Ruth Dinkins Harrison, 89, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2015, under the care of Our Hospice of South Central Indiana at Four Seasons Health Center. She was the daughter of Chester N. Dinkins and Mayme Schulz Dinkins. She married William Melvin Harrison Jr., July 21, 1946. She is survived by her son, David (Barbara Roberts) Harrison of New Jersey; two grandchildren, Geoffrey Carter (Nicole) Harrison of Austin, Texas, and Angela Jo Harrison of Indianapolis; three great-granddaughters, Mackenzie, Taylor, and Morgan Harrison, all of Austin, Texas; and her brother, Paul N. (Dottie) Dinkins of Columbus. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband on March 20, 2006 and a sister, Thelma Nolting. Ruth went to work at Irwin Union Bank in 1956 as the only woman making loans in the consumer loan department. Soon, responsibility for the promotion and growth of the bank’s retail service plan were added to her duties. Moving up in the bank, she became Vice President of Marketing in 1973. She had the honor of serving as the President of the National Association of Bank Women in 1971 and was co-founder and first President of the Indiana chapter of the Bank Marketing Association. She also served on numerous committees with the Indiana Bankers Association and the American Bankers Association. In 1983 she was appointed by Governor Robert Orr to serve as the first woman Director of the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions, a position she held for six years. She was also Chairwoman of the Conference of State Banks, and was named a Sagamore of the Wabash. Ruth enjoyed singing in the choir at Asbury United Methodist Church where as a charter member she served on many boards throughout the years. She will be remembered for her pioneering role for women in banking, her dedication to her church, and her love of her family. Barkes, Weaver and Glick Funeral Homes July 11, 2015
