Willis, Jesse R., Wm. B., J.Q.A., Nathan, W.T. and Malinda J. Jesse R., the subject of this sketch, being the second son, was born May 29th, 1830. His early years were spent principally in learning thoroughly how to farm and in obtaining an education. He attended the Quaker school in Sand Creek (one of the very best schools in the county) completing his education at the Indiana University at Bloomington in the year 1850. After completing his education he continued to reside at his father's home until 1858. On the 17th day of February of the same year, he was married to Mary Cox, who died June 14th, 1877. To them were born nine children, Albert G., Emma J., Mary Ida, (deceased) Nathan H., Charles Sumner, Lydia, Vida, Jesse and Joseph O., (deceased.) He has always been a prominent actor in whatever he undertook and his clear head and sound judgment have made a place for him as one of the leading minds in the county. He never united with any church, although he was a firm believer in the bible and its teachings. In his conversations he often quoted passages from the scriptures, which added much to the force of his words. He was taken seriously ill and lived but a few days. Through his short and severe sickness he never complained, but bore his sufferings patiently, not seeming to realize the end was near. He died March 16th, 1899, at the age of 68 years, none months and fifteen days.
