A portion of Silver Creek Cemetery, taken 05/17/98 |
This cemetery is located at Silver
Creek Church on Brick Church Road between Sellersburg and Charlestown,
Indiana, in Charlestown Township. Click here for a
topographical
map of this site, courtesy of www.TopoZone.com.
This property is maintained by the Silver Creek Cemeterial Association and remains in use as of 1998. Silver Creek Church (pictured below) was established on November 22, 1798, chartered as a Baptist Church, the first Protestant Church in the Indiana Territory. According to the church's records, the first burial here was Frances McGuire's in 1805. Fascinating additional details on Silver Creek Church can be found in the 1885 Minutes and the 1886 Minutes of the Silver Creek Cemeterial Association, posted on the Clark County USGENWEB site. |
The 1986 Annual Meeting records
from the Minute Book of the Silver Creek Cemeterial Association report
that 135 graves from the old Worrall
Cemetery were moved from that location to the new "Worralls Burying
Ground" plot at Silver Creek Cemetery.
These people whose graves were relocated to Silver Creek Cemetery were members of the Worrall, McCoy and associated families who split from the old Silver Creek Church when the majority of the members chose to "leave the Baptist faith" and become an independent Christian congregation as a result of the Restoration Movement led by Alexander Campbell, Barton Stone and others in the late 1820s and early 1830s. |
Stony Point Christian Church in
1998,
|
For many years, the
Christian and the Baptist groups alternated their use of the old brick
church on Brick Church Road.
In 1858, the Christian congregation (which was the majority of the old church congregation) built a new house of worship a mile or so closer to Charlestown. Their new church is still an active congregation and is known as "Stony Point Christian Church". Stony Point does not maintain a cemetery and many members of this congregation have been buried at Silver Creek Cemetery. The Stony Point Christian Church congregation donated the old brick building (which was in very bad and unsafe condition) to their Baptist brethren (who had since moved to Charlestown). There was a stipulation in the deed that members of Stony Point would be permitted to bury their dead at Silver Creek. The Baptists demolished the old structure and constructed a new one in 1861 -- using the same brick again. That building still stands, though it is in use only one day of the year -- for the Annual Meeting of the Silver Creek Cemeterial Association, held on the afternoon of the Sunday after Mother's Day. Thus, the Stony Point building is two years older than the "old brick church" standing today at Silver Creek Cemetery. |
A bicentennial commemorative history of Stony Point Christian Church (formerly known as Silver Creek Baptist Church) was published in November of 1998. A limited number of copies are still available and the proceeds benefit the Stony Point Building Fund. |
Today, the old brick church building at Silver Creek Cemetery is owned by the Silver Creek Cemeterial Association, which will hold its 127th Annual Meeting there in May 2001.
The interior of the "Old Brick Church" is very stark. There are a little more than a dozen old wooden pews (donated by the congregation at nearby Pleasant Grove Methodist Church), a small platform at the head of the single room, a very old piano and a simple pulpit. Sitting in the old building, one can easily imagine the pioneer congregation, singing hymns and praying with their rifles at their sides, ever prepared in case of Indian attack.
There is no electricity or plumbing in the building and the windows were replaced a number of years ago with shutters to thwart vandals intent upon breaking the glass that was once there.
The walls have been covered with drywall and an acoustic-tile ceiling suspended from the old ceiling. A new roof was installed several years ago to protect the building.
This cemetery is maintained only through donations and the sale of burial lots. To donate to the Silver Creek Cemeterial Association or for information on purchasing a plot, please contact:

Marsha Drummond Smith <rms54549@tca.net> reports:I've been doing research for over 20 years now on James Drummond, Revolutionary War soldier and feel like I can help you with the Drummond? listed in your Silver Creek Cemetery index. As per "A Roster of Revolutionary Ancestors of the Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution", 1976 Vol. I, James Drummond b. Jan 17, 1764, d. Jul 19, 1843, is buried in the Silver Creek Cemetery. We found his wife, Nancy beside him when we visited with Mr. George Lynn Bell at the cemetery just a week ago. Nancy's information is listed as b. July 6, 1768, d. December 4, 1852.See also note below under DRUMMOND, Nancy.I've contacted the local American Legion to see if I can get him a military marker and have contacted a Charlestown monument company to get a new stone for Nancy. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Another family member lives in the Louisville, KY area - Kathleen Drummond. She and her brother, Robert, did extensive research in that area before I did.

Marsha Drummond Smith <rms54549@tca.net> also reported on 2/12/2000:A bronze marker for James Drummond (Rev. War) buried in Silver Creek Cemetery is in George Lynn Bell's possession, waiting for the spring thaw, when it will be installed at the cemetery. There is no way I can afford a $500 new marker for his wife, Nancy Drummond, to clear up her incorrect date of birth (1796). However, I'm convinced the date should be 1768, based on the following facts:
1. Vol. I, "A Roster of Revolutionary Ancestors of the Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution", Commemoration of the United States of America Bicentennial, July 4, 1976 by Mrs. Thomas Martin Egan, State Regent 1973-1976, page 182 states:
Drummond, James, Jr. b. 1764, Pa., d. 19 July 1843, Pa., m. Nancy Griffith, b. 6 July 1768, d. 4 Dec. 1852, Clark County, Indiana.2. "Central Pennsylvania Marriages 1700-1896" Compiled by Charles A. Fisher, Dallas, Texas library page 74 states:a. 1788 Drummond, James, Jr., Cumberland County, to Nancy Griffiths3. Their first son (my direct line), John b. 1788, married Rebecca Work in 8/31/1809.
b. SAR File Ref: #22116, CA. GED 16 Feb. 1998, states "Nancy Griffith, Birth 6 July 1768, Marr. 1786, Death 4 Dec 1852 - this information was obtained by William Doyle, Private Investigator Personal Security, P.O. Box 1094, Bella Vista, CA 96008-1094. He and I stumbled onto each other while doing our "Drummond" research.

These photos (L and R) are two views of the same stone -- a MATHES
monument. Vandals pulled the crown off the monument and it was found
out in the field beyond the wall.
The mid-section, meanwhile, teeters between the base and its perch leaning on the old dry-stack (unmortared) stone fence. It's only a matter of time before this stone too falls. |

McCOY See Worrall Cemetery for the names of the Worrall, McCoy and associated families now buried here that were moved from Worrall Cemetery to Silver Creek Cemetery, probably in the 1980s. These families were former members who split from Silver Creek Church when the majority of the members chose to "leave the Baptist faith" and become an independent Christian congregation as a result of the Restoration Movement led by Alexander Campbell, Barton Stone and others in the late 1820s and early 1830s.
