr. Gilley came at the home of his son, Walter Gilley, at 814
McCormick avenue.
Mr. Gilley had been a employee of the B&O railroad for forty-two years.
Up to fifteen months ago he was working regularly but his illness forced him
to quit work. He was a yard engineer when he left the employment of the
railroad company.
Mr Gilley had been a lifelong resident of Daviess county, having been
born here September 30, 1863, the son of William H. H. & Margaret
(McCracken) Gilley.
On September 22, 1887 Mr. Gilley married Maude Wood & to this union
nine children were born, seven of whom survive besides his wife.
The children are: E.H. Gilley of Terre Haute; Mrs Otto Hamer of Princeton;
Walter, Lyndie, Helen & Mrs R.B. Fullerton: & Mrs. Prentice Barker. Eleven
grand children also survive.
Deceased was a member of the Baptist church & funeral services will be
conducted there. The time if the funeral has not been arranged.
Deceased was well known in Washington, having been of such a
disposition as to make friends with whomever he came in contact. He was
liked by his fellow workmen & was a conscientious & hard working man

DEBORAH COLBERT

DEBORAH COLBERT TAKEN BY DEATH AT HOME TODAY
Mrs. Deborah Colbert, 75, died at her home in South Washington at 5
o'clock this morning following a serious illness of about six months. Death
was due to a cancer of the head, for she had been suffering for about three
years. Mrs. Colbert's death was not unexpected as she had been critical for
some time.
Born in Daviess county May 14 1850, deceased had spent her entire life
in this county, the past several years in Washington.
February 20, 1870 she was united in marriage with John Colbert & to this
union six children were born, two of whom survive to mourn the passing of
their mother.
The children are: James Colbert of South Washington & Mrs Helen Longer
of Richmond Ind. There are no other near relatives. Twelve grand children &
one great grand child also survive. Mrs. Colbert was a member of the Church
of Christ & active in church affairs.
Funeral rites will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o;clock at the home
in South Washington with interment following in Oak Grove cemetery.
Mrs. Colbert was well known & liked by her friends & neighbors. She was
always ready to help another in time of need of illness through her other
friendly traits made friends with whomever she met. She is mourned by many
friends.
She was a member of the Pythian Sisters lodge.
She was the daughter of Jeremiah & Elita Edwards.
PHOEBE ARTHUR MEADE

MRS. MEADE DIES TODAY
Mrs. Phoebe Arthur Meade,.90, Troy Road, died. at 11:00 a m. today. at
the home of her daughter, Mrs. Donald Stuckey, RR.2, city. She had been
seriously ill for two months and in failing health for the past five years.
Mrs. Meade was born April 11, 1867, in Harrison township, the daughter
of James R. and Lettie Steen Arthur. On November 10, 1889, she married
James B. Meade, and he survives. She was A member of Union Presbyterian
Church in Harrison Township, and was educated In the Harrison- township
schools.
Surviving - besides the husband are three sons, John A. Meade of Missouri
Valley, Iowa; Elmer Meade, RR. 2, Montgomery, and Ira Meade, Mount Summit,
three daughters. Mrs. Owen (Alice) Fitzgerald and Mrs. Dewey (Martha) Davis,
both of RR.4, & Mrs. Donald (Maude) Stuckey, R.R.2,city. There are 11
grandchildren and l great-grandchildren.
Two sisters, Dr. Maude Arthur and -Martha R. Arthur, and a brother,
Austin Arthur, all of R. R. 4, City, also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Gill Chapel
with - burial in the Union cemetery in Harrison township.
Friends may call at the Gill Chapel I after noon Thursday.
CLARA ARTHUR

CLARA ARTHUR PASSES AWAY
Clara Belle Arthur, 86, RR#4 Harrison Township died Sunday at 11:50 a.m. in
the local hospital after a week's serious illness. Her health had been
failing several years.
Mrs Arthur was born in Knox Co, Ind Dec 24, 1866 the daughter of Jesse &
Susan (Johnson) Lett, coming to Daviess County when a small girl. She was a
member of the Baptist Church
On Sept 12, 1886 she married William Arthur & he passed away June 2, 1982.
To this union two children were born, Mrs Clyde (Ursula ) Wallace, died in
1947 & a son Henry Hamilton Arthur lives in Harrison Township.
She also leaves 10 grandchildren 14 great grand children & a sister, Mrs.
Carrie Armes.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Gill chapel with the
Rev Clyde Wake in charge. Burial will be in Bethel cemetery. Friends may
call at Gill's to pay their respects.

