They were married 9 Oct 1879 in Benton County, IN. This was Charles' second marraige, the first being to Charlotte L HUFF who died about 1878. The children of Charles and Agnes that lived to maturity were: Lawrence GRESS b 1882 married Mattie GOLDSMITH, Isa LEMON; Blanche GRESS b 1884, m William WINDLER; Oscar GRESS b 1886, m Ida LEGRIS; Winifred GRESS b 1889, m Richard CLARK; Maude GRESS b 1891, m Clifford TINSMAN. CLARK, BIRDSALL I recently discovered a book, "History of Benton County and Historic Oxford" Jesse Setlington Birch, 1928. I think it is available from the Benton County Historical Society, 602 E. 7th Street, Fowler, IN 47944. (no phone, no e-mail). On a Books We Own, Benton County, request I discovered my gggf, Hiram CLARK, was living in Oxford in 1882 and, along with other respected townsmen, helped lay the final rails of the Indiana-Chicago RR as it came through Oxford. Also my gggm, Anna Catherine BIRDSALL, in 1852, was the first teacher in the first school in the township held in her father's house, Daniel Birdsall. Daniel Birdsall was an early pioneer in the Indiana Territory who developed a farm north of Oxford near Swanington, IN. I think these people were Quakers. I have written for the book. |

At that time, he was in possession of a rather large scroll which contained a MARTIN family history compiled from the notes of Elizabeth MARTIN, who died in 1898. This scroll was later added to by Ann FAULKNER of Knoxville, Tn. and Edna Martin OAKLAND of Ca.. The descendents of Michael MARTIN (born c.1750) many of whom were from Perryopolis, in southwest Pa are listed. Some of our other families listed were; LYNCH, KING, GUE and MCINTIRE. |

JEFFERSON, BOWMAN I've been searching for information about my great-grandparents' history (particularly his). They are Alexander JEFFERSON (b. Feb. 25, 1831 in Tyrone Co. Ireland) and Hannah BOWMAN (b. Nov. 27, 1848 in Fowler). They were married in Oxford IN and had 12 sons (2nd youngest was my grandfather Harry Jefferson b.Aug. 15, 1881 in Oxford). Both Alexander and Hannah are buried in Oxford. I've never been able to locate any Jefferson ancestors nor any information about Alexander's past. Any suggestions? |

Parents of Charles I. Rowan were: Byron Rowan and Catharine DeCamp born in Ohio. Parents of Mary Ellen Brooks (Rowan) were unknown except for last name of Brooks. Charles and Mary Ellen had four children: Claude, Ivan, Edna and Leafy Jean. Claude and Ivan moved to Ohio. Claude was a army colonel, Edna married and moved to New York State; Leafy Jean died young. MESSERSCHMIDT I am looking for any information that anyone might have on the Messerschmidt family. My great-grandfather was William Valentino Messerschmidt, d.o.b. May 31, 1874 in Hessen, Germany. When William was around eight years old (1882-3), he and his mother came to America. There was an uncle who traveled with them. They settled in Boswell, Indiana. William's mother had additional children while in Boswell. I do not think that she was married when William was born but may have married while in Indiana. I know that there are Messerschmidts still located in Indiana. William moved to New Concord, Ohio in 1905 or 1906. If anyone would have any information or links to this family, please contact me. |
