The Republic Columbus, Indiana Monday, February 15, 1904 Page 4 VETERAN OF MEXICAN WAR Jabel Smith Died of Old Age Sunday Afternoon-Two Comrades Pall Bearers. Jabel Smith died at his home on First street Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock aged seventy-nine years. He was an old line democrat and served as councilman here about ten years ago. A wife and several children survive Mr. Smith. When the Mexican war broke out Mr. Smith enlisted and was one of the few surviving veterans who lived here. John White and Joseph Kelble, two of the pall bearers, are also veterans of the Mexican war. The funeral will be held from the residence Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Elder H. H. Harmon. Burial will be in Garland Brook cemetery. The following are the pall bearers: John Stobo, Daniel Judd, Jose Newsom, James Brown, E. H. Hanser, Henry Rethwisch, John White and Joseph Kelble.
