The Columbus Republican Columbus, Indiana Thursday, November 2, 1876 Page 1 Obituary The Daily Journal, of Lawrence, Kansas, of October 25th, has the following in relation to the death of Charles O. Alden, who died at North Lawrence, October 23m 1876: We learn with regret of the death of Mr. Charles O. Alden, of North Lawrence, after an illness of less than three weeks. He came among us an entire stranger some 18 months ago, but by his genial spirit, quiet, unobtrusive ways, and sterling qualities of mind and heart, had won himself a host of friends. He was a great reader, and possessed a large fund of general information, which, with his rare conversational powers, made him a most agreeable companion. He came to Kansas from Petersburg, Kentucky, eight years ago, and most of his family are still residing there. One of his sons, Wm. P. Alden, of Columbus, Ind., was with him during the last week of his life. Although stricken down so unexpectedly away from his family, yet loving and kind friends ministered to him, doing all that could be done for his welfare and comfort. His end was calm and peaceful, his last words being expressive of his hope in Jesus. The deceased was an honored member of the Masonic order, and Lawrence Lodge, No. 6, and Acacia Lodge, No. 9, A. F. and A. M., took charge of the remains, and buried it in the solemn rites of the order.
