Advance Hustler
Boone County, Indiana
Friday, 1 June 1906, page 1
OBITUARY
Mrs. Fannie GILL, one of the oldest persons of Jefferson
township, died last Saturday night, at her home three mile
northwest of Advance, after a short illness of paralysis.
She was aged 88 years, nine months, and three days.
Fannie Gibson was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, 23 Sept
1817. She was united in marriage to George Washington GILL,
16 March 1837, and to this union seven children were born;
Mary J., Joseph G., Robert W., Lucinda A., Mildred E.,
______ and John S. All survive her except Mary J., who died
15 October 1891.
Mrs. GILL was the oldest of thirteen children of whom one
sister and three brothers survive.
Mother has gone from among us and he [sic] life’s work is
ended, but her pure example of right living and Christian
fellowship will go with us through life. May her light help
us live the pure life she lived. We sadly miss her but may
we realize that over there is a happy union with those for
whom her heart longed. With bowed heads and broken hearts we
say, "There is joy in the presence of the Father of light
from whom cometh every good and perfect gift." May the
comforting promise, “Who doeth all things well” be
ever present in this sorrow and may we all come closer to
the gracious Savior who said, “Though one were dead, yet
he live.”
The funeral was conducted at the home Monday morning at 10
o’clock by Rev. C. L. AIRHART, of Roachdale. Interment at
Jamestown.

Jamestown, [Boone County] Indiana
Friday, 1 October 1897 page 8
The sudden death of Thomas Franklin GILL occurred at his
home in Biloxi, Mississippi. Tuesday, 28 September 1897,
aged 65 years, 10 months and 13 days. His death was from
yellow fever, which is raging in parts of the southern
states.
Thomas F. GILL was born 15 November 1831 in Bath County,
Kentucky. He was the youngest child of Samuel C. and Sarah
M. GILL. His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm.
On the 18 November 1852, he was married to Sallie Ann MOOR.
Previous to his marriage he had filled the office of deputy
sheriff of Bath County, Kentucky. 1849 and 1850 in which
capacity he won the confidence of the people. During the
year 1851 he sold goods in Fleming County, Kentucky. In
January 1852, he moved to Missouri where he bought two
hundred and sixty acres of wild land and the young husband
and wife were indebted to the labor of their own hands for
this comfortable home and the __ sh[?] and beauty of the
architecture. They lived on this farm for more than ten
years and as the subject of this sketch expressed it had a
pretty tough time.
He was a justice of the peace for eight years. When the war
broke out he opposed secession. Later in the war he served
in the enrolled militia of the State for eight months,
discharging the duties of a commissary sergeant. During
these eight months his wife, "mamma" stayed at home managing
the farm, feeding the stock and gathering the wood to make
fires. After the war was over he returned home and in 1866
opened a small country store at the crossroads, five miles
north of his farm. This enterprise was a success from the
beginning. Here the town of Perry was laid off and he moved
his family there. He originated and was connected with
nearly every business in town. During the year of 1883 he
divided about one thousand acres of land among his children.
The influence and results of Thomas F. GILL'S life work is
beyond all human calculation.
He was the father of eight children, four boys and four
girls. Two boys and two girls are dead. He has several
relatives in Jamestown and Boone County.

IT WAS ACCIDENTAL
That was the verdict of the coroner's jury in the case of
John GILLASPIE, who was killed Tuesday, 21 January. The body
of John GILLASPIE, who was accidentally shot and killed
while hunting on the HARDIN farm Tuesday, was brought to
Mexico (Missouri) that evening and taken to the Lupton
undertaking establishment, where it was prepared for burial.
The corpse looked almost as natural as life. The load from
the gun took effect on the left side of the throat, cutting
the jugular vein and making a hole about two inches in size.
It passed upward but did not go through the head, as both
barrels of the gun were empty, but this is hardly
reasonable. Ed CRAIG, Mr. GILLASPIE's son in law, who was
helping Mr. GILLASPIE string the rabbits when the accident
occurred, said that the deceased had just shot a rabbit and
reloaded his gun, but he did not see him put in but one
cartridge. Mr. CRAIG said he had no idea what caused the gun
to discharge. Mr. G. held the gun under the left arm, the
barrel pointing upward, the butt resting on the ground,
while he pushed a sharp stick through the legs of the
rabbits. The second rabbit was being strung when the
accident occurred. Death followed instantly.
The funeral services were conducted from the Christian
Church of which he was a member, at 2:30 o'clock Thursday
afternoon, 23 January, by Rev. A. W. KOKENDOFFER, the the
[sic] pastor. The services were under the auspices of the
Maccabee lodge, Mexico (MO. Reporter).
The deceased was fifty years old; born in Kentucky and was
brought to Indiana by his parents when but an infant and
grew to manhood near Jamestown. Was married to Ellen
SHEPHERD about 31 years ago. He had lived in Missouri about
25 years. He was the father of eleven children, eight of
whom, with wife, are left to mourn the loss of a good and
kind husband and father. The deceased also leaves an aged
mother and four brothers-- Wm. GILLASPIE, of New Brunswick;
S. A. and Omer GILLASPIE, of Jamestown; Prof. J. W.
GILLASPIE, of Lizton-- and one sister-- Miss Nettie ASHLEY,
of New Brunswick.

