Mildred (Whetsell) Crane
Mildred Crane was a woman who loved life and traveling, even after she passed the century mark. Mrs. Crane was 102 years old when she died on Sunday, Aug. 16, at Heritage Nursing home Port Washington, where she had lived for seven years.
The 1996 family celebration at Heritage Nursing Home for her 100th birthday brought grandchildren and great-grandchildren from throughout the United States who had never met each other before.
Born in Washington, IN, on June 24, 1896, she was the daughter of Leonard and Fannie Bollenbacher Whetsell. She spent much of her life in Indiana and Connecticut.
She married Herman Thomas Crane and moved with him to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Where he was named the physical education director for the high school.
The couple raised their 2 daughters and 2 sons in the Michigan community where Mrs. Crane was a homemaker.
Mrs. Crane left Sault Ste. Marie after her husbands death in 1949. She cared for her mother in Washington, IN.
After her mother died at 103 years, Mrs. Crane divided her time between the homes of her daughters, Phyllis Moberg of Fredonia (WI) and Frances Viilo of Connecticut. The Viilos traveled frequently and Mrs. Crane accompanied them through- out the United States, Mrs. Moberg said.
Her hobbies were bridge, Scrabble, handiwork and listening to the radio, Mrs. Moberg said. However, failing eyesight and hearing reduced her ability to enjoy those pastimes.
At the time of her 100th birthday, members of the nursing home staff described Mrs. Crane as "a wonderful example of someone who ages gracefully.'
"She has an interest in life, in what people are doing and has developed ties with people who visit and relationships with the staff," a Heritage staff member said.
Private funeral services were held.
Internment was in the Sault Ste. Marie cemetery where her husband is buried.
Mrs. Crane is survived by her daughters, Phyllis (Guy) Moberg of Fredonia and Frances (Michael) Viilo of Connecticut, and her son Herman (Minamarie) Crane Jr. of Arizona.
She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, son Leonard and 2 brothers preceded here in death.

Elizabeth DeMotte
This obituary was included in a letter from Ella Hobbs to Dr. Jerome
DeMotte, Odon, Ind. The postmark is from Jasper, Ind. July 1, 1916. There is no indication of what newspaper.
After a long and patient illness of four months, Mrs. Elizabeth
DeMotte passed to her eternal reward Sunday evening, June 11, 1916, at
the home of her daughter, Mrs. Zeno Hobbs, near this place, where she
had made her home for several years. She was the wife of Albert DeMotte
(deceased) and they were the parents of five children--Mrs. Ella Hobbs,
Elvis and Sebastian DeMotte, who reside near Otwell, and Dr. Jerome
DeMotte, of Oden, Ind, and Mrs. Clara Clark (deceased) who was the wife
of Dr. Clark of Petersburg.
Deceased was the daughter of William and Jane Anderson and was born
on a farm southwest of Ireland, where she spent her girlhood days. She
was converted at a meeting at Old Shiloh and united with the Cumberland
Presbyterian church, and in which faith she lived and died. She was a
consistent christian, as was proved to everyone who knew her. She was a
true and loving wife and a kind and affectionate mother.
Aunt Elizabeth, as she was so familiarly called by all who knew
her, was a very patient sufferer, never complaining, but always
cheerful, always saying: "It won't be long and there will be no more
suffering," and would speak of joining her loved ones gone before, and
constantly prayed for those around her. At the time of her death she
was 79 years, 10 months and 28 days of age. She lived a clean spotless
life, and to know her was to love her, and although she is gone from us
her influence will continue to live.
The large number in attendance at her funeral and the many
beautiful floral tributes were proofs of the esteem in which she was
held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Zeno
Hobbs, and was in charge of Rev. H. M. Pattison, of Otwell, after which
the remains were laid to rest in the New Lebanon cemetery. Besides her
children she leaves fifteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one
brother (Alexander Anderson) who is now 86 years of age, and host of
friends.