MRS. GEORGE KRAMER
DIED EARLY TODAY
Mrs. George (Theresa) Kramer, age 88 302 Dewey Avenue, city died at 7:35
a.m. today at the Myers Nursing Home. Cause of death was reported as
complications. She had been ill for the part five years.
Mrs Kramer was born in Jasper, Indiana, December 8, 1873, the daughter
of the late John & Amelia Deischenger Miller. She married George Kramer on
January 24, 1893, & he preceded her in death on June 22, 1950.
She was a member of the St. Marys Catholic church, charter member
Auxiliary Knights of St. John, St Mary's Altar Society & the Legion of Mary.
She came to this community in 1880 & was educated in Jasper & St. Marys
schools.
Two daughters, Mrs Harry (Mary) Bassler & Mrs.Barbara (Poolitsan)
Kramer, both of this city,survive. One son has processed her in death. There
are eight grandchildren & four great-grandchildren & four
great-great-grandchildren.
She was the last of her family. Funeral services will be held at 9:30
a.m. Monday at the St. Marys church with burial in the St. Johns Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Lee & York Funeral Home after 10:00 a.m.
Saturday. Ladies Auxiliary, Knights of St. John memorial services at 7:30
a.m. Sunday & the Altar Society will pray the Rosary.
CURTIS SIMS

Curtis C. Sims, 69, 407 S. Meridian St., Washington, died at Eastgate Manor
Nursing Home at 1: 10 a.m. Saturday. He had been ill since April of 1986
and was seriously ill three months.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2p.m. at the Ed Lee Mortuary v;with the Rev.
Jerry Jensen officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. today. The Elks Lodge
will hold memorial services at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and the
Masonic Lodge will hold graveside services at St. John's Cemetery Tuesday.
He was born June 6, 1918 at Terre Haute to the late Curtis C.Sims Sr.
and Vivian (Lankford) Sims who is surviving in Washington. He married
Mildred Miller Riester May 11, 1951 and she survives. He was a retired
employee of the Milwaukee Railroad and was freight agent at Elnora and Crane
for 10 years. He was reared in the Elnora community. He came to Washington
in 1951. He was a graduate of Elnora High school and attended Indiana
University. He was a member of the Elnora basketball team. He was active
in the Daviess County baseball teams and had a Professional tryout as a
first baseman with the St. Louis Cardinal baseball team. He was a member of
the Washington Bowling League and Considered as one of the city's better,
bowlers. He served four and one half years in the European Theatre in the
U.S. Army Signal Corps as a 1st Lieut. He was a member of Christ United
Methodist Church, Washington Elks lodge, Washington Masonic Lodge and
Evansville Scottish Rite.
Surviving are his wife ;and two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Neal
(Brada) Killion and Mabel Hastings, all of Washington, and Truman Sims
Jasonville. One stepson, Joseph Leo Riester, is deceased.