JAMESTOWN PRESS

Thursday, 15 November 1900
OBITUARY
Death of Little Rettie GRAY
Death has again been in our midst and taken from the home of
Albert and Lizzie their darling babe, Rettie. Little Rettie
was born 11 October 1898, died 1 November 1900, aged 2 years
and 20 days. Rettie was sick but a few days and suffering as
she did we will not wish her back again, to suffer in this
world of pain. Life is a gift from God and is divine. Each
soul that is born is a frail vessel and must push its way to
the port of rest and peace. When we launch a ship we do not
know if it will reach its port, and so with a soul, it may
not reach its home. It may go down at sea, or the foe may
seize it and, make it his prize. Little Rettie reached the
port in safety. Suffering as she did the vessel was a unit
for the great sea of life in its severe storms. Therefore
the Master has caused it to hove to and put into the harbor
of peace. Singing birds, bright flowers and glad sunshine.
We enjoy all this and often cry out in our rapture what a
beautiful world. Father, mother, brother, sister, think of
that world of beauty and grandeur, where Rettie now lives.
Clothed with life eternal she gathers flowers of every hue
along the banks of the River of Life, hand in hand with him
who said - "Suffer little children to come unto me and
forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of Heaven."
We loved her, yes, we loved her. But angels loved her more,
and they have sweetly called her to yonder shore.

Mary McVEY was born in Highland County, Ohio, 16 September
1820. At ten years of age she came with her parents to
Putnam County, Indiana. At the age of twenty-three she was
happily married to Andrew GREGORY, who died in 1879. Eleven
children were born to them. Four died in infancy. The other
seven lived to adult life and six still survive their
parents and all of them were present to witness the last and
sad rites of their mother.
In young ladyhood she was converted and united with the M.
E. church and continued in that communion until translation.
For a number of years she had been almost entirely deprived
of sight. Thus afflicted she has not been able to mingle in
society, as under other conditions she would have continued
to do. But the hope of a vision far better grew stronger as
the shadows deepened about her. She had no fear of death and
longed for her assured rest. During her last illness, with
almost supernatural strength, she sang the following
beautiful words:
Mother, thou was mild and lovely
Gentle as the summer breeze
Pleasant as the air of evening
When it floats among the trees.
Peaceful be thy silent slumber
Peaceful is the grave so low
Thou will no more join our number
Thou so no more will know our songs.
Dearest mother, thou hast left us.
Here thy loss we deeply feel.
But 'tis God that has bereft us
He can all our sorrows heal.
Yet again we hope to meet thee
When the days of life have fled
Then in Heaven with joy to greet thee
Where no farewell tear is shed.
On Sabbath morning, 18th inst., at the hour for assembling
for church, her spirit winged its way to join the
congregation in the upper sanctuary. She had reached the
ripe old age of 85 years, 5 months and 2 days. Peaceful is
her rest with the redeemed of the Lord. XXX
The funeral services were held at the home of the deceased's
daughter, Mrs. Jas. RAINS, Wednesday at 10 o'clock conducted
by Rev. H. C. NEAL. Burial at the I.O.O.F. cemetery. The
pallbearers were all grandsons of the deceased.

