This large cemetery is located behind a field on the east side of Bethlehem-New Washington Road, 2 miles from Bethlehem on top of the hill that leads down to the town of Bethlehem (38.5518°N, 85.4431°W). Click here for a topographical map showing the location for Ross Cemetery (courtesy of www.topozone.com).
The earliest recorded burial here was in 1806.
I visited Ross Cemetery on October 19, 1997, on the way to the Autumn on the River Festival in Bethlehem. It is clean, well-mowed and appears carefully tended. Though I knew where the cemetery was located as I had seen it Saturday evening on my way home, I still accidentally passed it Sunday morning.
You will find Ross Cemetery sitting well back off the road, on the east side of Bethlehem-New Washington Road between where Taft Road and Vest Road intersect with B-NW Road from the west. There are cultivated fields between the cemetery and B-NW Road so, when the crops are high (such as mature corn), it may be difficult to spot from the road.
A Jeffersonville Evening News report found by Vicky Zuverink offered the following account on February 8, 1883:
"Double Funeral in Bethlehem TownshipPaul D. Shifflet provided me with a very thorough index of Ross Cemetery painstakingly prepared in 1985 by Vicky Zuverink (who has granted permission for its reproduction here), which is found below. Vicky's index was prepared by first comparing three pre-existing indexes, then making follow-up visits to the site and researching burial and death notices in area newspapers and in death certificates. Those newspapers included the Jeffersonville Evening News, Jeffersonville National Democrat, New Washington Courier and Charlestown Courier (the latter three all now being defunct)."A double funeral took place at the Ross grave yard on Tuesday, January 30, that of Mr. R. Dean, of Bethlehem and Mrs. Elizabeth Consley, mother of S. C. Consley, Esq., of Otto. She was raised and spent the greater part of her life in the vicinity of Otto. She has lived for some years with her youngest son in Jefferson county, at whose residence she died on the 28th of January. Her death was caused by measles. She was in her eighty-second year.
"Mr. Dean was comparatively a young man, his disease was consumption. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn thier loss. The cemetery where this unusual occurence took place is one of the oldest and most popular 'cities of the dead' in this part of the country. It is situated on the farm of J. W. Ross, and in former years was well known as the Kelly grave yard, as it was donated for this purpose by John Kelly, sr., the original owner of the farm, who with his wife and six children rests within its peaceful precincts. It contains the remains of some half dozen Union soldiers. Many years ago it was the scene of a triple funeral, all buried in one grave.* Many weary feet and aching hearts have turned from its gate that no rest peacefully under its waving evergreens."
NOTE FROM LOIS: The "triple funeral" would appear to be that for twins Sarah A. and Martha E. Matthews (age 4) who died on March 25 , 1848 and their sister, Mary (age 6), who died on March 26, 1848. (See index below.)
NOTE FROM PAUL SHIFFLET: "Some of these names are recorded as being interred at Ross Cemetery, even though their tombstones were not found. There is a section at the rear of the cemetery that is dedicated to the people buried there whose graves are unknown. Broken tombstones and pieces of tombstones are laid out here on a cement slab. The dedication on a marble slab reads:
This section is dedicated to those people buried in this cemetery whose graves are unknown.
This monument to the unknowns was donated, compliments of, Doug Deppe. My thanks to him."Vicky Zuverink given us permission to share the information from her work on this site. She has discovered information from various newspaper accounts and other sources on numerous unmarked burials at Ross Cemetery, which are indicated below. Vicky advises that her abstracts can be found in the following Southern Indiana Genealogical Society quarterlies:
