Ron Bumbalough <showboat@theremc.com> has provided the following information and index of States Cemetery:
States Cemetery is located on the corner of Michigan Road and New Market Road, approximately one mile west of the town of New Market. This places the cemetery inside of plot 213 instead of plot 230 as reflected on the county map. Click here for a topographical map of this site, courtesy of www.TopoZone.com.The Cemetery occupies the site of the old States Church. Portions of the original church foundation still remain visible today. The cemetery is maintained by the Cooper family who own the farm next to the cemetery.
The cemetery, which is still active, is located on a hill which overlooks the gentle rolling farmland that is indicative of this portion of Indiana.
To locate this cemetery, go North on SR 3 from Charlestown thru Otisco to New Market Road (approximately 10 miles from Charlestown). Turn right onto New Market Road and go about 2 miles to Michigan/Fry Road. The cemetery is located on the left.
When we visited States Cemetery on August 5, 2000, we found the grounds meticulously maintained.
For serious Clark County family historians, we
recommend the Hoosier Journal of Ancestry's "Clark
County Cemeteries" publication, a companion publication
of The Clark County Special.
This listing of 26 selected cemeteries in Clark County includes maps of the County and each township, directions to the various sites and row and grave numbers for the burials listed. The cemetery featured on this page is one of those included in this publication. The 139-page "Clark County Cemeteries" publication is available from the Hoosier Journal of Ancestry $12.00 plus shipping and handling. I've added an HTML order form to this website to make it easier for you to obtain a copy of this valuable resource. I have no financial interest in this publication and provide this information only to facilitate your pursuit of Clark County history. |
Adjacent stones of Burnie H. Tames and "wife of Samuel Tame" |
Burnie H. Tames |
"Wife of Samuel Tame" |
An excellent example of variant surname spellings, possibly within a generation. The stone of Burnie H. Tames (b. 8/29/1886, d. 9/10/1913) is adjacent to that of Alice Tame (no "s"), "wife of Samuel" (b. 11/30/1867, d. 12/28/1891). It's also interesting that Alice's given name is not as prominently displayed as that of her husband. I cannot attest as to the relationship between Alice and Burnie, but I suspect they are mother and son. |
The following listing should not be considered as a complete listing of individuals buried here, as a large number of graves are unmarked.