GEORGE KRAMER AT FAMILY HOME THURSDAY
George Kramer. 81, died at his home at 300 Dewey Avenue at 8:55 o'clock
Thursday evening. Mr. Kramer had been in failing health since January & his
condition became serious early this week.
In his death Washington lost a man with friends by the legion. Whoever
came in contact with George Kramer was his friend. He possessed with a
gentle disposition & congenial smile that established friendliness &
confidence with the first introduction.
Mr Kramer was widely known throughout the Midwest & nationally has a
bird dog trainer. He successfully trained dogs which won some of the biggest
& most outstanding field trials held in the country in the years past.
For years he conducted dog kennels on Dewey avenue & some of the
nation's outstanding men, with hunting as a hobby , had Mr. Kramer keep &
train their dogs
Mr kramer was a native of Sanbrucken, Germany & born February 18, 1869
the son of Jacob & Barbara (Sherer) Kramer Sr. He came to this country in
1883 after receiving his education in Germany. He was a member of St. Mary's
church & the Alter Society.
Survivors are his widow. Theresia Kramer who he married on January 24,
1893 & three children: Barbara A. Poolitian, Brooklyn N.Y. Mary E. Walter at
home & George Kramer, city. He leaves eight grand & twelve great
grand-children. Four brothers & a sister: Pete Kramer, Ranger Texas; Jacob
Kramer, New Albany; Charles Kramer, Bicknell; John Kramer, Lawrenceville
ILL, & a sister Mrs Barbara Bordenet, city.
Funeral services will be held at St Mary's church at 9 A.M. Tuesday.
Burial will be in St. John's cemetery.
The body will be at the Keller Mortuary until 2 o'clock Saturday when it
will be taken to the residence at 300 Dewey until hour of the funeral on
Tuesday

Mrs. Lillian C. Miller, 68, 411 Meredith 'St., died unexpectedly at the
Daviess County Hospital at 5:58 p.m,. Monday.
The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Simon's Church! with
interment in St. John's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Ed lee Mortuary after 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Legion
of Mary will hold memorial services at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
She was born 1915 at Washington to the late John A. Grannan and Thersia
Ginder Grannan of Washington. She married Clinton J. Miller Oct. 6, 1959
and he survives.
Miller was retired from Uniroyal and was a member of St. Simon's Church and
an Auxiliary
member of the legion of Mary.
Surviving besides her mother and husband are one son, John P (Jack) Grannan,
city; three stepsons, Robert and Paul Miller, both of Indianapolis, and
Carroll Miller, Fritchton; one stepdaughter, Shirley Miller, Indianapolis;
three grandchildren and ten step grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs.Robert
(Mary Agnes) Lindsay, Ozark, Ala. Three brothers, Carl, Roy V. and Cletus
J. are deceased.

26, DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS
Three Small Children Survive Well Known Woman
Mrs. Rosie Miller. aged 26 years, died last night following a serious
illness of four days, although she had been ill for the past to weeks.
Cause of Mrs Miller's death was given as acute endocarditis of
inflammation of the joints of the arms.
Mrs. Miller, Miss Rosie Belle Porter before her marriage was born in
Washington township October 28, 1901 the daughter of Silas & Ester (Sanders)
Porter. She spent her entire live in this county & was educated in the rural
schools.
May 14 1920 Miss Porter Married Joseph Miller who survives, to this
union three children were born, the last two weeks ago.
Mrs Miller was a member of the First Christian church. The father,
husband, three children Rosie Mary, Katherine Wauneta & Betty Almagene &
the following sisters survive; Emma Porter & Addie May Porter of Washington
township & Mrs Roy Courtney of Washington.

CLYDE ARTHUR
Clyde E. "Peanut" Arthur, 81,31014E 19th Street, died in the extended care
unit at the Daviess County Hospital Clyde Arthur Wednesday at 7:50 a.m. He
had been in failing health for two weeks.
The funeral will be at 10 am. Saturday at St. Marys Church. Interment will
be at St. Johns Cemetery. Fr. Ronald Zgunda will officiate.
Friends may call at the Ed Lee Mortuary from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.The K
of C will pray a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
He was born on Sept. 21, 1916 in Daviess County to Edgar and Leona
(Strickland) Arthur.They preceded him in death. He married Cordia C. Miller
on Feb. 23, 1935 and she survives.
Arthur was a coal miner until he suffered an injury. He then became a car
salesman and retired from the car business. He had lived in the community
for most of his life attending Longfellow Elementary and Washington High
School. He was a member of St Marys Church, Knights of Columbus, 50-year
Moose Lodge member and Eagles Lodge member.
Surviving are his children, Mona J. Small, Washington; Dean Arthur,
Greenwood and Eddie "Punk" Arthur, Panama City Beach, Fla. 14 grandchildren;
14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter and two sisters,
Virginia Goyer, Bicknell and Norma Lee Wetzel, Parker, Colo.
He was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren; a sister, Opal Wilson
and three brothers, Don, James and Charles.

