Maradean Oakes Maradean Oakes, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was a resident of Greenwood. She was born July 1, 1921, in Clay County. Her parents were Ralph and Vesta (Girton) McQueen. She married James W. Thomas on July 4, 1938. He preceded her in death July 23, 1964. She then married Edward J. Oakes on Sept. 4, 1965, in Greenfield. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Jimmie D. Thomas of Borden and Leslie L. Thomas of Indianapolis; a daughter, Peggy J. Hall of Greenwood; two sisters, Joy Lash of Brazil, Ind., and Oletta Salitros of Harmony; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Orman McQueen; and a grandchild. She was employed for 15 years by St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers in Beech Grove as an LPN in prenatal, labor and delivery areas. She then was a nurse for Dr. Charles Thomas, OB-GYN, in Indianapolis for 20 years. She was a member of Community Church of Greenwood, where she was involved in the ushering and shepherding programs. She was also past president of the Indiana Nursing Association. The Rev. Woodrow Church will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Friday at Community Church of Greenwood. Friends may call from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.
