JAMES STUART PLANTATION CEMETERY BURIALS
Charlestown Township, Clark County, Indiana

This cemetery is located on Stacy Road, Grant #92, at the mouth of Pleasant Run. This property was owned by Homer Stacy in 1947, when the following inscriptions were copied by B. C. Holmes.

"James Stuart and Rebecca Marchant Stuart once owned this plantation. They are more than likely buried on it. They were born and married in Virginia, migrated to Kentucky, then to Indiana. They willed the Plantation to their son Isaac Stuart.

"A check of the 1820 census of Clark County, Indiana, page 48, shows Abednego Richardson with one male 10-15, 2 males 26-44 (one of whom would be Abednego) and one female 10-15 and one female 26-44 (who would be the above-mentioned Sarah, who was born circa 1787. She was 33 years old in 1820 when the census was taken.

"James Stuart (Stewart) was a Revolutionary War soldier, who served as a private from Virginia. He was born June 8, 1743; died December 29, 1812. He was called James, Jr. He married Rebecca Marchant on June 1, 1765 in Berkley County, Virginia. Rebecca was born March 23, 1748 and died July 15, 1815.

Laura Stewart Civey <lauracivey@earthlink.net> reported in February of 2003:
The following was written by Cynthia Ann Stewart (1811-1860), wife of Dr. Samuel M. Osborne, granddaughter of James Stewart, Jr.  This taken from her diary:
Mr. Abednigo Richardson and his wife Sarah bought Grandfather James Stewart's farm and lived on it till they died; they came from Christian Co., Ky. had no children left the farm to an adopted son Richard Green, they were friends to my Mother in her trouble and to her I owe much for kinder people I never met.