OBITUARY
Russell LEANDER HOUK
Little Russell Leander HOUK, son of Andy and Pearl Houk, was
born in Jamestown, 10 March 1901 and passed away to his
heavenly home 10 August 1909. Little Russell only lived in
this world for a little over eight years but in that time
had endured himself to all who knew him, being so patient
and sweet during all the weary days of sickness. He was
never known to utter one word of complaint but always
expressed himself as wanting to live to be a man.
Baby Russell was sick from the age of 9 months and could
never play as other children but enjoyed their sports as far
as his strength would permit. He loved to hear the bible
read and attended Sunday school when able. He was especially
interested in that part of the bible telling of the glories
of Heaven, and would ask innumerable questions about the
transfer of spirit to his heavenly home.
Darling Russell, we miss you but would not [?c]all you from
that sweet home above even if it were in our power, but will
try to live a nobler and better life and join you in Heaven,
when that summons comes that we all must obey.
Russel's parents returned from New Mexico about two months
ago bringing their baby home to die, and made their home at
Orian Gossett's south of town. The parents, one little
sister, Ruth, grandfather and many other relatives are left
to morn[sic] his death.

O B I T U A R Y
Died- At his residence near Lebanon, on last Monday, the 3d
inst., George H. Johnson, Sr., in the seventy-seventh year
of his age. "Uncle George" was one of the pioneers of Boone
County, having settled near Jamestown nearly forty years
ago, when the whole of this country was an almost
interminable wilderness. He carried the chain for the
surveyors, who marked out the present dirt road between
Jamestown and Lebanon by "blazing" the trees along the way -
traversing a region which had not hitherto known the
presence of a Caucasian. At that time there was not a house
or other sign of human habitation between this place and the
southern boundary of Boone County, and one solitary log
cabin but was all that could be seen of Lebanon. The ground
where the Court House now stands was then a primeval forest
that echoed to the nocturnal din of wolves and owls. The
announcement of Mr. Johnson's death will occasion sincere
grief among a large circle of friends and relatives by whom
he was affectionately regarded.

Lenora Catherine, daughter of Isaac H. and Nancy J. Schenck,
was born October 7, 1859, on the old home place in the North
part of Hendricks County, departed this life in Pittsboro,
Indiana, July 25th at 1:30 A.M. at the age of 66 years, 9
mos and 18 days. She was united in marriage to M. L.
Johnson, August 31, 1876. To this union were born seven
daughters, Mrs. Arthur Garner, Mrs. Porter Weaver, Mrs.
Virgil Johnson and Mrs. Howard Hubble of Pittsboro, Mrs.
Mell Stonebraker of Brownsburg, Mrs. Ben Coleman of
Indianapolis and Emma May, dying in infancy. She raised one
nephew, Hugh Smith, now living in Illinois who shared the
home as a son. She united with the Baptist church at old Mt.
Tabor in the winter of 1876 afterward moving her membership
to the church at Pittsboro. She lived a devoted life to the
cause of Christianity all the many years, always attending
the church service until the last few days when her health
sometimes prevented. She leaves to mourn her sudden passing
out a devoted husband, six daughters, sixteen grandchildren,
five brothers and a host of other relatives and friends. She
was always jolly and had a pleasant smile and a kind word
for her family and friends and especially her neighbors.
During the past few years her health failed her but her kind
husband and devoted daughters were always ready to assist
her in her afflictions, were always trying to make her last
days as pleasant and easy as possible. She expressed a
desire to pass away suddenly which desire was granted and
proved she was not afraid of the great monster death, so
while we sorrow and feel that our loss is great, we sorrow
not as others having no hope, feeling assured she had gone
to meet her loved ones and her Redeemer in a land of
perpetual day. She is freed from the sorrow and struggles of
this life to which the children of men became heir by reason
of sin. She has put off the mortal garments, laid them aside
to await the resurrection morn, where she will take them up
again and join the angelic host to bask in the sunlight of
God's redeeming love evermore. So goodbye. Farewell. Till we
meet again in the Paradise of God. The funeral was held at
the late home Tuesday afternoon at 2 P.M. conducted by Rev.

