GEORGE T. DOWNING

GEORGE T. DOWNING, born 17 January 1814 in Mercer Co., KY, was the son of John Downing and Alice Lee Edwards. George Downing married Sophia Wales 16 December 1833 in Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN. She was born 23 Dec. 1816 in Maryland. Their first six children were born in Indiana before 1845, likely Wayne, Tippecanoe Co., IN. After moving to Texas, seven more children were born in Fannin Co., TX between 1846 and 1858.

Their first child, Emily Belle married William Patrick Fitzgerald; Thornton m/1 Anna Farmer and m/2 Louisa Farmer; Alice married Marion Smith; Anna married Jesse Crooms; Amanda married Amstuda Allsbrook; Elizabeth married William M. Dulaney; Hirum married Emma Lee; and Hulda married B. S. Zachary. Three or more children died young.

George Downing died 1 Nov. 1880 in Atoka Co., OK. Sophia Wales Downing died 3 Feb. 1897 in Norman, OK.
