Mahlon Neal came to live in Lewis Township, Clay County, IN in 1838. He had several occupations during his lifetime. He was a miller, merchant, educator and farmer. Neal's Mill was built by Mahlon Neal in middle 1860s. It was used as a part of the Underground Railroad. In this part of Indiana the Underground Railroad used the Old New Albany as an escape route to Canada and freedom. After the Mill burned, it was rebuilt in 1873 by Mahlon, his two eldest sons, Albert and James B., and a nephew, Henry Z.