Mr. Lane entered the clerk's office as deputy under Samuel
S. Brown, in September, 1841, and with the exception of
about eight years has been connected with the office as
clerk or deputy since that time. No man in the state of
Indiana has made more court record or issued a larger number
of marriage licenses than Mr. Lane. He was thoroughly
conversant with every detail of the office, and the history
of every cse of any importance which has gone through our
courts during the past fifty years. At the age of eighty he
wrote a legible hand, and a day rarely passed that he did
not drop into the office and make himself useful in some
way. He was frequently consulted by the attorneys at the bar
regarding important cases, and administrators and guardians
sought and acted upon his advice in the settlement of
estates.
On the 9th day of last July Mr. Lane's eightieth birthday
anniversary was celebrated by a very happy family reunion.
At that time he called attention to the coincidence that he
joined the M. E. church August 22, 1832, was married August
22, 1842 and celebrated his golden wedding August 22, 1892.
In politics Mr. Lane was a Republican; yet he was not an
offensive partisan. He entertained his highest respect for
the opinions of those who differed from his political views.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and for
over forty years has served as secretary of the board and
stewards. His life was one whose beauty was exemplified in
his every day walk. He was honest; he was just. No man was
ever intentionally wronged by him. In his death Lebanon
loses one of her most highly esteemed citizens; the family a
fine and indulgent husband and father.
The funeral will be conducted from the residence at 10
o'clock a. m. Friday, by Rev. H. L. Kindig. The friends are
invited.

LEVI LANE'S DEATH
SUDDEN CLOSE OF A LONG AND USEFUL LIFE
Nearly Half a Century With
the Clerk's Office - Funeral Friday
Lebanon to-day mourns the loss of one of her honored
citizens - Levi Lane. On Wednesday morning about 6 o'clock,
at his home on the corner of Washington and East streets,
his long and useful life closed, peacefully, and without
warning. On Tuesday afternoon, he was at the clerk's office
until after 5 o'clock. His last work was the preparation of
a complaint in which he was the plaintiff, and he was
detained somewhat beyond his usual hour of going home in
filing the papers and issuing subpoenas. He retired at his
usual hour, in apparent good health and spirits and rested
well during the night. Wednesday morning Mrs. Lane was
awakened by his groans. He complained of pains in his
throat, and got up and took a stimulant. The pains extended
to his lungs, and he annointed [sic] his chest with
camphor, and returned to his bed. The pains continued to
distress him and he called for another dose of the
stimulant, and fell back on his pillow and expired before
the family could be aroused. The sad news was soon
circulated on the streets, and everywhere met with
expressions of surprise and regret.
Levi Lane was born in Grainger county, Tenn., July 9, 1815,
one of a family of nine children. His father, William Lane,
was a son of James Lane, a hero of the revolutionary war. He
was reared on a farm near Knoxville, Tenn. and received a
good common school education, and taught two years of
subscription school in his native state. In 1840, the day
after the election of Wm. H. Harrison to the presidency, Mr.
Lane in company with his brother Josiah C., left on
horseback for Boone county, Indiana. The journey of 400
miles was accomplished in three weeks and they arrived here
in November. In May following Mr. Lane, with his brother
Addison and family, who had located in Putnam county in
1830, returned to the old home in Tennessee. Mr. Lane
returned to Lebanon in September, and has from that time
resided permanently in Lebanon.
On the 23rd of August 1842, Mr. Lane married Miss Pheriba
Hayes of Illinois, who survives him. Ten children have been
born unto them, two of whom are deceased. Eight are living
-- Henry S., of Chicago; Clara L. of Newkirk, Mulberry,
Empson T., Millard W., Joseph B., Mellie L. Coombs, Albert

Evageline Lewis
The Jamestown Press
Jamestown, Ind, 3 Jan 1917
Irene Evageline Lewis, beloved daughter of Cecil Floyd and
Alice Baker Lewis, was born near Pittsboro, 17 Feb 1915. At
the age of 7 months she with her parents moved to
Indianapolis, where she immediately endeared herself to
those around her.
She was a patient, loving and obedient child, always
grateful for the least kindness bestowed upon her. Even
while sick she would thank those who waited on her, until
unconsciousness stilled the little tongue. She suffered for
almost three weeks, the trouble developing into tuberculer
[sic] menengitis [sic]. All that loving hands and skilled
physicians could do was done. But such a jewel was not long
for this world, and after lingering 22 months and 4 days,
Our Heavenly Father called her Home to that land of Bliss.
Her little mission now is ended,
Her toil on earth is o'er,
May we meet her ne'er to part,
On that bright and happy shore.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Halstead at the
Christian church at Lizton, with interment at the K of P
cemetery.