EVANSVILLE - Leonal E. Colbert, 72, died at 5:45 a.m. on Thursday at the Deaconess Hospital, here.
Private services are pending. Burial will be in Evansville.
He was born on Dec. 22. 1914, in Daviess County to Asel and Margaret (Colbert) Colbert. He was a retired carpenter. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Winson (Diana Kay) Cox and two granddaughters, Kenansville, Fla., and a twin sister, Mrs. Leona E. Lewis and one brother, Fred D. Colbert, both of Washington. Three brothers are deceased

James A. Colbert Dies In Hospital
James A. (Shotgun) Colbert, 82 year-old retired B & O machinist died
Friday at 10:10 p.m. in the Daviess County Hospital. He had been in failing
health for five months & seriously ill for two weeks
The deceased was a member of the Church of Christ, the International
Association of Machinists, the Knights of Pythias & resided at 2201 South
Highway 57.
He was born in Daviess County April 8, 1881, the son of the late John &
Deborah (Edwards) Colbert. On July 20, 1910 he married Ettie J. Walters &
she preceded him in death on February 11, 1962.
Survivors are two sons & a daughter Arthur Colbert, Mrs Helen Bowers &
Walter Colbert all of this city. Six infant daughters & one son are
deceased.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the V.L. Poindexter
Chapel with burial in Bethel cemetery. Brother Paul Wallace will officiate.

TAKEN BY DEATH
Nellie Mae Campbell, 84, 2008 West Walnut passed away at her residence this
morning at 9 o'clock after a six-week illness.
Mrs. Campbell, a native of Indianapolis, moved here 55 years ago. She
married Loranzo L. Campbell on August 10, 1889 and he died April- 15,1949.
Surviving are five children, Ralph Campbell, and Mrs. Harold (Catherine)
Sargent, both of this city, Mrs. Luther (Irma) Wood, Veale Township. Rev
Loren Campbell, South Bond, Ind., and Bruce Campbell LaGuna Beach, Calif.
One son died in. infancy.
In addition she leaves 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two
brothers E. G. Hofer Newport Beach, Calif., and Otto Hofer, Indianapolis and
a sister Anne Caffee, of Terre Haute.
Mrs. Campbell was a member Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at, 2 p.m. in the Gill funeral home
With the Rev Eugene Brown in charge. Friends may call at the Gill chapel
after Tuesday noon.

TAKEN BY DEATH
Loranzo L. Campbell, 79 retired car foreman of the B&O railroad shops died
at his home at 2008 W. Walnut street at 1 o'clock this morning after an
illness of four weeks. Mr. Campbell had been in failing health for several
years.
Deceased was born in Dubois county on Oct. 21, 1869 & came to Daviess county
when a young man. He was educated in the Dubois county schools. He was
married Nellie Hofer on Aug. 10, 1899. Mr Campbell was a member of the
Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was a Veteran of the Spanish American
War, serving as a First Sergeant Company D 159th Regiment from April 26,
1898 until November 23rd of that year. He was stationed at Camp Mount,
Indiana. His parents were Parks & Elizabeth (Corn) Campbell.
Survivors are his widow & the following children: Ralph H.; city, Mrs
Catherine Sargent Michigan City; Mrs. Irma Wood Veale Township; Rev Loren
Campbell Indianapolis; Bruce Campbell LaGuno Beach Fla.; a son died in
infancy. There are 14 grand children & three brothers & two sisters Charles
& Claud Campbell city. Porter Campbell, Jasonville, Ind. Miss. Ora Campbell
& Mrs. Maude Gilley, city.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Gill
chapel with Rev. N. Fredick in charge. Burial will be in Oak Grove. Friends
may call at Gill's. The American Legion will hold graveside services.
