Herman J. Smith Herman J. Smith, 66, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at his residence in Columbus. He was born Aug. 17, 1935, in Taylorsville. His parents were Herman L. and Grace (Haymaker) Smith. He married Ardus (Turpen) Smith on Nov. 5, 1954. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Gregory S. Smith of Merrimack, N.H., and Gary David Smith of Versailles; two daughters, Melani L. Smith-Weed of Franklin and Michelle M. Smith of Broome, Western Australia; a brother, Donald L. Smith of Tampa, Fla.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Esther Hayford, Thelma Tillison, Mildred Breeding and Mary Jane Smith; and two brothers, Benjamin and William Smith. He was a 1953 graduate of Columbus High School. He was employed by Cummins Engine for 40 years, retiring in 1993. He was also a member of the Cummins Diesel Workers' Union. He was a member and former fire chief of the German Township Fire Department. He was a two-term German Township trustee from 1982 to 1990. He was also an avid Cincinnati Reds fan and former president of the Bartholomew County Baseball League. The Rev. Lonny Geon will conduct a service at 11 a.m. Friday at Vernon Jewell-Nick Rittman Funeral Home in Columbus. Friends may call from 4 to 8:30 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh. Memorial contributions may be made to Just Friends or Taylorsville United Methodist Church.
