The Republic Columbus, Indiana Monday, July 19, 1880 Page 4 OBITUARY Mrs. Mary Matilda Essex, wife of our esteemed fellow-citizen, Lewis Essex, departed this life about noon on the 15th inst. The funeral took place at Hope this afternoon, the 16th, and was attended by a large concurse of people, who thus testified to the general respect and esteem with which Mrs. Essex was regarded in this community. The minister in his discourse, spoke of her as a faithful adn exemplary member of the church. As a benevolent and self-sacrificing neighbor, as a gently and unaffected and obliging friend, as a devoted and excellent wife and mother. Mrs. Essex was the daughter of the late Daniel Zeigler, one of the first settler of Hawcreek township, and one of the original member of the Moravian church at Hope when it was organized fifty years ago. She was born on June 12th, 1811, in what was then Rowan county, North Carolina. She was married to Mr. Lewes Essex, December 30th, 1834. Their union was blest with four sons and four daughters. After a time of failing health she was seized with partial paralysis in the Spring of the present year. The disease gradually and progressively accomplished her dissolution, and she gently fell asleep in themidst of her sorrowing family-having attained the age of 69 years, 1 month and 4 days.
