LAWRENC CEMETERY BURIALS
Washington Township, Clark County, Indiana

This cemetery is located 1½ mile south of New Washington on a farm in Washington Twp. Many years ago, this cemetery was reported as being "on Oscar Hutching's Farm". Luanne Stahly was able to locate this tiny cemetery, undisturbed but buried beneath a hill of Rose of Sharon vines, on the edge of a soybean field.

Luanne searched high and low before finding this little cemetery and she is undertaking to clear this site single-handedly. She's convinced there are more than just the two stones we were able to find when we visited.

The name on the stone below is W. Lawrenc (no "e" at the end). We hope to soon get better photographs of the two (possibly more) stones found here.

Correspondent Carol L. Vidales <larrance421@yahoo.com> reports that as follows regarding the LAWRENCE line in Clark County:

WILLIAM LAWRENCE, son of John and Ann Needham Lawrence, was born 30 Dec. 1764, presumably in Randolph Co. NC. Indiana Magazine of History, Vol. 35, p. 176 gives an abstract of William's will from Clark Co. Will Record Book 1817-33, p. 299. The will was dated 9 July 1822 and probated 15 July 1822. Heirs were daughters Polly Bower and Peggy Lawrence; rest of children (not named) had received their share. Executors were John Lawrence and Thomas Needham. Witnesses were John Reese, Elizabeth Bower, Alexander Walker. Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution buried in Indiana compiled by Mrs. Roscoe C. O'Byrne and published by the DAR in 1938 lists on page 231:

William's wife, Catherine, was probably the daughter of Moses Bland who was a neighbor of John and Ann Needham Lawrence. Moses Bland's will, dated 10 Dec. 1800, Randolph Co. NC lists the following children: Sally, Fanny, Winny, Peggy, Caty, Nancy, William, Benjamin. Moses' wife was Jean/Jane Wiggonton. It is possible that the son, William Bland, also went to Clark Co. IN. One William Bland was appointed administrator for the estate of Joseph Needham 25 May 1829 in Clark Co.

A marriage record has not yet been found for William and Catherine; however, they were probably married around 1786/7. In the 1790 census in Randolph Co. NC, William is head of household of four, presumably himself, wife and two children.

William made entry for a land grant in Randolph Co. 5 Dec. 1799, which was granted 20 Aug. 1802 totalling 84 acres. Also in 1799 William purchased 150 acres of land from his brother Peter. He inherited an additional 200 acres when his father John died in 1800.

I don't have the 1800 census for him, but in 1810 in Randolph Co. NC (the handwritten page # is 36--William's name is hard to read and was consequently misread and so doesn't appear in the census index) William is listed as follows:

In 1814 William sold 629 acres to his brother Jesse and 200 acres to his brother Edward. William does not appear on the 1815 Randolph Co. tax list, so we would assume that he left Randolph Co. NC for Clark Co. IN in 1814. He appears on 1820 Clark Co. IN census, p. 26:

Catherine Bland Lawrence had died 16 April 1816. (I believe I got this date from a descendant of Winnie Lawrence Needham.) William and Catherine's children were:

NANCY JANE LAWRENCE - 5 Nov. 1787 - 28 May 1839. She is buried in the Mozingo cemetery, Needham township, Johnson Co. IN. There is a bond in Randolph Co. NC dated 1 Jan. 1807 for her marriage to William Callicotte, 14 May 1788 - Dec 1870, son of Beverly and Priscilla Callicott. Nancy Jane and William had 6 children: Riley C. Callicotte - 1811-1883; Mary Callicotte - 1812, wife of Joel Mozingo; John Bailey Callicotte - 1818-1892; William Callicotte - c1825- ; Nancy Callicotte - wife of James Riley Span; Elizabeth Callicotte. Much of the Callicotte family history has been researched and published by John Truman Callicotte of Florida, a descendant of Nancy Jane and William. He did not initially believe that Nancy Jane was a daughter of William Lawrence, and indeed, there was another possibility because, according to Laura Scott Brett of Rushville, IN, her ancestor, John Scott- 1791-1857, married Jane/Jenny Lawrence (born 1792) in Clark Co. IN 17 May 1819. After careful consideration however, that possibility has been discounted. The available information strongly points to Nancy Jane Callicotte being the daughter of William Lawrence, although proof positive is lacking at this point. Nancy Jane's son, William Callicotte, was a hired hand for Thomas and Winnie Needham in Johnson Co. IN, Winnie being the sister of Nancy Jane and therefore Wm's. aunt.
WINNIE LAWRENCE - 23 March 1790 - 10 Oct. 1865. She married Thomas Needham, presumably around 1810 in Randolph Co., NC, but no marriage bond exists. Thomas, born 1789 in NC and died 12 Oct. 1862 in Johnson Co. IN, was the son of Thomas and Franky Needham of Randolph Co. NC. He was a farmer and a Methodist Episcopal minister. Both Thomas and Winnie are buried in the Needham cemetery near Sugar Creek Bridge in Johnson Co. IN. Letters survive which Thomas wrote from IN to his brother Lewis Needham in Randolph Co. NC. Thomas and Winnie had two sons, William Needham--1810 - 1894, and Noah Needham--1816 - 1870. Branigan's History, p. 163, on "Early Settlers" says Thomas Needham Esq. & sons William, Noah, Isaac & Henry came and settled in east part of Johnson Co. Nothing more is known of Isaac & Henry, and if they were indeed sons of Thomas, they appear to have left Johnson Co.
JOHN J. LAWRENCE - 21 Sept. 1796 - 25 June 1870. He is buried at Graham Presbyterian Church, Lovett township, Jennings Co. IN. He married 17 June 1818 in Clark Co. to Ruth Merrell/Merrill-- 6 July 1799 - 26 Sept. 1879. They had 11 children: Jesse Wilburn - 1820- ; William Henry - 1821-1897; infant; Elizabeth - 1827- , wife of John Barnes & William Ferguson; Lucy - 1828-1903, wife of Solomon Deputy; Margaret Jane - wife of Marion Gassaway; Mary Ann - 1834- ., wife of Darby McGannon Lattimore; Susanna Emily - 1837-1914, wife of Henry P. Wilkerson; Ruth Ellen - 1842-1917, wife of James Clinton Hudson; Benjamin Smith; Sarah Damsel - 1845-1938, wife of James Ezra Lewis.
MARY/POLLY LAWRENCE- born about 1800, married in Clark Co. IN 22 Dec. 1820 to Andrew Bower.

The Oscar Hutchings, on whose farm William Lawrence is buried, must be a descendant of this family.
