Eastern Cemetery, also known as Chestnut Grove, is located at the corner of Graham and Eighth Streets in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Pat Durham McRae <canopy2@aol.com> has obtained a photocopy of the burial records at the Jeffersonville Library and has spent months transcribing those entries, which we have sorted into an alphabetic list of known burials.

No records are currently available to us indicating the location of specific burials, but we wanted to share with you what we have.

Only the years of 1882-1908 from the burial records ledger book are available!

Pat provides the following introduction to this index:

"The earliest records that I was able to find came from the Jeffersonville Public Library. The DAR is responsible for obtaining the records, copying the hand written pages, and publishing them in book form.

"It has been a real task trying to give an accurate record from old hand writing, but I have transcribed these just as I believed them to be, with no corrections. I have come to realize that the people entering the information were spelling the names as they sounded, in most cases, and not the correct spelling.

"I would suggest that you go through all the records, if you are not able to find the person you are seeking. If I came across a name that I simply could not determine the spelling, or the written page was so faded as to be illegible, I entered (?) marks to replace the letters that were not clear. The records themselves are arranged in order by year of burial.  We have sorted the records alphabetically by surname.

"These records DO NOT indicate the locations of these graves!  I am sorry but I am working with just exactly what I have at hand. In the future we will try to work with some of the funeral homes, and see if we can obtain more records from them. The funeral home records may have a location as to where each one is buried."
