The Republic Columbus, Indiana Tuesday, April 9, 1901 Page 2 John Callahan. John Callahan was born near Lawrenceburg, Ind., March 26, 1826, and died in Indianapolis, Ind., April 5, 1901. He went to Ohio when seven years of age and in 1847 enlisted at Hamilton, Ohio, in Company H. Fourth Ohio Volunteer Inf. and served till the close of the war with Mexico. In 1851 he went to Rockcreek township, Bartholomew county, and in that year was married to Miss Jennie Burns. He moved to Columbus, Ind., in 1883 and in 1886 was elected recorder of Bartholomew county. He discharged the duties of that office to the satisfaction of all, irrespective of party or politics, and despite the fact that he was a lifelong democrat his large majority showed a goodly number of republican votes. He moved to Indianapolis in 1896. Mr. Callahan was a member of the Christian church for almost 53 years. Those surviving him are his wife, sister, five children and four grandchildren. Death resulted from apoplexy.
